Jordan Peterson tells the story of his father in law who cared for his ill wife for 15 years. Peterson explains what we can learn from such tragic experiences and how one can deal with such suffering and tragedy.

Jordan's frequent forays into the problem of life's suffering has had a profound impact on my life. I more fully understand that suffering is a universal experience, an inherent part of the human condition, and not just a 'problem with me'. All the little frustrations I must suffer throughout the day from dragging myself out of a warm bed in the morning to stubbing my toe, to not having some little thing go my way are being experienced the world over in one way or another. I am not alone in my sufferings, large or small - and there is comfort in that.

Suffering is inherent to the human condition of attaining enlightenment. If there was no tragedy or suffering it would not be a good world. In an ironic sense. People cannot grow strong, wise, virtous or healthy in a world of butterflies and cup cakes. A better world awaits us. But while ever we inhabit this one there is lots of pain and agony along the way...and its for our own good. The Spartans knew this truth. So do most modern militaries. God's kingdom is a cruel kingdom but a good one. For he is surely a fine craftsmen. And knows what he is doing.

HIT ME "HIT ME". This quote by Joker actor Heath Ledger from "The Dark Knight" made a huge impression on me and inspired me to create a philosophy. It has helped me to make peace with all my issues of suffering. Through practices of all kinds. I have learned to love my suffering and ultimately my life. The hits of suffering are a fact of life and the key to enlightenment. A hit from suffering affects you internally in the mental, in the psychic, or superficially in the body. All beings and all things have this powerful side to them. "HIT ME" always works. Because you are never disappointed with this expectation. Because something almost always hits you. Whether it's unwanted emotions or thoughts. And even if you don't want to be hit by something, it still hits you. So it still works as an expectation. It even works when positive things hit you. Like soft raindrops or a soap bubble. Just like joyful or happy emotions and or thoughts. Hit me always, all the way, in every way, anyway. "Anyway", because sometimes or often I don't want to be hit and it hits me anyway. Then it happens anyway. Or I say although I don't want to be hit, I still want to be hit in order to gain strength. When you commit to such an idea, you unlock the path to enlightenment. It is therefore a good reason to follow the path of loving our suffering. As it brings great benefits to oneself. From ourselves not wanting to be hit and not wanting to take the suffering into ourselves, to wanting to be hit and wanting to take the suffering into ourselves. It always works, no matter in what form we are hit. Once you have developed a certain level of this practice, you master suffering and become truly enlightened in love for suffering. And for conflict, but also for what hits us in general, I quote Bruce Lee, from the movie "Enter The Dragon": "I do not hit. It hits all by itself."

@@user-so4sv1dq4z yes, you definitely get it brother, and well said. I'll add that when I examine the peak moments in my life, occasions of most intense joy, happiness, or gratification, without exception, they can be traced back to periods of great and sometimes extreme anguish or suffering which put me on a different path and without which I would never have had the opportunity to experienc the peak moment. We are always rewarded for bearing our cross willingly. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but somewhere down the road, if we're patient, it comes and we can be grateful once again for the suffering catalyst that put us on this path. We just need to remind ourselves throughout our daily grind that this is the way the universe works. Sometimes the whining sneaks out of me before I remember. Haha. Feet of clay. I'm guessing JP alludes to the Joker/ Ledger analogy, but I don't think I ever watched that Batman movie. I'll definitley check it out! Nice to see JP's insights are still changing peoples lives for the better.🙏👊💪

I lost my pride & joy, my only son at 18 to a unlicensed dui driver 2 years ago. This man's convictions & words single handed brought me back from the from the brink. Did all I could to just kill myself & die. No purpose, joy, just a empty shell of my former self just waiting, hoping for the end & a reprieve from all this. Then I saw a jp video & started binge watching them. Slowly, very slowly (2 yrs before I genuinely laughed again) I somehow accepted it & moved on not past it but with it. I carry it the best I can everyday somedays I do OK somedays not so much but for the first time I feel optimistic about the future.

Our mother died in 2017 suddenly out of nowhere and it’s been a tough road since. Now they’re facing the reality there dad won’t be here much longer and they’ll both be parent less before turning 25. I am heartbroken for them and so scared, so I can’t even begin to imagine how they’re feeling. My mother died in July and my father basically starved her to death at the end . He literally told me to my face he doesn’t like me many times after she passed. I was the only one who tried to give my mom more time to say good bye to the family . I picked up her 65 pound body and drove her to the ER when she couldn’t talk or swallow . It was one of the most traumatizing events of my life and I relive it all the time . But I gave her 2 extra weeks ( the first ER visit )and then 2 extra more days to say good bye to her grandkids and siblings. I still cry from the loss and I still blame myself for not doing enough . But seeing her sign her own death by going into hospice and dying the first day, I realized how strong she was and that I’m just as resilient and strong as her . Thank you mom I love you ❤️!

After 3 days, the pain of hunger is gone and thirst leaves as well. I promise you she didn't suffer by not eating drinking. The cancer was so much more painful. So hopefully she was medicated. You loved her, and that's what matters most. Sometimes ending the suffering of the pained is the best thing you can do. And the person that has to carry out that task never recovers. Ever. I know.

When he gave this speech, he was similarly suffering. The fact he came back from it and is preparing to continue holds even more weight to his words. With his education, he was familiar with psychology and mental well being. Now, he's living validation that it can be done. Yet his disingenuous jealous detractors will try to shame him for a very human moment of weakness, because they couldn't come back from what he managed to. You know what's amazing? I bet Jordan Peterson would STILL believe they could, even when they choose not to.

You can tell the genuineness with which he approaches topics, and even topics which are difficult and emotionally challenging. This viewpoint sounds like Rainer Maria Rilke. Let This Darkness Be a Bell Tower Written by Rainer Maria Rilke Translated and read by Joanna Macy Listen Quiet friend who has come so far, feel how your breathing makes more space around you. Let this darkness be a bell tower and you the bell. As you ring, what batters you becomes your strength. Move back and forth into the change. What is it like, such intensity of pain? If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine. In this uncontainable night, be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses, the meaning discovered there. And if the world has ceased to hear you, say to the silent earth: I flow. To the rushing water, speak: I am. Sonnets to Orpheus II, 29

My mom claims my brother was cremated but i convince myself she is hiding that he is secretly preserved, awaiting the resurrection. I apparently can in no way handle and accept tragedy. Alongside my brother i also lost who i believe to be my soulmate, and the greatest opportunity in my life to build significant wealth that would have let my buy a home and start a better life. It wasn't just one tragedy, is was multiple things including losing my hopes and dreams. How can i accept and move on if i dont feel like there is a life for me anymore because everything that made me who i was becoming was torn away from me?

the logic just does not math out. you say nihilists turn to pointless fun and how useless that is. but then you say face suffering. to what end? how is that any less pointless? sure you can make life less shitty but you certainly can not win. it might make you feel better to take on the hell of life. but till when? till you die and lose everything. if you believe in god life probably does make sense. so being religious like jordan is completely changes the logic. for the religious there is an afterlife. which makes it pretty easy to not feel so bad. but if you dont 😂 then alls you can do is limit the suffering. which coulda been prevented by not being born lol.

The point is to go through the suffering, not to destroy yourself, but to make yourself stronger and to return to a place of love rather than deep pain. It's not about self-destruction, it's about making yourself stronger and integrating the experience of grief into your life, so you have the skills to cope with it more.

I understand that JBP had many problems in life. We should support him as a human being. But he is not always right as regarding political theory and facts

HIT ME This quote from the Joker actor Heath Ledger from "The Dark Knight" made a huge impact on me and inspired me to create a philosophy. It helped me make peace with all of that. Through practices of all kinds. I have learned to love my trauma, my illness, my feelings, my thoughts, my conflicts, my life and ultimately my suffering. The hits are a fact of life and the key to enlightenment. A hit affects you, internally or superficially. Everyone and everything has this HIT ME side in it. HIT ME always works. And you will never be disappointed with this life expectation. Because something always hits you. Even if you don't want to be hit by something, it still hits you. Hence, it still works as a life expectation. It even works when positive things hit you. Like soft raindrops or a soap bubble. Same as joy or bliss. Hit me all the way, in any way, anyway (even if sometimes or often I don't want it). If you commit yourself to such an idea, you decipher the path to enlightenment. It is therefore a good reason to follow the path of loving our suffering. Because it brings you great benefits. From ourselves, when we don't want to be hit and don't want to take in the hits, to the desire to be hit and take in the hits. It always works, regardless of the form. Once one has developed a certain level of this practice, one masters the suffering and becomes truly enlightened. And for conflicts, but also that which hits us in general, I quote Bruce Lee: "I do not hit. It hits all by itself." The Way Out Of The Abyss Only when we can accept, what we want to let go, can we let go, of what we want to accept. A peaceful mind is the cure for restlessness. And love is the cure for a broken spirit. Pain is strength in disguise waiting to be revealed. And it takes a lot of strength to cry. Because when we cry, we open ourselves to the pain we experience. When all the waves are crashing down on you, there is faith to get you through. Express your belief in reality and believe in it. This is how you get through the waves. We make mistakes because we are not perfect. And for this fact I am grateful that I make mistakes. Remember that the solution to any problem, is the problem itself. It came into existence and it won't leave you. A sacrifice for love is a sacrifice worth dying for. We don't have to undo the things we do wrong or have done wrong in life. We die for it and thus sacrifice ourselves for love. Hence, die for your negative qualities. And live for your positive qualities. That is the sacrifice and the salvation of the human spirit. The guilt we feel is the one that enslaves us. Only when we also remember our innocence are we free at the same time. There is nothing in this universe that can harm a mad person. Except to make the mad person even more insane through harm. When one is ready to take in all hits, in order to gain strength from them and at the same time is ready to pass on all the love out of compassion to others; one will be as strong as a demon and as compassionate as an angel. A demonic angel. A victory can be achieved by resolving the battles within. When you give up fighting yourself and instead start absorbing yourself; you will be invincible. When you change the powers that hold you back, into the powers that hold your back, you will be unstoppable. You are an example of what a human being is capable of. Use the hits as fuel for the ascent. Because the greatest bliss is found when you make peace with your suffering. Because suffering is the root of blissfulness. If you love your suffering, blissfulness arises. And blissfulness is the key to heaven on earth. When you conquer yourself by loving yourself, your fears, your pain and ultimately your suffering; then it will transform you and you will be reborn. In order to overcome suffering, one must become suffering oneself. Because when you are one with all, you are bound by nothing and therefore free from everything. And by becoming one with suffering, you master it. The journey to enlightenment is a process that involves a lot of suffering. But in the end, every moment of suffering will be worth it. Because choosing to suffer consciously is the springboard to enlightenment. This is how you remember your origin and you begin to embody it. Because where there is suffering, the love spark resides. And the fire is kindled where God or consciousness enters and spreads. Become Ryu, the dragon. Become suffering. Have a relationship with the suffering (HIT ME) from sadness to madness. And become the suffering yourself, (HIT ME) and the hits. And Ryu, the dragon spreads its wings and rises with the darkening and the enlightenment. So the dragon finds the way out of the abyss.
