Jordan Peterson: Instagram hyper-users are 'psychopathic and narcissistic'

Clinical psychologist and public intellectual Dr Jordan Peterson says social media “enables female anti-social” behaviour.
"Female hyper users of Instagram are also sadistic, Machiavellian, psychopathic, and narcissistic, and they optimise for short-term mating strategy, so they’re promiscuous,” he told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
“Anti-social people, broadly speaking, have more sexual partners, they start engaging in sex earlier, they’re more callus in their utilisation of themselves than others."

A friend of mine has over 4 million instagram followers. We caught up for a drink/dinner a few months back, first time in around a year. Totally different person, and quite bizarre actually. Turned up already wasted, blamed it on social anxiety, then proceeded to humble-brag about brands and things I could not care less about. People change of course but this person, who portrayed a glam life online, was an absolute social and emotional wreck. My perception was that their online persona had eaten into their real life personality, until there was nothing left. It really was like talking to a bot in human form.

You're describing a worrying percentage of young people. I got rid of most social media, I now only have KZbin, I haven't had Facebook in over 4 Years, never had Instagram or any of the other ones. Once you escape it it's far easier to see the impact on everyone around you. Most people are fucking absent these days, they are in the room but glued to their phone, just scrolling through the same old shit etc. It's actually really sad.

That's eerie. And a shame. I had a longtime friend who seemed to undergo a similar, though less detrimental, personality/mood change shortly after joining a sorority. (I have plenty of other friends who went that route and no odd changes; I don't know why it happened with her.) It was like a sweet, funny kitten with a tiny bit of attitude went in; and a materialistic, highly judgmental, "shwasted" flirt of a diva-bot came out. The newfound superiority was the most shocking part not only because her true personality was so sweet, but also because the changes happened within a social echo-chamber and were actually rather cringe from the outside... I'm mentioning this because later, a couple years after college, I got an invite from a mutual friend to have dinner the three of us. I agreed because she was such an old friend, otherwise it was odd because none of her old friends had heard from her in years, she'd even ghosted her childhood best friend on her wedding RSVP. But she had turned back into her former self again, seriously like Jekyll had slipped back into Hyde's place and Hyde was gone without a single trace. I kept wondering, uhhh are we going to talk about Hyde though, or just pretend a magician or some sh*t was interfering with our friendship the last few years? To this day it's one of the weirdest feeling social interactions I've had--we never spoke a word about her personality changes and "disappearance" but I know her well enough to be sure that it was on her mind too. I'm glad I just savored that night having her "back", because she died unexpectedly 4 months later at 26 and it was the last time any of us childhood friends saw her. So just know, there might be a chance of them coming back to you in human form, depending on how their situation pans out...I suppose in my friend's case, she had somehow landed back in reality after graduating and moving away to start her a fancy job with a new social group. If it's a very close friendship, that might be worth keeping in mind!

I've had enough bad experiences on social media to know how bad this is for my mental health. And that I have to admit that it brings out the worst in myself as well. Probably edging on being narcissistic at times, and I'd think back to what I said on a group chat or Twitter and feel ashamed because I would never say things like that face to face with people. Recently I had to leave a private online group because I got really emotional about something, I got upset at others in group, I felt like I was being bullied, and I lashed out at them. Some of them were being antagonistic but I can't excuse that for how I acted. And again I just simply don't act like that in real life relationships. There's something unhealthy about social media and it can creep up on you. Well I left that online group which is what I spent most of my social media time on.

Today these parents dont seem to bestow the same values, Innocence and protection on their children like they had growing up. I have a young child, he is allowed 45 minutes of tv/iPad time a day. We push him to do to at least one hobby a week 2 times a week and we are always busy as a family on weekend. I will afford him the same childhood I had. Innocent to a degree and with a healthy young mind. Lazy parenting is everywhere. You see teenage girls wearing next to nothing. Sexualising themselves under 16. The parents don't seem to care. Im not much of a social media user but I do have an instagram. I got an account to follow a KZbinr about 8 months ago and I’ve posted a total of 9 times. I found myself becoming so infatuated with this content creator that it was unhealthy. I compared my life to everything she posted. Every post was her buying something new. At one point, she’d been sponsored by 3 different vacuum companies. I stopped following her about 7 weeks ago on insta. I am much happier and do not miss her content. Social media is nothing but a contest to outdo others. I feel for people who put their entire lives for the world to see just it make a buck. If FB, insta, Twitter, etc shut its doors tomorrow, millions of people wouldn’t know what to do with their lives. your sole way of income is posting pictures and videos based on sponsor specifications isn’t a reliable job. Maybe great for the short term but it’s not a career. Many of these content creators do not have a backup plan and I’m willing to bet their savings isn’t nearly as lavish as their closet filled with Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

I see the problem that online there are alot of fights and in those fights people fight dirty. When you make the mistake (or don't realize it) to engage into such a fight(s), it's easy to become bitter or even toxic. Keep in mind that emotions are energy. Provoking or a heated debate leaves negative emotions in persons. Many people have no way to get rid of this negative energy and don't notice how they become toxic. I've been guilty of that myself and see it alot online. The problem with that then is that is has influence on your whole life because you get pissed constantly and that causes social isolation in the long run. Life can become hell when you spend too much time online and keep engaging/colliding with people. After years of almost daily online activity I have learned alot about many things that will help me in the future but also destroyed my whole social life. I also see problems with people who can't deal with the amount of info I was able to collect about certain topics, which makes it hard to talk to alot of people who watch news as info source. We are now still at the start of the online world and things need to evolve into more protected platforms (for scientifical discourse at least..). Always keep in mind that negative energy spreads exponentially, so find ways to vent in a way that benefits you like sport fir example to transform the energy into something good instead of spreading it

'I also see problems with people who can't deal with the amount of info I was able to collect about certain topics, which makes it hard to talk to alot of people who watch news as info source.' The ability to retain information, lots of information, and make some sense out of it is a rare phenomenon. Those that have the ability, such as you suggest you are able to, rarely have the courage, or enough motivation, to voice it. Until about 5 years ago, I consistently made the mistake (being a boomer from a time when learning was an end in itself) that media such as this was a place to expand knowledge. It absolutely is not. It is a platform to confirm bias. The internet has merely allowed media outlets to focus attention on symptoms for the wealth that generates, this interview being one of them, good as it is. The causes, which if you collect information as you claim, you'll be thoroughly familiar with, are deflected from by a wall of buzzwords; extremist, conspiracy, right-wing etc. The reasons being that they ( the causes) contain some of the most toxic elements in society, whilst simultaneously being the most protected. Certainly, many extremist and conspiracies exist, no doubt. Genuine enquiry would explode the myths in seconds. Instead, legislation ensures a constant pressure cooker of symptoms for the outraged to gorge themselves on. The outraged, never thinking, or not knowing how, to turn off the energy that feeds it. I know how it works, but I have no idea how to convey a thesis of information into a soundbite that would motivate. Neither have any of our voices such as Peterson or Murray. They certainly know more than they let on. You are absolutely correct in your assessment. Use the energy to get fit. Watch content sparingly, comment even less. Make your own life better and those around you will benefit. It's the best anyone can do.

One of the easiest things to do with the virtualization you speak of is the use of bots to artificially create discourse that unnaturally represents public opinion. These are a much bigger problem than spam for products or scams. You can obviously spam likes and dislikes to influence what is displayed. But you can also misrepresent one or more sides of an argument and create an artificial discourse and narrative that preemptively shuts down organic conversation. Given some basic tools and organizational skills, I could control 20 accounts with unique writing, originating IP addresses, etc. that would be impossible to detect as bots, because they wouldn't be bots. This can be enough to get a fake conversation to either go viral or drown-out real discourse and eventually effect public opinion over time. Happens all the time. In fact, Twitter was probably running their own bots internally rather than baking their "censorship levers of control" into their main algorithms. This is, at least, how I'd do it. Then I get the effects of censorship while appearing on the surface to have an impartial algorithm. My bots hosted at a separate organization but designed with internal secrets to circumvent the automated bot filters. Now combine this with AI and compliment it with existing organic discourse to decide where to target things and by how much, with feedback to evolve the AI, and you've got a disinformation machine only Satan himself could create and only Jesus Christ can defeat.

People are attracted to the 'charismatic.' And normally in society those who aren't the natural alphas have a reasonable shot at weeding psychopaths out on their own and that's usually compensated by more 'well behaved' alphas assisting the more timid in that process of 'weeding out.' The problem with the internet is it's very difficult to weed out the psychopaths because once we attach a superiority complex to them due to their charisma and charm it's very difficult to 'undo' that part of the idolatry equation. We've already attached a sense of idolatry to them (that usually mostly goes away after childhood btw but now it's revitalized into adulthood) and we're trying to protect that at all costs because we see them as the leader of our own pack that we identify with. In the age of the internet we now have fully grown adults involved in the idolatry of psychopaths because of the rise of social media. Its not a good place to be in. And if these psychopaths are put in place by an authoritarian force then we end up in a really fateful situation.
