I live in NY and worked in NYC for decades, taking the subway daily. Over those years I broke up fights, got involved trying to help people or de-escalating violent situations and had weapons pulled more than once (never a gun thank goodness). These days, aside from the fact I am old and out of shape, I don't think I would ever get involved. Criminals are treated like victims and Samaritans are treated like criminals, meanwhile victims are ignored. I would be too afraid these days I'd end up in cuffs. I won't even visit NYC any more and honestly that is really upsetting to me.

I am so grateful that we have Jordan Peterson's presence, voice, and intellect as an ever-reliable source of, and for, truth, reason, and sanity. This man's mind blows me away. When I first discovered him, I suppose about eight years ago now, I never imagined how much I would, most gratefully, rely upon his brilliant, philosophical, and endlessly thought-provoking perspectives. Whether it was portions from interviews (as both interviewer, but principally, as the interviewee), media appearances, public talks and discussions, or segments of his great many classroom lectures, I have, learned so much about the human mind, relationships, family, human development, psychology, sexuality, society, culture, faith/religion, history, politics, government, tyranny, freedom, inequality, Marxism, addiction, human suffering, et al. I mean, in other words, pretty much about EVERYTHING. I understand this world we live in a hell of a lot better thanks to this man, who I would say is, quite handily, not just the West's, but the ENTIRE world's, foremost and greatest intellectual and thought-leader. He is absolutely, positively--and most incomparably--brilliant, and I am truly grateful for his contributions to, as I like to call it, "The 21st Century Conversation".

Common sense is refreshing, isn't it... A question would be how to bring common sense to a city like New York, or San Francisco, or Chicago.

A big reason for over charging good Samaritans is for the mistaken appearance of preventing people from taking matters into their own hands and vigilantism. How are the guardian angels treated by the DA and the donut squad when they do something good in NYC ? Up here in the center of the universe , it is about the police being threatened if someone does their job. So they will react by charging and persecuting the offender/hero. I get the impression that depending on where you are , the police are not about stopping crime but are in the business of processing crime as there are many more financial awards at stake.

He just said that Vigilantism is not the way to go. Why not? If the police and justice, court system that we pay for, our EMPLOYEES, can't/wont do the job to keep us safe, why can't we do the job ourselves and fire those incompetents? And NOT pay their salaries, and retirements and health expenses for the rest of their lives for not doing the job they were hired to do?

Whenever I'm out in public and see someone in trouble nearby, I always turn and walk AWAY from it. I'm an older straight white male and an ex-Marine; in the event that I get involved and anything goes wrong, I'll automatically be seen as the bad guy by much of the country. So I keep my head down, mind my own business, and vacate the area if any trouble arises. Better safe than sorry. It is what it is.

Ok that's some people and they have a choice. To a real hero, there is no choice, they are naturally going to help when they know it's right, regardless.

@@cb1623 Jordan Peterson (and you, apparently) argue that there is no "Daniel Penny effect" as a result of the prosecution of good samaritans. But I think you're being overly sentimental when you say that "To a real hero, there is no choice, they are naturally going to help when they know it's right, regardless." It sounds nice, but I don't think it's true in real life. People are rational actors. If events repeatedly show us that our actions are going to result in blame and retribution for us, then eventually we won't act. Example: It's known and provable that criminals are deterred by harsh legal penalties; why not heroes too? Heroes aren't idiots, and real life isn't a superhero movie. Guys are supposed to risk getting stabbed or shot in an altercation with a criminal, AND THEN ALSO risk getting hauled off to jail because they are the wrong skin color vis-a-vis the criminal? If the world consistently punishes heroic actions based on race or other considerations, even heroes will eventually learn to keep their heads down and mind their own business. (Just my own opinion, of course.)

Too many times people are percecuted for defending theirselves the only way they can or for standing up for others that are being bullied & attacked. The SUPREME AUTHORITY ALMIGHTY POWERFUL GOD KNOWS THE TRUTH & THAT IS WHAT ULTIMATELY MATTERS. EVERY KNEE WILL BOW BEFORE HIM ON JUDGEMENT DAY.

Sorry Mr Peterson this one time where you are wrong. I am one of the many who will not travel or set foot in deep blue states like New York or California. It is because it is not safe from their tyrannical government who is more dangerous than the criminals they leave on the streets. People are terrified to do the right thing in those and other deep blue states as they will get in more trouble defending themselves and others than the actual criminals. You should really be more of an expert on this as you spent more time in Canada than I did I left when I was 20 that was 35 years ago and Canadians have never had the right of self protection and Canadians don’t protect others for fear of being arrested.

@ that people will not change their behavior for fear of being arrested. The Daniel Penny affect. He is wrong on that. That is already been proven. People have stopped stepping in to help because you get in more trouble helping in deep blue states than the criminals who are committing the actual crimes.

There was a cartoon depicting a homeowner catching a burglar. The crook says : "If that gun isn't registered, you're in more trouble than I am." (True in blue states).
