I used to 3 putts. My friends even nicknamed me "3 putts Ted". After seeing this video, I went out and bought a 15' * 18' putting mat for $150. I did 200 putts per day for 5 days. I no longer have the nickname "3 putts Ted". Thank you Pete, you have helped my game a lot. Not just putting but all around game because of you video.

i was lucky enough to meet Jackie Burke Jr. the oldest living masters champion and Ben Hogans best buddy. He told me a story about how Phil Mickelson called him at his club he runs in Houston and asked if he could fly over there to get a putting lesson from Mr. Burke. who is one hell of a putter. Mr. Burke told him dont waste my time. he said do that clock drill from 3 feet away and dont stop until you make 100 out of 100. if you mess up up you have to start back at 1. once you can do it give me a call back and we can set up our meeting. Mr. Burke told me it took Phil 3 days before he heard from him. When he called Mr. Burke told him to save his money on his flight and not to bother coming as that was the lesson all along. he said keep working on the short putts and it will make your long putts easier. On longer putts try to get the ball into that imaginary 3 foot circle. if you practiced enough from 3 feet you should have no worries. Phil laughed at Mr. Burke on the phone and they said there goodbyes. later that year Phil won the masters and Mr Burke sent him a congratulations card with one simple message inside the card. it said "Your Welcome".

What makes Speith's stats even more outstanding is that not only did he do it in a competitive tournament on the PGA Tour, he did it all over the world in many different countries, many different climates on many different styles of course. It didn't matter whether he is putting at Augusta, St Andrews or Chambers Bay... Great video Pete! Definitely going to try this out one day.

Probably my favourite ever golf video. Thank you. To me this really illustrates the differences between a Tour Pro and an amateur as the concentration levels and ability to be this mentally strong for that long are not really something that just happens by chance it is something that has to be worked on in the same way as a golf swing. I have always said there are 2 parts to a great golfer the swing and mental capability and I genuinely think you can teach most people to have a repetitive decent swing but very few people will have the mental ability to excel as a tour pro. The fact that Spieth goes through something like this has no doubt helped his mental toughness and gave him the edge over Rory et-al especially in those crunch moments
@peterfinchgolf9 жыл бұрын
+Darren Hardy cheers Darren, remember that mental toughness and concentration is not something tour pro's are born with, just like they are not born with a great putting stroke. Both need to be PRACTICED. If people want to become mentally stronger then they can
@paulahulme9 жыл бұрын
That's brutal. For Speith's tour stats I would suggest there was also more break on the putts than a practice green.

It’s apples to oranges. Considering tour stats are based on in tournament stats not practice or assessment type scenarios. Things Pete didn’t have to worry about; different greens, on different courses, in all conditions, without a confirmed read on the break, tournament pressure, different speeds, morning, afternoon, grain..... etc. Makes Spieth’s and other great putters that much more impressive. That being said, good work Pete and impressive performance also. Like you identified it’s a bit silly to try out of the blue for us mortals, endurance and concentration are tested more than actual putting skills.

I think its a great idea over the course of a month for most people. Focus on 100 at a time in 10 x 10 sets from various distances. Luckily I have a 12 x 2 ft putting "strip" that I can use year round, so I can do 100 a day after I'm home from work. I think I'll use this technique on anything inside 15 ft this winter and come spring, I hope the results pay off. Great video!

I would bet a tour pro's stats in a practice situation are very good, higher than in competition. In practice, they know the read after a couple putts. In competition, there is always a slight bit of doubt in the read / speed / etc. Good vid. Enjoyed it. If anything, it gives you an idea of the dedication required.

Most intelligent video so far Pete. I do similar when completeing the Pelz putting test - I'm doing one today and if combined with the short game can mean 5 1/2 hours on the green which can make your back sore. The benefit from this intensity of practice will be mostly mental you will feel so much better over those 6 ft putts. You might want to include othe types of putts in your session eg large breaking putts and long lag putts which would increase the variety and improve your touch at the same time.

Great experiment. Yes, please continue to do such things so WE don't have to test them ;-) When I do those "around the world" putting drills I use less balls, less distances and do it for 20-45 min max. Gotta' give you props for sticking to the full 1,000! I too think I would have gotten rather numb after that many. I also think that too many at once likely isn't beneficial. Heck, it may even be detrimental if you lose confidence from missed putts due to loss of concentration. I think it's like with anything skill-based: You gotta find what works for you. Jordan for instance, assuming he really does that many putts, likely found that worked for him in doing that many putts. Maybe for consistency, maybe for concentration, maybe both. Who knows. But there are a lot of other good putters out there and they surely don't all do the same things as Jordan does in their practice routines.
@peterfinchgolf9 жыл бұрын

@jasons57269 жыл бұрын
How do you think this will effect your putting when you play faster/slower greens? I would worry about creating muscle memory for that green's speed, and then having a disastrous time adjusting when playing different green speeds. Are you working more on alignment and technique, or are you focusing solely on making putts (looks like you're only focused on putts made -- which I guess requires alignment and technique practice -- so maybe it's a redundant question)? Great video! Thanks for all the great stuff you keep putting out for us to enjoy!!

Mentally gruelling work-out for a positive putting gain. In choosing a new putter would something like this routine be beneficial to see if you and the putter are properly suited? Is there a better way (less punishing) that one could usein order to select a putter, and does the putting motion and grip selection (normal,claw,reverse) have a more serious bearing on the selection process?

Hi Peter, I am fairly new to golf and noticed at my club recently an old timer using the side saddle putting method. He putts so well i think he could give Jordan Spieth a run for his money! He does not anchor or straddle the putting line but i did notice that his putter shaft is quite vertical at address and through the stroke, i am wondering if this method is legal even though his putter does have the required 10 degrees angle between putter head and shaft. Any chance you could do a segment on this method and perhaps clear up the rules regarding this method of face on putting which i'm surprised more people are not going to. I'm considering the method but i want to be 100% certain i'm not breaking the rules because i'm sure people will challenge my method and knowing the rules etc will be key. Thanks in advance if you get time to do a video regarding this, i'll settle for your expert opinion though at the very least :) Apparently Dave Pelz is a big fan of this method. Really enjoy your videos Peter, and next time your in Australia (Brisbane) we should have a hit :)Oh and i just heard Bryson Dechambo is going to use this method when he gets his tour card!!! So maybe it will catch on, he has said he believes it's the best method mathematically out there! Anyways i cant think of anyone better for getting the low down on this method than yourself and explaining it to us hackers, cheers Jeff....

Hey Pete, been watching your vidoes for a while now... GREAT stuff! And this one is excellent putting motivation - which many of us really need ;) Do you know of any database/site where you can find putting statistics for different hcp groups? Like avg procentages for hcp 0, 5, 10, 15, etc, at the difference distances? Another thing, what do you think Speiths procentages are when actually doing this routine? For me, there is a huge difference between doing 100 puts on the same green, to the same hole and in a row, and then putting when actually playing the course. I mean, the procentages would take a huge jump I think.

So I put myself under pressure to only put 36 times in practice sessions and try to better my personal best each time. Is that something you would try yourself Pete?

Here's an idea, if you don't mind me saying, try this get yourself a bucket of balls hit your first shot with a driver then next with an iron or wedge then go to the putting green hit 2 or three puts at different distances then return back to the range with your bucket of balls and repeat that cycle 18 times over but re hit any bad shots or putts until you get that shot or putt right. do that twice a week. I think this would be more practical instead of repeating the same thing over and over again. Yeah, thing I'll be doing this next spring.

+Jon Don not sure that's too practical Jon, not many ranges and putting greens next to each other, understand where you are coming from though

Best putter in the world may be a little bit of a stretch. He's the best on tour, but putting is something other people can do just as well. To be fair, I only actually know one person who can putt as well as him, but I know plenty who are better than many guys who are on tour. Sidenote: I love that grinding feeling. Played 4 rounds today (first time doing more than 54 holes)
@peterfinchgolf9 жыл бұрын
+Dtyler171 he's certainly the best putter I've seen on tour anyway, there will always be someone better somewhere

Is this a daily routine for Spieth or does he do this like every other day or what? I suppose he would only be doing this on days that he isn't playing either a practice round or competitive round, but regardless that is A LOT of putting.

I would never be able to do that haha, my posture isnt great so i have trouble with my lower back, been working on strengthening my core and back muscles lately but watching this made my back sore :P

WOW Pete I think you're right 1, 000 might be too much. I have to work my way up to 200. If I tryed to do 200 in one day my knees and back would mutiny and head back to the car long before I was done. As far as the practice is concerned it depends on what you want to do if you want to shoot low 70, s or 60 s and put in the practice and deal with it.

+runner4eg1 tis true, there's no escape in the correlation between practice, hard work and success

Okay, I finally got to try this. Damned hard. After 500-600 my lower back felt like it was going to explode! It was really distracting. The last 200 or so I was basically just trying to get through it. Took me right about 6 hours! I wonder if Jordan has somebody continually setting and resetting up his putts for him. Otherwise it just takes forever. In my opinion, it would be far more beneficial to do 400 or so first thing in the AM, then like 300 more like right after lunch. Then get the last 300 right before the light fades. I don't know, maybe that's just me. What do you think?
@peterfinchgolf8 жыл бұрын
+Chet LovesMer well it seems to work for Jordan but for the average golfer I think 500 is more than enough for one putting session

Do you personally see any benefit at all to a forward press prior to the putting stroke?

Did you use any kind of app for keeping your stats or is it just a gut feeling that between 60-90 you wre missing more putts? If you used an app, I would love to know which one it is :)
@Andyyy1978B8 жыл бұрын
+Wolfgang Montag It looks like he was taking 10 putts, then recording the results on a notepad. He'd be able to see quite easily that putts 1-10 he scored 100%, 51-60 70%, 61-70 65% etc etc.
