Worked on my 2010 Dodge grand caravan. My am/fm and the cd player were not working for years, all I could do was play pandora from my cell phone thru the audio plug in port of the radio and then that finally went a few months ago. I did exactly what you did, step for step (had my phone playing video while I did it) and it worked like a charm! Thanks for passing along the info, from a fellow DIY'er.... *I did not have a small hot air gun BUT I do have a high heat gun (about the size of a blow dryer for your hair). I used aluminum foil rolled up like a cone and put on end of my heat gun so I could pin point the heat. It works great, hope it helps somebody else... thanks again

I ended up cutting a 1/4" square of wood, and jammed it between the chip and the metal support just above it. Just that extra pressure keeps the connection, and the radio works. We'll see how long it lasts, though
@bonilla12218 ай бұрын
Did you wedge the wood between the black chip and the metal piece above it on the wall of the radio? I’m looking to do the same. Were the dimensions 1/4x1/4x 3/4 or something similar?
@jpmacoo8 ай бұрын
@@bonilla1221 Yes, that's what I did. I read on another YT post where someone else put a plastic pen cap in there, and that worked for them. I figured that the wood wouldn't bend, and might last longer. It's been almost a year, so I can't remember the exact dimensions. Just try whatever fits, as long as it puts pressure on the chip, and keeps the connection. And, yes, it's still working

Thanks for the tip and the clear video! Mine didn't loose sound but stations would drift in/out, no lock on, just got noise on AM (no signal found), etc. Figured it was the same chip. One tip.... Be careful how much air flow is going out your hot air gun! I accidentally below 3 0402's off their pads (oh oh!). Fortunately your video quality was so good I was able to match the 3 parts up and soldered back in place. Works like a champ now!

This worked for me, I made a little heat shield out of tin foil to protect the other nearby components and only expose the pins of the chip. Found a cheap hot air station on Amazon and set it to about 450 degf for about 8-10 seconds on each side while holding pressure. Working great now, thanks!

THANK YOU! 🥳 I just finished and it WORKED!!!!! I took a hot air gun on high and blasted the chip for a good 30s. Took it to the van hooked it up again. Didn't work! BUT it would work if I pressed down on the chip while still connected. So I took it out, blasted it again, pressed down on the chip with a screwdriver for a good 2-3 mins to cool. Then I cut a wood skewer to length and wedged it so it was like a tent pole on top of the chip to under the CD bracket and VOILA!! Works fine! BACKSTORY: Was not working properly for well over a year! 2012 Dodge Caravan. Radio reception would get lost then it finally cut out with 0 volume. Only AUX or CD worked 'off and on' for a few seconds at a time. I wish you the best my man! I really do thank you! And Bless all the helpful people in the youtube community ❤

Just fixed the wife’s radio thanks for posting. I’d bought her a new Android style replacement and she didn’t like it. This is a great video. Instead of using the hot air device in the video, I used my Weller P2K portable butane soldering iron. It also includes two hollow tips...a short one (approx 3/8") and a long one (approx 3/4"). Do NOT use the short one as it's a torch. The long one can be used on heatshrink and worked well for this repair...try melting some solder first to get used to it...it's a great device if you're thing about purchasing something to perform this repair.

Great video. Mine's doing the same and I'll get around to trying this...thanks much!!! The board is conformal coated and protects largely against moisture...but it also holds in some heat generated by the components. Note that "heating up" and "cooling down" cycles deteriorate solder connections over time. I imagine this IC gets hot when in use which may be why it's uncoated. If you coat this IC in the future, it may get hotter than expected and may fail permanently. A better idea, since there appears to be plenty of room, is to purchase a heat sink for that style of IC package and attach it to the top using something like Arctic Silver (thermal adhesive)...and actually, any heat sink that will fit in the area would help to some degree...
@JordanU4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I hope it works for you. There is a fan inside this piece, though from the looks of it, I don't think it runs very often, if ever at all. I'd be much more apt to modify that fan such that it runs continuously whenever the unit is powered on.

@@_zhawkeye_9808 hey, sorry for replying to such an old comment, but I just did the repair in this video and I was wondering if you ever got around to working on the fan? If so, would you be willing to share some tips on that?
@_zhawkeye_9808 Жыл бұрын
@@crypticgamma6308 ...hey Cryptic...well, no I didn't do it...I was anxious about getting the Jeep back together, so I put it off. I seem to remember there being room around the front left side (?) where there's already vent holes (this was quite a while back, so I may be wrong)... I seem to remember vent holes at the rear right side too, so a fan sucking in air at the front left would blow across the IC in question and out the right rear. Finding a switched 12 volt connection point inside the radio is the issue...I didn't take time to track down a good place for this connection...the 12 volt input into the radio is likely not switched, and present all the time so that the radio can retain the programmed stations...and, it could be that a switched 12V connection isn't available...it's likely connected to a 5V regulator to run the radio and retain memory. I'd prefer a 12V fan over a 5V fan as it would draw less current, and a 5V fan added to the 5V regulator will put more stress on the regulator... Wish I could've helped more on this... Matt

People should know that this is not a through hole chip, it just lies on the board, if you are not careful you can move the chip right off of its spot which is what happened to me. As did a bunch of smaller resistors, so only put heat on for a very short time and push straight down. Thank you. I don’t know if this would help re sealing, but you can get liquid electrical tape. We have the same problem in our 2016 Dodge Caravan. The dealer wanted a fortune to fix the no audio problem. We took it to two local repair shops, and they both said this is a very common problem. It bothers me Dodge has been knowingly using these defective stereos. IMO, this should be a recall item. Dodge shouldn’t be able to get away with selling vehicles with defective stereos. I’d love to find out how many vehicles have this problem, so everyone could make a complaint to the BBB. I’d also like to add, Dodge vehicles ( some of them from 2013 - present) with aluminum hoods, are corroding. It shows up as paint bubbles around the edges of the hood. Dodge TSB # 31-002-20 explains the reason for the problem, instructions for investigating and repair. Once I became aware of the problem, I look at vans in parking lots, etc., and I’ve seen hundreds of them. They should be forced to issue a recall. We’ve had three Dodge Caravans in a row. We loved them, and still would if they weren’t having so many problems.

Apparently this is a common issue with this specific model of radio. I work at a Jeep dealer, and we see these radios fail from time to time for this specific issue.

Tell the management the cost of a replacement unit is absolutely absurd!

Good to know. So, maybe I should just replace the factory radio. I’m truly over it. You would think the Jeep manufacturers would take note, and CHANGE the brand. Oh wait... y’all make money off of replacing it. Nevermind.🤦🏾♀️

Had my unit replaced under warranty and the replacement radio has the same exact problem. Thanks for the fix Jordan.
@jeepguy954 жыл бұрын
@@bearsrule8263 I don't get why they built these radios so poorly. I know FCA (Jeep's parent company) didn't build the radios, but outsourced production (they used to make their own radios up until the mid-2000s at their Huntsville Electronics Plant in Alabama, but closed that plant) to another manufacturer. I would hope they would've switched manufacturers, because it is a recurring issue. The touchscreen radios never had this problem, but they're incapable of outputting decent-quality sound, even with one of the "Premium" systems (like Alpine, Boston Acoustics, or Infinity).

Hi Jordan, Thank you for your video. I have used your instructions to fix the radio, but it worked only for a while. I had to reflow the solder again and again. I even used a special hardening silicone to glue the chip to the board but still is not a permanent fix. The radio will work sometimes but not always. Do you have any suggestions to make it a permanent fix? Maybe a spring that will push it down?

Your awesome. Did it, except I used a regular heat gun on high for 4/5 seconds and it works now. Probably get a BJ out of the deal. 👍

Thank you for this video! It helped me to fix my Chrysler stereo. However, I can no longer adjust the volume after this action. Would you happen to know what can be a problem? Neither the buttons on the steering wheel nor the volume control changes the noise level. Maybe I hit some other chip or connection? Thanks for the answer!
