The lament (“regret”) on the viola da gamba focuses on works by Sainte-Colombe “father” and “son”. The former, who made significant innovations to the instrument, developed very free forms in his music, while the latter, who led an eventful life, emphasizes ornamental aspects in his melodies. This section of the concert concludes with the “Burrée II” from Bach’s Suite No. 4 BWV 1010, which explores the instrument’s lower register.
