I am DEFINITELY feeling the same way! Maybe there is an "unspoken rule" about batting stance and team fun that speaks to the winning combinations that have spoken about winning the world series teams.

Anyone who follows the birds knows that he’s made massive strides. Dude was lost with 2 strikes in the past. Pitchers easily yanked the string and sped up the bat. Now he protects so much better and has no issues seeing through the ball for those oppo hits. Complete discipline overhaul

Exactly. A 110 WRC+, and he's basically a budget Francisco Lindor. What he's doing now? It's like if Bo Bichette had prime Andrelton Simmons defense. Is it sustainable? Eh, probably not to the highs he's currently reaching. There's not a hitter playing today that I'd trust to keep hitting .370. However, even if his bat drops off from his current hot streak, he still projects to be a top 5 shortstop offensively, and potentially the best shortstop defensively.

I'm an Os fan and I've been hyping him since I first saw him. Creepy Os fans who obviously think he's worthless because they play fantasy baseball wanted to GET RID OF HIM. I love that he turned his bat around at least for now. He's such a great athlete. On the base paths he reminds me a little of Rajai Davis who I congratulated in a bar one afternoon after a game because I knew he was going to the majors. He probably was wondering who I was because he didn't get a call up long after that. Even if Mateo is hitting Belanger numbers, he's the guy I want at SS.
@levymoyer8391

I don’t know how “creepy” it is to expect offense from S.S. Especially when Urias, Odor and often Mountcastle were offensive black holes last year. You can carry a Belanger if he’s the only infielder not putting up numbers.

@@levymoyer8391 So you are going to put down Mateo because other players are failing at their job?
@levymoyer8391
@levymoyer8391 Жыл бұрын
@@thebookdoc.writing.and.editing who’s “putting him down?” I love the guy and I’m glad he’s bringing such an important dimension to the offense right now. He’s won them games this year with his baserunning alone. He really seems to have figured something out at the plate, but he needs to prove it for the rest of the season before they start changing their plans with prospects over it. My point was that you can’t have no offense from three infield positions and expect to have sustained success. At the moment Mountcastle is the weakest link there by far. Unfortunately there isn’t a 1st basemen ready in the system so they have no choice but to keep running him out there. I would absolutely trade him before Mateo. I hope they find a way to keep the best players, of course, but it really seems like they need a viable contingency plan for Mountcastle and they’ll have to do that through trade. The trading position of greatest strength for them at the moment is shortstop. Jackson Holliday is the starter there within two years no matter what you, I or anyone else thinks about it. Of course the great thing about shortstops is they can usually play most positions. So maybe that’s how Mateo stays on the team. We know he can play 3rd and I assume he can play 2nd. We just have to hope Elias knows what he’s doing. So far his trades have been pretty good. It’ll be interesting.

@@levymoyer8391 All preseason, all I was hearing was "get rid of him, not enough offense." obviously from people who think the whole of the game comes with a bat. He was involved in what, 86 double plays last season? second in MLB. I heard people saying "you can't play short and make 17 errors." Tell that to Ozzie Smith who averaged 17 errors a year and is considered one of the best fielding SSs ever. It is all mediocre fans being armchair GMs without knowing what is important to playing the game. Mateo was #3 in WAR on the Os in 2022. Right now? I'd put him as #1. And yes... He wins games practically all by himself. Every run he erases by the other team makes it that much easier for the Os to win. I think you are wrong about Holliday. Put him at 2B or 3B depending on his arm strength. Mateo is the best right where he is. No one is going to beat his speed and instinct for several years, then move him to third. He is my favorite O... adn I haven't had one since Mussina.

I remember in 2022 the conversation was along the lines that Mateo brought energy and excitement but wished the bat was better. A little debate over his role and the young prospects coming up in the infield. Its like Mateo decided I am making my statement that I will be here. I'm still in awe of what he did in April. I enjoyed this breakdown and looking forward to see what he does in May.

Im so happy for the kid...because when he was in SD, everybody in the fanbase and even the clubhouse, knew that he was more than just a "pair of fast feet". Every now and then, he would flash more than just two tools. And you'd be like "wow...if he can ever just play more than he does, everybody would see the kid has some skills. When he played for the Padres, he was the fastest guy on the team, period...faster than Tatis..faster than Wil Myers (who can scoot)...faster than HK Kim. To be honest he is in the same hitting landed position in both that you want. All pre kick or whatever is prior to the loading position. If you freeze frame it in the position of pre swing, it is all loaded with his front heel up which drops to start the swing. Makes them able to adjust to offspeed.

One of many AJ Preller horrible mistakes he has made as a GM of the Padres. AJ Preller terrible at being patient and giving talented prospect a opportunity. AJ Preller is just obsessed with getting establish big name flashy players. Any GM could do Preller job with a high limit payroll takes no skills to give the most money to a free agent. Padres could had a lineup with Jorge Mateo, Jack Suwinski, Ty France, and Brett Rooker. 3 of the 4 was traded for nothing in return and Jorge Mateo was DFA.
