Technically, he "died" because some politicians were afraid of him, because he had dirt on them, iirc. In reality, he didn't died in y6. He just decided to acquire a new identity, and let his older one "die". He only did this, in order to protect haruka, haruto and pretty much, everyone in the orphanage. By doing this, he was a dead man walking essentially. He couldn't no longer hang out with whatever friends he has at this point, nor even interact with haruka, the kid and anyone else in the orphanage, as he is pretty much "dead". And thus, he became the man who erased his name. Occasionally showing up, because -RGG wants to milk as much content as they possibly can from kiryu- some trouble comes up every once in a while, which he can't ignore. Meanwhile, RGG doesn't care one bit about majima, even though the fans love him. He will never be given an happy ending, because RGG hates him! (why you not make him playable? Why only make him playable in like ONLY 2 GAMES?!)

Here’s the thing, Akira Nishikiyama (Kiryu’s best friend from Y0/Y1) can correctly identify Kiryu-since he is his best friend. Since we’ve never seen Nishiki interact with Joryu, we can never be certain if Joryu is Kiryu. Otherwise we would’ve seen Nishiki point that out.

I'm not buying it. You said it yourself, asset reuse is rampant in RGG games. Also a big deal is that they changed out his English VA, so it has to be a different person. Why would they go through the effort of only recasting 1 previous character (not counting that time when Majima was voiced by Mark Hamill), and nobody else? Seems like a waste of time to me. I think since this is his origin story, people are getting him confused with Kiryu because he doesn't have his Y8 hairstyle yet. Another piece of evidence against them being the same is that we see a picture of Kiryu in Gaiden on the Morning Glory, photo and they look nothing alike there. As for him having a karaoke song that involves Nishiki in flashbacks, remember that Kiryu was in jail for 10 years, and we don't know everything that happened in that gap. Same for the baby that vaguely resembles Haruto in the other song. Baby faces are often very similar and evidence pointing towards the flashbacks taking place in Hiroshima just like Kiryu in Yakuza 6 aren't applicable. We don't know how long ago Joryu was in Hiroshima. Plus, don't you think Kaito and Higashi would've recognized a legend like Kiryu on the spot in the side story involving them? They were both Tojo Clan, and certainly were around to witness Kiryu's rampages throughout Kamurocho in Y1 and Y2. I think this all points more likely to a Dead Souls sequel. Joryu makes a point to say that he's been dead for 3 years, but that's clearly not the case. Ryuji revived in Dead Souls so it's not unlikely for someone to return from the dead and look human. Yakuza Dead Souls: The Man Who Cheated Death coming to PS5 2025.
