Baltsa and Carreras are so expressive, you can sense the heartbreak of betrayal in the duet without even knowing the plot. Magnificent.

Gracias.

This was the first opera music I ever bought and I still love it. I know it so well i have even used this concert to compare and choose music systems over the years. Agnes Baltsa started me on a love of opera and I still hold her highest of all in my heart.
Jose Carreras you are the best tenor in the world.......and believe me I have heard many of them...... God bless you..... stay well.......!!!!!!!!!

We do not often hear much about Katia Ricciarelli who had a beautiful voice but a short career. It is said that she had an ongoing relationship with Carreras while he was married. I pass no judgment as life happens and we cannot speak intelligently about what we did not experience ourselves. However because of this relationship she took on roles opposite Carreras that were difficult, too big, or not well timed for the proper stage of development of her voice. As Carreras was close to Montserrat Caballe, a devout Catholic, Caballe did her best to convince Carreras to end the relationship. However it continued resulting in Ricciarelli doing damage to her voice causing it to become small and thin without the necessary push to reach the volume or the notes that are essential to a world class diva. It is an unfortunate series of events as her voice was not only beautiful but had a delicate and fragile tone so important to many of the roles of the soprano in opera and in fact she had many of the qualities that Caballe possessed who Riccharelli admired greatly. Unfortunately she would never achieve the combination of the light pianissimo that contrasted with an Earth shattering volume that became Caballe's hallmark. I have many of Ricciarelli's recordings which are now no longer released and I marvel at her delicacy and purity of tone.

Actually, José Carreras had already undertook roles too heavy for him by partnering on stage with Caballé due to sharing the same manager (Caballé's brother) and damaged his voice himself even before leukaemia got him, so if Katia Ricciarelli may have taken roles alongside Carreras, relatively heavy roles in lieu of Caballé, they were both wrong to sing them probably. If Ricciarelli made this mistake because of her love affair with Carreras, it's a shame she submitted to him professionally in addition to be "the mistress" while Carreras was married.

@@alejandrotm Yes, I could definately see that. He should have been more cautious with Richiarelli. It is amazing how much influence Caballe had on both of them. Because of Caballe's incredible pianissimo she could hold a high note that diminished in volume to the point of almost disappearing. However her voice was also powerful and could blast buildings apart. It is at full volume in a recording of Andrea Cheniere with Pavarotti where the finale duet is at an unbelievable volume as they were well matched (if not competing). While I have never been a big fan of Carreras because he tried to be much to be bigger than he actually was. His voice often felt dry and stretched at important moments. I think he pushed himself too far to be on par with Caballe and others. Interestingly you can detect the influence Caballe had on Richarelli who began to use the pianissimo in similar ways. Her voice suffered because of both of them, and became thin and small albeit still beautiful.

@@andrewbasile1847 shame Ricciarelli tried to emulate Caballé, that's never the way in lyric, imitations are just for fun, she should've stayed herself even if that meant lighter roles, same as Carreras, who may have restored his voice after leukaemia if he hadn't spoiled it already 😖😖

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I'd been a fan of José Carreras for several years but had almost given up hope of hearing him live in concert, first of all due to his terrible illness in 1987, then several concerts in London came and went without me being able to attend for various reasons. But I was lucky enough to get a ticket for this performance - what a night! Mind you, it was held in February and London had experienced some of its most atrocious weather for several years in the days leading up to the concert, with heavy snow and ice, and I was in a perpetual state of panic for several days, fearing that it might be called off, or that transport difficulties would prevent my being there. In the end all turned out well, and my abiding memories are of how José sounded exactly the same as he did on his recordings and how it really felt like he was singing to me, and me alone, all evening. It is such a joy to be able to relive the wonderful memories of that night 26 years ago.

LA MEDITATION from Massenet's THAIS has to rank as one of the great intermezzos in all of opera. It's glorious. Its themes are used at the end of the opera as THAIS is dying with the monk ATHANAEL by her side as she sings out that the skies are opening up to her.
