José Malhoa (1855-1933) began his art studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon at just 12 years old. Along with Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, he became one of the foremost figures in Portuguese naturalist painting.
Malhoa's residence, known as the Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum in Lisbon, was originally built in 1905 as both his home and studio. He also maintained another studio in Figueiró dos Vinhos, known as "Casulo" (Cocoon), which is open to visitors today. Towards the end of his life, Malhoa witnessed the opening of the José Malhoa Museum in Caldas da Rainha. He passed away in Figueiró dos Vinhos at the age of 78.
In 1980, Malhoa's house in Lisbon was transformed into a museum that now exhibits works by Malhoa and other Portuguese artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.
One of Malhoa’s notable works is the large 150x200cm oil painting The Drunks, from 1907. Depicting a group of men celebrating St. Martin's Day on November 11th-an occasion marking the maturation of the year’s wine-the painting exemplifies Malhoa’s commitment to naturalism, providing an ethnographic portrayal of Portuguese society at the time. Though The Drunks belongs to the National Museum of Contemporary Art, it has been displayed at the José Malhoa Museum in Caldas da Rainha.
