Joséphine Baker, c'est le charme, la gaieté, la fantaisie(le Panthéon en a besoin), l'exotisme, la générosité . Nous l'aimons tous !

I loved Josephine. She was extraordinary. I loved reading about her and listening to her recordings. Vocally she got better and better as she aged. There are many biographies about Josephine. My favorite is " Remembering Josephine" by Stephen Papich. He was a close friend of Josephine and tells her story very well. What Josephine accomplished was astounding. She went from being an uneducated chorus girl to becoming the toast of Paris music halls almost overnight. She became a millionairess and flew her own plane in the 1930s. She joined the French resistance during World War Two and obtained military secrets to help the allies. In the 1950's she spoke out and fought against racism in the United States She had been a smash in movie houses and in Las Vegas. Josephine fought against segregation and tried to change things overnight. Her stand against racism cost her her career in America. She was blacklisted in Vegas for the rest of her life. When she protested her treatment at the Stork Club ( they would not serve her because she was black) Walter Winchell started calling her a communist in print. Many people in America had no idea who she was. Strangely, she was an international star on the world stage but not appreciated in the US until 1973. Josephine adopted 12 children of different races and religions to show that people could live in harmony despite their differences. She meant well but that project (The Milandes and her center for Brotherhood) bankrupted her. Still, she kept going against all odds and had a spectacular come back at the Bobino in 1973. Josephine was an incredible person. It is too bad that a mini-series was not made of her life. Her life story would require 3 to 4 hours to tell. There was a TV movie starring Lynn Whitfield that only scratched the surface. Diana Ross tried for years to bring Jospehine's story to the screen without success. It is wonderful to have these KZbin clips and to actually see and hear Josephine.
