I had a blast making this video and this is one of my new favorite movies and even anime of all time. The video does sound a little cringe in retrospect, but I don't care. It's not monetized because I insisted on using the music, but that doesn't bother me. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do. :)

Josee to Tora to Sakana-tachi (2020) is originally a live action movie from 2003 about a disabled / crippled girl who meets a boy who then becomes her caretaker. It's very similar to Koe no Katachi / A Silent Voice, but better as it lacks all the pointless melodrama. This uses footage from Josee, the Tiger and the Fish (Josee to Tora to Sakana-Tachi) Cute Moments and Josee's Mermaid angel story. This is a review of Josee to Tora to Sakana-tachi (2020) / Josee, the Tiger and the Fish. The theme song is Ao no Waltz by EVE. 蒼のワルツ - Eve KAN/ENG/ROMAJI LYRICS (Josee, the Tiger and the Fish) josee, the tiger and the fish review

I wanna establish that Josee, the Tiger and the Fish after watching it recently has become one of my favorite anime movies of all time. However, I wouldn't say it's better than A Silent Voice. In fact, personally, I like A Silent Voice better. But I'm not here to say which is better, but more that they're very different movies that focus on very different things. For one, I have no qualms about your judgement of Josee, the Tiger and the Fish. You even touched upon basically my only real criticism which was the pacing. Additionally, I think the story is a bit simplistic, which isn't really a bad thing. And the romance was a bit simplistic as well but it works well enough for the purposes of the story. And to be honest I think Mai's character was a bit weak but I'm being real nitpicky at this point. It was a good movie. There were very positive vibes throughout the movie. And everything was very surface level, which I think is what you're describing as the movie feeling 'natural'. Which I agree I thought the characters were very natural. But mourning and loss can be a very prevalent event, so can the hardships of being disabled and mistreated because you're disabled. And the movie did not dive too deep into any of these topics, which is not a criticism I don't think it needed to. But they're definitely very real themes and I wouldn't fault any other story for deciding to dive deeper into those topics. A Silent Voice on the other hand is a very different movie. Although it also features a disabled girl and romance themes, I would not be so quick to lump the two movies together. Josee, the Tiger and the Fish in my opinion focuses on themes of perspective, sympathy, chasing your dreams, as well as disability. A Silent Voice is more of a redemption story about guilty, forgiveness, communication, the breaking and mending of relationships, social anxiety and mental health in general. It takes on a different tone and although it may utilize it's music more climactically to move the viewer, I would not call it 'cheap'. Music tugging on heartstrings is a way people like to enjoy and play music. Also, I don't hear many people talk about this, but the characters in A Silent Voice are in highschool, while the characters in Josee, the Tiger and the Fish are in their early-mid twenties. I actually think this is an important factor when comparing the two (if people want to insist on comparing the two) as it determines the motivations and maturities of the characters. Also, A Silent Voice doesn't focus as much on disability(I also don't think Josee focuses on it that much either) and the romance isn't as strong either, but I don't think they need to be. A Silent Voice is mostly about the main character's journey as he falls from grace and embarks on a path of redemption earning forgiveness, overcoming his own uncertainties, and becoming a better person along the way. And just because a character is disabled doesn't mean it needs to be a big focus all the time. I'm very glad that while Josee's disability was obviously very important to the story, it was not the MAIN point of the movie. Although it definitely could've been and that would've been fine. But it doesn't need to be either and I feel the same way about A Silent Voice. Both of these movies I related to on a personal level. I've had experience with someone close to me who uses a wheelchair, and I've also had a big part of my life influenced by similar events as the ones portrayed in A Silent Voice. Personally, I think the redemption story of Ishida in A Silent Voice and his whole character arc was most unique, felt very real, and was excellently portrayed, and as such makes that movie a lot more memorable for me. But they're both excellent movies in my opinion and I hold them both in high regard. I just don't agree with the whole 'melodrama' take on it. It has more drama in it, yes. Drama is very often included in film to varying degrees. But I wouldn't criticize it for it. It's just a different movie. But yeah I know the title is mostly clickbait, but I figured it was worth mentioning these two movies aren't simply "romance anime with disabled girl" copy pastes, but very unique and distinguishably valuable movies in their own right. The least thing I want is for these two movies to be grouped up together with subsequent movies that may feature a disabled anime girl, because it ultimately hurts both in my opinion.

Also just gonna leave a tl;dr A Silent Voice and Josee, the TIger and the Fish are both very good movies. They're also very different movies. And personally I wouldn't say one is strictly better than the other. It's okay to compare them, but they both have different plot structures, have differently motivated characters, different conflicts, and are about very different things with different themes and messages. For example, I think making comparisons like "this one focuses more on disability so its better" or "this one had more romance so its better" are poor value judgements in my opinion, since the movies aim to achieve different things entirely.

That's so true. The thing people seem to forget when watching this movie is that these characters are just kids, they are in high school that's why they can make stupid mistakes and can be stupidly immature. That's why this story can also be interpreted as a coming of age story.

I was curious to see if you had any thoughts on A Silent Voice since that's another movie I think gets way too much hype. I hadn't heard of Josee so I watched it before watching your review and all I can say is THANK YOU. This movie is exactly what I thought A Silent Voice was going to be, with an ending that actually had payoff. Also Tsuneo and Josee's relationship reminded me of Ryuji and Taiga's from Toradora so that was a nice plus. I may not have seen a lot of anime movies, but this one is my new favorite. By the way I'm sorry about your dad. I know how hard it is to care for disabled family members and I hope you hang in there.

A Silent Voice is good, but it's filled with melodrama like a lot of KEY stuff -- Clannad, Angel Beats, etc. -- so that brings it down. It sends a good message, but the movie is ultimately longer than it needs to be and it focuses less on the actual disability and more of the pity someone with it receives as opposed to Josee where it focuses on both. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've seen a fair amount of anime movies -- and anime in general for that matter -- but this has become my favorite movie in general, perhaps of all time. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm glad you did too! I also thought they looked kinda like the Toradora MCs too. Josee just bites instead of punches lol. I'm not sure if I mentioned it in the video, but it was actually my granddad I was talking about. I never had a father and was raised by my grandparents, so I just consider him my father. He had a lot of underlying problems outside of just being crippled -- like Hepatitis, Hemophilia, and so on -- but he was a swell guy. I never considered being around him a chore and I never treated him like he needed to be taken care of because he wouldn't want me too. I helped him only when he needed it and out of love, not pity, much like what Tsuneo does for Josee in this movie. He passed away at 46 I believe, when I was 14. I'm currently 25. I appreciate it though. :) I had actually forgotten that I mentioned him in the video lol.

I think what you’re forgetting about A Silent Voice is it isn’t a romance, it’s a story about self forgiveness. Even the manga which goes into way more depth doesn’t even clarify wether there is a romance or not. I think it’s wrong to compare the two movies, sure it’s similar in that one of the characters is disabled but that’s all there is to it. A Silent Voice touches on bullying, depression, suicide, anxiety, friendship etc. If people were expecting a romance then they should have looked up what the movie was about first, also I don’t know what you mean by A Silent Voice getting too much hype? It’s changed a lot of peoples lives, there is a few videos on KZbin about A Silent Voice saving people when they were at there lowest, my self included. It’s ok for people to like a movie or something over another but I think A Silent Voice gets all its hype for a reason, it’s an incredibly realistic story about a boy learning from his mistakes, and not only getting forgiveness from everyone else but hardest of all, getting forgiveness from himself.

@@To-To Not focusing more on the disability is not a very convincing point when comparing the two movies. I mean sure you might like Josee more for that but it doesn't necessarily make A Silent Voice a lesser movie. The two movies I don't even think can be put in the same genre so the way they tackle the same issues are way too different to be compared. But this is still not as funny as when people were comparing A Silent Voice with Your Name.

Thank you for putting this video up, as I've put on a few other reviewers, I really, really wish more people were talking about this film. I think another 5-10 minutes in its run time could have ironed out some of the 'glitches' - lack of development of secondary characters, Tsuneo being hit by a car so soon, and so on - but as you say, despite that, it's still a great film. As someone who's first job out of uni was supporting disabled students I agree there's so much that it gets right, and I love it that we have a film with a disabled person that neither patronises them nor is just about their disability - it is about *them*. Better than a silent voice? I don't know, both are great films, but from different points of view. Oh yeah, a shout out for the tracks by Eve that the film used, too!

I just watched this movie today and fell in love with the movie. The characters all felt like real characters as you said going through their own struggles. I enjoyed watching each of them having to face those struggles even the side characters. I loved how Josee was a brat at the beginning of the movie but because she was not use to outside world and always told Beasts lived out there. Then him coming along to show her that is wrong and helped each other build and grow. Him helping her move forwards to her dreams of painting and seeing the world outside her bubble and when he needed her the most after he gave up after the accident. Helping him get back his motivation to move forwards. God that part of her reading that book she made just for him made me cry so hard. Just I think they played off each other very well

this is an insane take to me simply because ichida is literally me well minus the bullying part at the time i watched it i was around 14 and i had lots of friends i actually didn't understand how a person could have no friends it always seemed unrealistic to me at the time when they would say a character doesn't have any friends. anyways what i mean is for people who think of themselves as lower than others or have an inferiority complex, Ichida is a perfect representation of what it's like. the X on people's faces is so real. we never really look at people, when we walk alone we look at the ground or blur out our vision into a tunnel so ichida's scene where he stops seeing Xs on people felt very emotional. I don't know how to articulate it. it's as if the world opens up once you've gain confindence in yourself. something similar happened to me. people aren't scary anymore. a silent voice's message is very simple it's just telling people to be courageous it's moving but josee's message isnt as clear to me at least the end of the movie left me thinking "so what now" like they left me with nothing. i'll never forget a silent voice but josee on the other end...

Well the statement that they forego melodrama is not rly true is it tho, with the scene where he is discharged from the hospital, on Christmas no less, and she disappears only to start a wild chase for the hole cast to find her, and she just goes to the zoo to see the tiger alone, even tho she told Mc-kun she'd be there when he gets out of the hospital was a bit much, not mention that she gets catapulted out of her chair into his arms.. @@cynosa7127 So just because YOU don't like Josee the tiger and the fish, you want others to hate it as well? That's wrong. Or do you just want people in a wheelchair like me be hated on because of our disability, the fact that we cannot walk? Respecting deaf people is fine. Because the deaf are also humans and deserve to be respected as such. But saying that people in wheelchairs are horrible is inhumane. You should be ashamed. The only reason why A Silent Voice didn't resonate with me, is because at any point throughout the movie, I couldn't find a moment where Shoko stood up for herself. She constantly says "I'm sorry" for what? I can understand that she hates herself, because she thinks of herself as a burden to others because of her disability. But Shoko just accepts the fact that she is being bullied without defending herself. She doesn't try to take her hearing aids back from Shoya when he is bullying her in 6th grade. Shoko has working hands and legs. She SHOULD be able to defend herself. She can't hear, but that shouldn't be an excuse for not standing up to a bully. We people in a wheelchair are often not able to defend ourselves from bullies because our hands and legs cannot function properly in order to do so. The best we can do is to yell at them. Shoko doesn't do that, either. Are YOU only able to sympathise with her because she is acting like an injured puppy? Or is she a character you have become endeared to? And then there's Shoya. He bullied a deaf girl mercilessly, damaged her hearing aids, and traumatized her to the point that she hated herself. Shoya deserves to suffer the consequences of his actions. He deserves to be ostracized by his classmates for what he did. Bullies do not deserve forgiveness, redemption or respect. They hurt others emotionally and physically because they feel bad about THEMSELVES. They're selfish.
