Very much. Charles Rosen, nobody's fool, certainly understood Hofmann's stature. That said, Hofmann makes the best case for a dimwitted piece of music that we can only smile and ask: what was all the fuss about?

@@gerontius34 Well, he's playing his teacher's music. It's a worshipful homage. And he plays the living hell out of it. He makes it a greater musical experience than your average ho- hum playing of say, the Beethoven 4th. And keep in mind, performance is the reason all of this music, Beethoven or Rubinstein, was written.
