Bravo!!! At only 21 years old too! I'm glad that he has been taking it slow and not burning himself out the past 10 years since then. I think as his voice ripens he could possibly become one of the few major tenors of our age.

What a rare and marvelous thing to hear a tenor of this generation sing with such control, fluidity, and beauty (and at only 21 years old!). Hearkens back to another time. It is amazing to me that Calleja didn't easily snatch up 1st prize. Thank you for this post, parsafalito, of the greatest tenor of our age.

Incredible singing for a baby tenor (21 years old). In the ten years since he sang this aria, he has gone from strength to strength and is a profoundly touching and musical singer. He has everything, musicality, voice, intelligence, stage presence.

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I have the same fascination listening to the quality & composition of overtones from Joseph's voice as I do listening to jussi, or Lauri-Volpi. Functional freedom has its own quality of emission that can't fail to excite & intrigue the listener. It also guarantees the voice its own unique 'fingerprint'. Bravo, Joseph.

He respondido a la invitacion del amigo Pawelp para ver este video.Y obviamente comentar: De la Isla de Malta de la cual es originario este tenor solo recuedo sus ejecutorias diplomaticas resabio de las Cruzadas Medioevales ,pero he quedado gratamento sorprendido de la calidad de Calleja. Su voz tiene lo esencial y mas: clara, tono y timbre agradable , buena pronunciacion,articulacion y cambios rapidos y con buena hilacion entre si,sin comprometer la respiracion.

Thank you for forwarding this young Calleja performance, my friend. I agree with everybody here : his technique mastery is amazing for a tenor his age and the difficulty of the aria. Yet, I'm not very attracted by his voice. Maybe the very fast vibrato or the lack of "metal" - I mean of density of the color...
