Great interview. Joseph keeps it real and down to earth. Thanks for the great work.

Amazing being, even if he doesn't speak a word his presence speaks all:) It's beautiful to hear a genuine Dhamma teacher -- a nice break from the self-appointed enlightened crowd.. Thanks, Joseph, sending you lots of metta :)

Excellent interview. JG is clear and concise, and sticks to what he has deep experience in, rather than resorting to guessing or trying for some sort of "all paths are one" type (fail) approach which most modern teachers attempt to do. Ditto for the "everyone gets there in the end", glad JG challenged this. This guy has years of experience and knows his stuff, and is unwilling to be baited into speculation, unlike most.

As I am listening to first part of interview... and as a student and practitioner of meditation ... i am appreciating Rick's thoughtful questions and Joseph's answers very useful ... they are the kinds of subtleties that make such conversations useful for meditation practitioners and are rare on KZbin ... ✨✨✨🌟💫💖💦

I greatly appreciated the expanded analogy from Joseph of light needing contact with an object in order to be manifest. This is great for understanding dependent arising. Furthermore, that analogy also helped me understand the references to the unmanifest in the upanishads, and the current developments of science investigating the hidden dimensions of dark matter.

I agree with Rick that the ultimate aspects of Buddhism and Advaita/non-duality are almost the same. Although they are different, perhaps more good can happen if their commonality is celebrated or even practiced. I am thankful that Joseph distinguishes between an effortful focus on being aware of something, versus simply noticing or feeling what is already going on. I expect naturalness and effortlessness in any very effective technique for spiritual growth; this is the great insight shared by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

The interviewer's interest in "attainment" reveals that he is not on the Buddha's path. Liked Joseph's remark that if you are talking about attainment, you are still clinging to the illusion of self.

Rick likes to push this litmus test theme for who is/isn’t “enlightened”. It’s a good thing. He’s encountered many interviewees who imply that they are “enlightened”. Most of them probably have recognised the non-dual, but most of them also continue to be dragged about by their ego. And causing damage to their students as a consequence. Ramana Maharshi said that your work is not done until there is no more, “I, me, mine” thoughts.

Non-clinging even to the idea of non-clinging. Though, as the Buddha said, the desire to achieve non-clinging must burn within us like a fire. Definitely more of an art than a science though. ;)

The Tibetan masters he was referring to would have been in the Dzogchen tradition and this goes back years ago with him. While at a Dzogchen retreat myself in the summer of '97 I'd heard he was being exposed to this.

MINDFULL CAN USE MANY KINDS OF DIFFERENT THINKING OR USE, bUT IF WE ARE TALKING ABOUT REAL MINDFULL IT IS USING HOW THE WAY WE THINK, AND HOW THE WAY WE UNDERSTAND TO BELIEVED AND PROVED WHAT WE THINK IS EXACTLY TRUE OR TRUTH,

I wonder if associating with a tradition or teacher / teaching boxes in the practitioner to other points of view which might assist with their awakening? Is it possible to take from all the traditions of the world without feeling your betraying teacher or tradition? thanks
@snoo33310 жыл бұрын
Reverend Eslam Thanks Reverend, having a master / teacher / teaching helps with ones journey. I just feel it holds us back when we associate with one spiritual set of ideas. This makes us try to figure out big picture with only one piece of the "puzzle". Most teacher / practitioners do not say this out loud but imply their style of spirituality is what gets someone to wake up. There are many doors to awakening to ones reality. My answer is slowly coming to me in bits and pieces. thanks

Yes, it is possible, but only if you value substance over form. Truth is truth. Obsession with tradition is very often the enemy of truth. In fact, the saying goes "If you meet Buddha on the street, kill him." In other words, betraying traditions is encouraged in the pursuit of "know thyself".

Reverend Eslam Wow, what self-serving hubris!
@inajosmood10 жыл бұрын
Ho do you know that to be True Reverend Eslam ? Many people got awakened by accident without intention to become so , without a master. Like Dan Flynn say;s Kill the Buddha. Truth is everywhere. It's right there when you're doing your job at the bathroom. It's there when you're behind your computer, when you're randomly looking in the distance. There is no limit to Truth. No one master can hold the Truth you have to see for yourself. So there's no way one master could be betrayed. They can only point you towards what's before your Exprience of Life has been formed, the Source and it's nature... That's how far their involvement goes. If they try make you believe something else, they don't see things clearly for themselves. It's innocent.

How does Buddhist tradition keeps the concept of "no self" and "re incarnation" together?
@SkyPanther89 жыл бұрын
+TOA (Transmission of Awakening) Your Ego is not reincarnated. In Buddhism, rebirth and reincarnation are different concepts. The "consciousness" you have in the "now" is what is reborn, and continues on. But not the self-ego. So you do not have a memory of the other self, but the past lives might carry over cause/effect, which is what some call "karma".

What role does ethics have in awakening , aren't ethics and morality just a man made concept created by egos trying to avoid death and pain for themselves and their tribe members?
@sfallo8 жыл бұрын
+Ebkallday Good question. In my opinion, ethics can affect the process of awakening very much. When you lie, cheat, steal, take life, etc. it affects you as well as the person you're doing it to. It's hard to sit on the cushion and look deeply and honestly into yourself, cultivate compassion, etc. after you just cheated on your wife or took your neighbor's bike. From this perspective, much of ethical behavior is about cultivating your own inner landscape so that you can come to an awakening, not because some outside force (God, law, etc.) told you to.

American philosophical pragmatism on an acid trip. Any religion worth its salt makes claims that are beyond the pragmatic. If it does not it is therapy and not a religion. I do not agree with Mr Goldstein's standpoint.

I practiced in the Thai Forest Vipassana tradition for close to twenty years...Joseph is great...But, his expression is very scholarly, dry and dull...Buddhism and as we all know meditation can be very juicy...I wish Joseph would have left his pulpit and spoke about his experiences...Buddhism is a religion of ethical conduct...They want connection to all beings first and then spirituality, whereas I see spirituality as the connection and thus basis for connection to all beings... Much Love!
