Incidentally, I'm a professional photographer and I decided to go with two camera bodies, one with the 12-40 PRO together with the other body having the 40-150 PRO as versus using one body with the 12-100 PRO. This is probably too expensive for the non-professional, but (even if you don't have a second body) I'd recommend avoiding overuse of any zoom feature -- other than for cropping the image -- as it's a distraction from the important job of "seeing" what's worth photographing (the image) and getting your exposure right. I long ago learnt not to fall into the trap of playing with the zoom effect, but to choose an optimal crop, then treat it as though it's a prime lens. As someone who teaches photography at an art school, I notice that students will always grab a zoom lens if given the choice. My advice is to just take one prime lens and use only that lens until you've thoroughly mastered its capabilities. Or, if you only have a zoom lens, then set it to each of its fixed zoom settings -- say 12mm, 18mm, 35mm, then 40mm -- and spend at least two shoots with the lens set to that power, until you become thoroughly familiar with what is possible with that setting. I'm sure you'll agree, Joseph, that this is the best way to get to know any lens and it'll repay your effort in choosing when to zoom in, when to zoom out, to get the very best from your lenses and your camera. I’m completely blown away with the 12-40! I was at a quick shoot and dropped my 45 1.2(it happened in slow motion and was terrible😂). Yes it broke. I ended up shooting the rest of the session with my 12-40. I typically would have one of my other primes with me but I didn’t. So anyway I shot the rest of it with the 12-40pro. The results were stunning. Some of my favorite photos to date. I don’t know why this surprised me but it was certainly a reminder of how great this lens is.

Whew! Now I at least I know I made the right choice. I just traded in my Fuji XH-1 for the EM-1 M II and the 12-100 Pro lens. So far, I am SUPER happy with it. I do mostly outdoor and need the reach of the 100. In fact, I'm really salivating over the 40-150 and 2x teleconverter for safari and travel work. The possibilities are endless! The 12-100 is good for vlogging as long as you have long arms (like I do). It's not light, but it's not horrible either. Thanks for the review!!

Be carefull of the built in lans shade of the 40-150, Olympus. It is very fragile, built with many roller bearigs in it's mechanism. Nice lens, very utilitarian. However; I do not know anyone who has not had issues with the lens shade mechanism and had to ship the lens back for repair. Without the warranty, the cost of the lens shade repair is about $300.00 by Olympus. Great idea, but way to sensetive to getting a hit and breakage. The lens itself is 1st class glass. Yes, the extenders are terrific. I'm a Lumix shooter, I'm going to put my 40-150mm Oympus on sale, very soon. I use the Leica Lumix 50-200, as my safari lens. I also use the Olympus 300mm F4, which is one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used. Comparable to the Nikkor 600mm F4 (new version) for full Nikon frame cameras.

When I bought the EM1X, I also purchased the 12-40 f/2.8 PRO, even though I was literally drooling over the 12-100 from the day it was announced! But I have to say, the 12-40 has been an outstanding lens with almost no weaknesses of any kind. Someday I might still get the 12-100, but the 12-40 will do for now. Excellent video by the way!

Hi Joe, absolutely love that some people (Trolls) gave you down-votes. 😄 who are these people? Great video, Joe. I'm a professional photographer who owns the other PRO zooms and I'm uncertain whether to buy the 12-100 f/4 PRO. My question would be "where's the sweet spot?" All zooms tend to be weaker at maximum zoom. So, if the 12-100 is better at 40mm, then that's the clincher. In terms of "weight and size balance". You are Also absolutely correct in telling people to think in terms of attaching the camera body to the lens, rather than the lens to the camera. You hold the lens. You don't hold the camera. You hit all the key points about why I chose the 12-100mm as my main lens on EM1mk2. The other really important benefit of this lens is its close-focusing capability. It really is very versatile. This only other lens I run on the EM1mmk2 is the 40-150/28.....also a stunning optic!

I was looking at the 12 100 but decided to go with the 40 150 and the 12 40, yes I know it's two lenses but for me it's a better combination that works. It's also worth mentioning that the Olumpus tele converter just wasn't worth the additional reach at the expense of all those stops

Very useful material. It confirmed me that I was right to have both; 12-100 excellent in decent light and open space, while 12-40 it helps me for low light and live concerts, especially indoor, as I do not have to rise the ISO value. I was lucky to find an used 12-40 in excellent condition at 460 euros earlier this month, so this could be an option.

This video makes me want to add the 12-100mm to my kit, but I probably won't. My photography is primarily about capturing memories of travel and family activities. My EM-1 MKII with 12-40mm PRO is an excellent system, but at times that bulk of that combo feels too conspicuous. The 12-100mm is even bigger, but it looks like a great lens for nature walks or outdoor portrait sessions.

This made me re-think my lens line up. I really love my 12-40mm Pro and 25mm Pro. I am going to sell my 45mm 1.2 pro and get the 12-100mm f4 pro. The key for me is that additional (dual IS) image stabilization. I do not do much low light with my EM1 M2 ( I use my Sony A73 for that)., but really love the video from my EM1 M2 and nature video shooting. The EM1 M2 produces stunning video and any additional help with hand held usage would be more beneficial to me. This was a great video Joseph and really helped me make this decision I have been thinking about for awhile now.

It is good to brush up on artificial lighting skills as well with the 12-100 which means it is even great at night with moving objects. F4 is especially good to ensure sharp dancing photos at weddings and my 12-40 is used there in any case particularly at 40mm as I use the fixed pro lenses for soft backgrounds or arty dark stuff, but realy prefer clever context as in bw street photography. (And dont forget the 45mm 1.8 at F4). I saw Joseph playing with Fuji lately and also find that I seem to have more m43 keepers than my fullframe (Nikon) which is more demanding in many ways. It is just ergonomically handy even with the 40-150 but even more so with the shorter zoom pros. And I will swear before a judge that my Olympus lenses will produce quality on a level playing field that stands back for no one. I always felt all my Nikon lenses were close but no sigar even if the bodies were superb. My Olympus cameras are like Harly Davidsons, it is just a permanent fun trip that I dont have to justify and the images speak for themselves. And I carry all my m43 lenses and side gadgets everywhere, except the long Leica when I am under a roof, because I can and not the case with my fullframe stuff. But mostly I pull out the 12-100.

Thank you for this great video. I have been pondering this issue for quite some time. I am also thinking of just carrying the 17mm, 25mm and 75mm primes while I hike rather than my 12-40 and 40-150 pro lenses. The little f1.8 lenses are so light in comparison. Do you think I would miss the convenience of the zooms? I know the image quality of the f1.8 primes is excellent. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me here. Great video Joe! Another scenario where the 12-40 would be a better choice would be astrophotography. Since your time is fixed for a given focal length (for pinpoint stars) lowering the ISO by a full stop is a huge benefit when dealing with the high ISO' s necessary for astrophotography.

Thanks for the video. Perhaps it’s also worth mentioning that those that consider to have both the 12-40mm F/2.8 PRO and the 40-150mm F/2.8 PRO iso the “Two-In-One” 12-100mm F/4.0 IS PRO is the compatibility of the 40-150mm F/2.8 PRO with both the MC-14 and MC-20 Teleconverters. That could extend the reach of the 40-150mm to 80-300mm. I choose to buy both lenses in the used lenses market, together with the MC-14. Set me back €1.500. A single 12-100mm F/4.0 would cost me €800. With the MC-14 the range of my MC-14/40-150mm is up to 210mm. Just over double the range of the 12-100mm lens (but no IS).

The 12-40 mm is useful for Video and Low Light recording and shooting hence could be used from wide angle to portait, as the prime lens. However, for Travelling, Sports and Landscapes then the the 12-100 mm is the choice.

Hi Joseph, To answer your question yes, the 12-100Pro will be able to use hi-res mode. I actually think it's the best lens Olympus makes for handheld hi-res if that's what you're going to do. I would only note that the 12-100 is heavier than the 12-40 so you would need to consolidate down from the 12-40 and another lens down to just the 12-100 to save weight. If I'm traveling, for example, I can often eliminate taking 12-40Pro and 40-150Pro by taking just the 12-100Pro. Last idea, I might also take a look at the 12-200 if you really need to get down to just one lens for travel.

I have the 12-40mm lens with original EM1 and they are such a great pair! For photo and video. I took this combo two days ago in San Francisco for the Chinese New Year Parade at night. Really nice pictures and videos. I just uploaded a short video on youtube. I want to ask you about video specs of this lens. I did some tests and I am positive that the focus is not lost when zoom in and out during video recording. Is this kind of parfocal lens? Thank you.

In video, I think it looks great up to about ISO 1600. At 3200 and above it's a bit noisy for my taste so those would be emergency only type ISOs.

K & J L The spec from Olympus is about 1 stop more IS with the EM1x and the 12-100 vs 12-40. For my work that means almost nothing because I’ll almost always have people in my images and they can’t hold still for long enough to take advantage of that difference. In the end the choice really about focal range, price and size but you can’t really lose with either.

I love the 12-100, but when you're walking with the barrel extended it does clunk as the barrel moves inside the main body of the lens, a bit disconcerting.

I'm getting the 12-40mm as kit sale with the m1 mk2 house 😊 also going to learn handheld night street photography. Street photography, not portrait photography 😉 for now I have the Canon eos rp and 50mm f1.8. No is whatsoever, so it's almost impossible to do the night street photography. At least with slow shutter. I'm really excited to get the m1 mk2, because of the house is and stacking function without the use of a computer. My phone is my editing tool. Many people can shoot the EM1MKII down into 3-4 seconds with good technique and steady hands. That won't of course help with subject movement but otherwise, it's really incredible what you can do handheld. Now for stars... usually that requires shutter speeds to be a bit longer than 3-4 seconds or you'll need a fast lens. I've successfully handheld for stars with f1.8 and f1.2 lenses but my best images of the milky way etc. still come from a tripod. My favorite for star-scapes is probably the 12mm f2. Congratulations on your new gear!

dzeng The AF speed on the 12-100 is fantastic. I would say for outdoor sports the lens would give you excellent performance. If you’re shooting indoors in poor light (ISO 3200+) that the AF can hunt more so I always switch to something like the 40-150 or 75mm to give more light to the system.

It's not necessarily an either/or choice. After much contemplation, I decided to buy the 12-40mm, even though I already had the 12-100mm, because I use them for different purposes. The 12-100mm is my perfect travel/landscape lens and I use the 12-40mm for indoor social events. (to help finance the 12-40mm, I sold my Panasonic Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4, which is also a great lens but seemed a bit redundant now)

Excellent video again thanks. I depend on the 12-100 for most work but after selling the 12-40, bought it back again for when I need more ambient light exposure with a zoom lens versatility. I have 1.2 Pro primes, but sometimes a zoom is needed for rapid scene changes. A stop of background light even when using flash, means using ISO 800 gives me the same "room light" background as ISO 1600 at f4.0... something I find "lifts" the look of my shots but with less noise... or it could be 1600 vs 3200... shutter speed remains at about 1/80 to avoid any subject movement blur. But if I had to have only one, it would be the 12-100.

I agree and I have the TC so my Equiv range is 420mm. Don't need IS in lens, use a monopod and my neck strap to add stability, and the extra F stop means I can double the shutter speed without increasing the ISO. With 2 lenses same max 2.8 I don't have to switch settings when switching lenses. I now have a range of 24mm to 420mm with TC , that is like 18 times zoom.

f3.5 a half stop down from 2.8, the jump from 2.8 to 4 is one whole stop (halving/doubling) of light. I actually have my cameras set to move apertures in 1/3 stops so I have 2.8, 3.2, 3.5, 4 as options for example. I hope that helps!

You gain 1 stop of IS with the 12-100 but you compensate that with 1 stop difference in maximum aperture (f2.8 vs f4)

I believe the dual IS works on my M5 MKII body as well as there is a setting in the menu called Lens I.S. Priority.

I think Lens IS priority is for the IBIS to switch off when using an IS lens as it could interfere in some cases. Being a photographer, I would’ve expected that you would have avoided presenting a show with a reflective surface creating plenty of unintended distraction and difficulty in discerning the real object from its reflection in the case of the lenses for instance. Also, watching your shirt move in the reflection, was a distraction all by itself.

The 12-100mm made me switch to Olympus after using Canon for 20 years. I’ve been using APS-C bodies during the entire run, from the original Digital Rebel in 2003, to the 50D and lastly the 70D. There just wasn’t any f/4 all purpose zoom the likes of the 24-105mm for full frame. The only lens available with sharp results and a good focal range is the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6, a good lens but on a crop body, bokeh would be even worse than f/4 on M43 and f/5.6 on APS-C sensor is not enough for low light. I was forced to use the 24-105mm on the 70D, which translates to a 38-168mm F/4. Pretty awesome range, but on the wide end, I’ve lost a LOT of potentially amazing shots and had to bring in a secondary lens; Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 to make up for the. wide end.. but still am missing the 16-24mm range (should have waited and bought the 11-20mm f/2.8). I can finally comfortably take just this 12-100mm, a single lens on any adventure around the globe and not have so much extra weight bogging down the pleasure of travel and photography. Photography should be FUN. Olympus has done exactly that with this lens, and am now an owner the E-M1 Mark iii. With the size of m43 lenses, I’ll be adding a Panasonic 9mm f/1.7 that weighs only 130g… less than an iPhone Mini. Great for Ultra Wide and low light. Wish I got into this system when this lens was announced… my portfolio would be so much more diverse.
