Note, the Boya shock mount for audio is no longer available at Amazon. Olympus makes its own version of the shock mount adapter (SM2), but it doesn't look like Amazon carries it. Amazon does have a similar shock mount adapter (Movo SMM5-B) that you might want to adjust the links for. I picked up the LS-P4 in 2019, and I'm just starting to look at using it with my E-m1 mark II (hence my interest in the video). As I was playing with it, I noticed that is it uses a rechargeable AAA battery to power it. I could imagine if you are shooting events that take all day, that it would be useful to throw a few charged NiMH AAA batteries in the bag to swap out if the LS-P4 batteries are drained and you don't have a chance to recharge the LS-P4 with a USB charger. I hate battery operated devices that have an integrated battery with no provision replacing the battery during the day. It is a shame that the LS-P4 dropped the PCM sync functionality that the older LS-100 had, where the E-m1 mark II and E-m1x could tell the LS-100 when to start/stop recording. It is also a shame that the E-m1 mark III also seems to have dropped this functionality.

Thanks for this. I'm wondering if the E-M1 II now makes more sense for video than my Panasonic G85...especially with that phase-detect autofocus system working as well in video as it does for stills. Also, is there any reason to use the LS-P4 over my Zoom H1N? What about the LS-P100 FOR XLR and high-bitrate recording?
@alfredpaoloconfiado28645 жыл бұрын
I actually just purchased the Olympus em-1 II to upgrade from my Panasonic G85. I never liked the larger sizes from Panasonic's offerings and don't have a need for 10-bit video. I'm testing out the benefits of EM1.2 over the G85 to see if it's worth it for me. So far I really love the camera but I have to use it past this little honeymoon phase to really see.

I know this is an old reply, but the G85 has one feature that the E-m1 mark II doesn't have, namely the ability to record live events that are more than 1/2 hour without stopping and restarting the video, unless you use an external HDMI recorder.

I have noticed a bug with Firmware 3.0, when you have extended the screen, the eye sensor still disables it when something gets close to the EVF. Previously the eye sensor got disengaged as soon as the screen is moved out from its resting position. This is really annoying at times. For instance, if you want to hold the camera low to your waist doing semi candid street shots looking from above. This is no longer possible unless you disable the eye sensor. If you have an E-M5 MKII you can compare, since it still has the original behavior.

One of the things I liked with the G9 was being able to have auto image review off and being able to press the image review button while the buffer was clearing and when the buffer cleared the camera remembered that the image review button had been pushed and showed the last image. Excellent Olympus has added that and improved on it. With Olympus, when the image review button is pressed. If the buffer is clearing, they immediately show the last image taken. It doesn't even wait for the buffer to clear. This is awesome. I keep Auto Image review off. Because I'm doing running gun and I want to keep seeing what is currently happening in the viewfinder like using a DSLR. But I have to check the histogram to expose to the right. This lets me do both those things. This was on my list for things to add to this camera or add to the Mark III. I still want a my menu. But this modification directly improved my photography experience.

They updated the art filters, too, which I don't normally use, but it actually looks really nice! 😅 I thought I'd have a play with it, and found out it makes the image really similar to an Instax film look, with dark green shadows and blue-pink skies. Hi, Joseph! Thanks for a very nice review! I was wondering how do the microphones in LS-P4 compare to the STEREO mics such as Rode Stereo VideoMic pro or similar photography mics from other producers. I understand, LS-P4 has a fancy AD converter but what about the mic itself? Another thing: the fixation solution on the camera is very strange. The unit protrudes to the back (not the front) of the camera. Won't it disturb you taking photos using the viewfinder?

So, that's nice how it works with an external recorder, but is that only with Olympus recorders? I have a Zoom H1. Obviously, you can output 3.5mm audio from any external recorder, but I seem to remember Olympus promoting its LS-100 recorder as a high-end audio solution that can be plugged straight into the camera via USB. Also, I've heard complaints online about the pre-amp on the E-M1 II. Do you think it's usable, or is the recorder a necessity?
4 жыл бұрын
LS-P4 has one additional gem inside. When USB is configured as PC connection, it acts as audio in and audio out device. And since it offers much better audio quality than any builtin laptop mic, it is a great solution for conference software like Zoom etc... And even better, it charges NiMH inside when connected that way. I paired it with my OM-D E-M10 M3 for everyday Zoom meetings. Too bad that this camera doesn't offer clean HDMI out - battery meter always present in video mode, turn on face tracking and it gets even worse with this rectangle put on your face. But with battery meter and continous AF plus LS-P4 audio it is no match for any laptop.

Well for my 2 cents, I really like the nine-box option with center priority AF for stills in conjunction with back button focus. That setting which I've been using on the EM1X has been pretty bulletproof for action stills. If we're talking video AF with the EM1.2 I think C-AF single point is the best we can do for moving objects. One setting you can change up is the C-AF sensitivity if you're looking to tweak the camera's performance for your specific subject.

@JosephEllisPhotographer5 жыл бұрын
I've been very happy with my Sennheiser MKE 600 going into the EM1X and EM1.2 and with the LS-P4 I tend to turn down the gain to -5 in-camera and increase it with the LS-P4 which I think gives awesome quality. Also anytime your piping the audio into the camera you'll also still get the LS-P4s internal recording so you'll have that just in case. I hope that helps, those are just my experiences, nothing scientific.

Thanks for the video. When the LSP-4 is mounted on the hot shoe with an adaptor like that or the one that Olympus show in their features, you cannot use the EVF viewfinder as the audio device will be banging on your head! So I guess most people flip out the screen when taking video with this setup? I was looking at taking some wildlife video with LSP-4 audio and a 300mm F4 - so maybe I will look for some hot shoe bracket that allows to use the EVF with this setup - I find EVF easier with long lenses!
@JosephEllisPhotographer5 жыл бұрын
With the shock mount i use in the video you can still use the viewfinder. It's not 100 percent out of the way but because the top of the mount allows you to move it forward it's the best solution I've found for the LSP4.

@@JosephEllisPhotographer Thanks - I ended up getting a "Movo DSE4" 4 inch cold shoe extension bar. It allows to mount the LS-P4 and a pixel remote trigger for the additional scenario when I want to video wildlife from a hide remotely 'hands off'. Just a shame that Olympus don't support the USB "pcm recorder link" Em1mk2 video sound option so the LS-P4 audio can be started by the camera. The older LS-100 recorder supported this. Sure, saving your settings is by default part of the Olympus Digital Camera Updater application. You should be prompted before the actual firmware update to save all settings which are then automatically restored at the end of the process. You can also use the app to do a backup of your settings anytime. As far as Lightroom Presets... that really depends so much on your style but I love Mastin, DVLP (Jose Villa), Cascade and maybe the ones I use the most Alien Skin Exposure X4. I hope that helps!

Hi Vito - The first thing I would check that the record level of the camera is set to 0 or lower, it's definitely better to have the volume boosted by the LS-P4 than increasing the gain on the camera. @JosephEllisPhotographer5 жыл бұрын
It’s pretty easy - just use a mini to mini headphone cord to connect the headphone jack on the LSP4 (not the mic jack) to the mic jack of the EM1MKII. Set the record volume on the camera to 0 and then adjust the record volume of the LSP4 and start recording on that device. Last check the levels on the camera and adjust as needed. The headphone jack of the LSP4 is acting like a line out to the mic input of the camera. The only thing I wish is that hitting record on the camera would also start the LSP4 but that doesn’t happen so I start the recorder first and then the camera. The nice thing is that you do get the sound recorded on both the camera and the LSP4 as a backup.

Going to that extra screen to adjust ISO, while showing me my over and under exposure, it's nicer than other manufacturers that just have a dead ISO adjustment, but it's still a little strange.
