#Methmouth is a term used to describe the severe tooth decay and gum disease found in Methamphetamine users. This dental condition often causes rapid decay and destruction of the tooth structure causing the teeth to break off or fall out.
When an individual is addicted to methamphetamine, their teeth can be characterized by being black or stained. They may also be rotting, crumbling or falling apart. In many cases the teeth are so badly decayed that they must be removed. Meth Mouth is caused by a combination of psychological and physical changes in the body causing Xerostomia (dry mouth) and extended periods where the user doesn't brush or floss their teeth. Perhaps the primary culprit behind the rapid tooth decay is the fact that #Methamphetamine is acidic. That acid will rapidly eat away at tooth structure.
Furthermore, #Meth has been found to contain chemicals such as battery acid, drain cleaner, lantern fuel and antifreeze. Meth users often crave high-calorie, carbonated, sugary beverages.
Another contributing factor to meth mouth is that users may grind or clench their teeth. Moreover, smoking Methamphetamine can debilitate the salivary glands, causing dry mouth and more rapid tooth decay.
Can meth mouth be treated? In most cases the answer is no. Since meth mouth progresses so rapidly, often times the teeth are so damaged and decayed that they have to be removed and replaced with dentures or dental implants. In rare cases, where the meth use has been minimal, the decaying teeth may be fixed with fillings, crowns or veneers.
Smoking meth can not only harm your teeth and cause meth mouth, but it is very harmful to your entire body. It pays to take care of your body, and if you have a healthy mouth, you will be healthier!

I’ve never taken drugs in my entire life, just had a bad accident by falling into wooden stairs and abusive parents that didn’t care and anytime I’ve gone to a dentist they just treated me like I was some kind of addict. First time I ever went when I was 16 and that’s because the dentist threatened to sue for neglect. Went to a few appointments, then finally went back when I was 18 to see what I could do for myself since I was on my own. $30k+ made me never go again and now 90% of my teeth are ripped out by yours truly with a screwdriver and a steak knife. Worst pain I’ve ever imagined and I go through it every single day. 32yrs down, whoever knows how many is left

Heartbreaking or annoying? Drug addicts (and smokers) are generally impulsive and stupid, knowing what they're getting into and doing it anyhow. Society wastes a lot of time coddling self-harmers and treating them as "victims," even when they rob for their habits.

I destroyed mine by 21 just by soda and sugar addiction. Went through three months of non stop dental appointments. Never had so many needles stabbed in my mouth, I got pretty good at it. Like 6 months later I had a tooth get badly infect. My one side of my face swelled all the way up around my eye. Had to get it removed by a surgeon and I cried in agony when they stabbed the needle in the infected gum. Like an out of body experience it was so painful.

I am applying to dental school in a few months and have been a dental assistant for the past two years almost. I have never seen anything that resembles this, but in the beginning it can seem weird. But now, I can see almost anything and not be put off... you see it as a patient that needs help or an interesting case. IMO its better than smelling gastric juice while a general surgeon, cutting off warts as a podiatrist, etc etc. If you want to be any kind of doctor, you will be dealing with people's health problems which can oftentimes resemble what's outside the norm

My mouth looks like I have "meth mouth" but that isn't the reality. I've never touched an illegal drug in my life. I had to have a radical hysterectomy due to cancer, and throughout the entire recovery (including the time it took for my body to acclimate to menopause) I was sick what seemed like non-stop. I actually had a physician years later ask me if I was bulimic, but no. On top of years of abuse by my now ex husband and a deep, deep depression, I feel stuck. I managed to get my top teeth pulled, the next step was to do the bottom teeth (which need surgical removal), but the judge in our divorce terminated the insurance I had. As a single female with no dependents, I didn't qualify for Medicaid at that time. I finally found an oral surgeon and I was supposed to see him in March, but guess what..... yeah. The one thing I absolutely hate the most is all of the stigma I get from everybody. It doesn't matter one bit how much pain I am in, if I have an abscess, a clearly freshly-broken tooth (because they are literally just falling apart at this point), or anything. They all take one look and completely disregard me as a drug addict. I have been in more pain these last couple of months than I can even begin to explain.

I’ve got bad teeth from a terrible past with addiction… but my teeth wouldn’t have gotten so bad if since I was 21 and seeing a dentist after 5 years of drug use, I was literally shamed for the state of my teeth. I’ve always since then been too embarrassed. I know it’s oxymoronic and contradictory. I’ve gone to several other dentists that actually ended up doing really shotty jobs on my fillings that came out within a year that I felt I wasted my money on… I also don’t have the money to get them fixed. But I do have insurance now and my 2022 goal is to see a dentist and get these all fixed soon. Im only 37 and have 4 missing molars. One on each side. It’s so embarrassing and depressing. Im just glad my smile area isn’t affected. Just my molars.

I just wanted to add that you can get severe acid erosion from drinking coffee, especially with cream and sugar all the time. I used to work at Starbucks and I was always drinking coffee not thinking about it being acidic, I just kept drinking it to get through shifts. I’ve been told by two dentists now that my enamel is very thin for my age and I get so down about it. Also, I was taking antidepressants which cause dry mouth and I had a Vit D deficiency, all of these things together compounded the tooth erosion.

I had really nice teeth as a teen and ruined them with purging (stomach acid) and a 10 year period of excessive ecstasy, cocaine, and heroin use. Along with smoking a pack of cigs a day. I have six of my molars that had to be pulled because I couldn't afford to get crowns. Now that I am sober and I have a real job with real insurance I'm able to go to the dentist I just had three crowns (several root canals) and about 6 fillings done. I don't do drugs or smoke cigs anymore. We do recover. The emotional and physical damage of even only a few years of drug use can take way longer to fix compared to how long your actual habit was.

@@DefundTheFringesvery narrow minded opinion, while I agree that can be the case to chalk it all up to just that is just textbook ignorance and wanting to kick people while they are down. I have had the unfortunate veteran experience of being heavily surrounded and grown up in an environment all my life around so many different addicts, some are immensely hopeless and a waste of everyone’s time and energy though these people in my experience are not as common as you’d think. Most addicts are actually relatively able to function and work ect because they have enough brain cells to understand money helps pay to keep a constant flow of your addiction going. Yes addiction almost always stems from not being able to cope with current life or past trauma/both but the way you worded that is disgraceful, some people have been through absolute hell that you couldn’t even imagine and who’s to say it’s wrong of them to use these substances if it makes an otherwise unbearable life bearable for that individual as long as they are not causing any harm to others. Lots of scum bottom feeders use drugs but a lot of ex veterans who fought for your freedom and right to make a comment like this also take them because their quality of life otherwise is a self inflicted bullet to the head, don’t be an ignorant nonce and judge people you know nothing about because they are struggling with substance abuse issues.

I actually ended up getting diagnosed with dentinogenisis imperfecta type 2. I know drugs harmed my teeth but i have been told im going to lose them all. Im 29. You had me until "I know drugs harmed my teeth but..." I come from a family where most of the people ended up on meth or crack by the time I became an adult. They didn't have the best teeth in the world prior to their addictions. Yet, usually you don't need all your teeth extracted unless you are doing drugs. I have relatives right now who need dentures and teeth extractions due to meth/crack.

@ oh you a dentist? my teeth were disintegrating before I took drugs, I got into drugs because I was abused by my step father and my family were all doing drugs or boozing, I was around drugs always. I have dentinogenisis imperfecta type 2, that means the dentin didn't form correctly, with over large pulp chambers with cervical constriction, that causes the enamel to wear off and the teeth break, not only that but they also wear down into the gum line. I DID ask go what extent did drugs damage my teeth, I was told by 2 dentists yes, drugs didn't help, but the vast majority of the damage was because of genetics, IT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN SOONER OR LATER. Well, I guess you, a fud off KZbin knows better than a dentist. Drugs may be a choice but your WAAAY more likely to develop problems if your immersed in the drug culture as a child, in other words, unvoluntarily immersed seeing as kids can't just leave. Even in non smoking users I’ve seen absolute destruction of their mouth. The grinding wears down teeth at an all time rate and like he said the dry mouth contributes to even more rapid decay because germs are being washed away like the mouth naturally does when a person isn’t under the influence of methamphetamine. I’ve been clean for a year now and I’m still dealing with mouth pain and habitual tooth grinding from using so much over the course of five years of off and on use.

I started smoking at 12 and changed over to dipping Copenhagen long cut when I was in the Infantry (did it for about 4 years). I lived hard… I stopped tobacco at 27 (after medically retired from being blown up and shot), and got nicotine free at 30 (11 years ago). I have a lot of fillings, and just recently had to have two bottom right rear ones removed. I have great oral hygiene now, and will have implants here in the next couple months… I didn’t think about the damage I was doing to my teeth back then whatsoever. Life is wasted on the youth.

As a chemist, attributing this to acids didn’t sound right. Many (most) common drain cleaners are strong bases, not acids. Lantern fuel isn’t an acid. Anti-freeze is also a base. But I DID find one reference to it being caused by acid and since it says exactly what you said, you either wrote it or read it. Most explanations are centered around poor hygiene in meth users, particularly oral hygiene, and that meth users eat lots of sweets and sweet beverages. (And acids are produced when the sugars are broken down.)

Hello, new subscriber here! Thank you for making these videos, I've found them very informative and wish I'd come across them sooner! Could you share your thoughts on mouthwash with alcohol vs. mouthwash without alcohol? My dentist recommended to me a brand WITH alcohol but I've read articles online saying that can lead to gum damage and I'm unsure how to proceed.
@josephrnemeth
@josephrnemeth 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Stefanie, that's a great question! Such a great question that we're considering doing a whole video on it. However, I will spare you the anticipation. 😁 Mouthwash with alcohol tends to dry out the tissues in the mouth much more than non-alcoholic mouthwash. Furthermore, if you have a dry mouth, you're much more likely to experience rapid tooth decay than if you don't have a dry mouth. So what I would say is, if you have a naturally dry mouth, OR if you're experiencing tooth decay, don't use alcohol mouthwash. Stay tuned for a more comprehensive response on our channel. Thanks Stefanie!

If you are getting dry mouth from talk to your doctor or dentist. They can prescribe you a high fluoride toothpaste that helps protect the enamel breakdown. Have them write you a script and don’t get it through the dentist office. Pick it up at the pharmacy. Usually insurance or goodrx will cover most of it. I think I pay $3 or $4 bucks a tube with is price for toothpaste but way cheaper then crowns or implants. I take an oral medication and that in comb with another medication that gives me dry mouth it has done a number on my teeth, particularly the bottom back front where the medication has to sit for a few seconds, but since I started using the toothpaste everyday the enamel wear virtually stopped.

Hey doctor. I posted awhile ago about trigeminal neuralgia with a slightly infected tooth, soft picks, and hydrogen peroxide. You might remember it, but not problem if not. I found out I had iron anemia from celiac. And oddly enough, these painful situations happened after B-vitamins and CoQ10, which probably meant the nerve was healing. BUT, I had TMJ problems, very, very likely from the iron anemia. And the whole situation probably culminated in this trigeminal neuralgia like situation. I highly doubt the nerve was being damage, but that the radiating tooth pain and posture from the anemia would cause these rare attacks. The last attack I had I took the iron pills I had, and within an hour I felt great. The tooth pain minimized to almost nothing, and I could this great bloodrush after my jaw finally relaxed. Add in lower exercise, and breathing issues, I'm sure just not enough innervation to the nerve and problem. Now I'm better than ever.
