A new experiment from KSL's COLD podcast team points to a particular power tool as a possible murder weapon in the December 6, 2009 death of Susan Powell. COLD host Dave Cawley breaks down the evidence suggesting Josh Powell might have destroyed a Ridgid impact driver with an oxyacetylene torch the night after his wife disappeared.

Exactly! Having been a teacher for 22+ years for “at risk” students #1Rule is to trust your initial gut instinct. #2 ALWAYS report and follow up with students actions, lack of actions, and verbal conversations, physical appearance, eye blocking your own eyes, etc. Highly sounds like all supervision visits need to take place in an area created inside the LE headquarters (bowling, small skating rink, karate lessons, etc per age activities to ensure the conduct of children and social workers.

@heidiho5179

One child actually told a teacher (I can’t remember if he also said it in a police interview) that Mommy rode, in the trunk, to camping. When police asked about where they went during camping, The child said in “the place where the crystals grow,” and it was noted they typically form in caves out there. When they asked what was mommy doing in the place with the crystals, the child said she just wanted to sleep there. I am not adding any interpretation to what I saw and documentaries and read in the book about this case. I seem to recall there was some discussion of mommy being left to sleep in the “ please where the crystals grow” and also setting up camp elsewhere, but I’m not going to expound on that since I can’t remember. Just saying, your idea is on point. Maybe you’ve read all this, too, but it certainly came to mind after reading your post

@@heidiho5179 Thank You. Yes, i frequently was in Idaho then, spending most time in Idaho County, at Cottonwood, and Nez Perce. The story was very upsetting; people there aren't bullshitters, so they didn't believe Josh's story at all....camping at 02:00? With little children he goes out to the snow, and wild. Personally, i believe that Steve Powell, killed, Susan. Steve died of cancer in prison, a convicted pedophile. He was obsessed with Susan until he died; he was recording songs that he had written for Susan, i first heard the songs when, Dori Monson, of KIRO radio, Seattle, played excerpts on his show. Steve was a sexual psychopath, i believe that Josh was a child abuse survivor. Why didn't they arrest Josh? He would have cracked, and talked. Then Dad would have been in trouble. Stockholm Syndrome.

It is very clear - Susan was drugged with the pancakes that Josh cooked that lunch time (not mentioned here) .. She was with a friend and said she would lie down as she was not feeling well. Josh likely then bound her with the kids in their room. He then used the impact driver to drive long screws into her skull obviously killing her. THe reason for the fine blood spray on the tiles was that he possibly hit the trigger when the tip of the driver was covered in blood - it then spun off in fine droplets. It sounds gruesome but this matches what we know and why he was so interested in burning up the impact driver as it would have blood in crevices he could not clean out effectively. There are hex head roofing screw s that fit into a hex magnetic driver on these drivers and this more or less makes the screw part of the tool while it is being driven. you can't uses such a small unhandy tool to batter someone to death without leaving large blood spray all over - it's just not enough like a hammer. You suggested he could’ve used the tool to kill her after drugging the pancakes but it’s possible he could’ve ummm... used the tool on her temple or something too. Ugh, just thinking about this I have creeped myself out. My heart goes out to Susan’s parents and Josh’s sister Jennifer graves who tried to record him with a wife and cooperated with police. Of course my heart also breaks when thinking of how scared Susan must’ve been in her marriage for who knows how long and when thinking of how scared the boys must’ve been in their final moments. I hope they were unaware of anything regarding the true motive for that “camping trip” and when wondering where their mother was. They were so young I think they still trusted their father up until he killed them and that just shows how young and innocent they were. I wish Susan could’ve gotten out of that abusive relationship, of course I’m not blaming her at all just wishing it could’ve turned out differently. At least i wish the system hadn’t failed the kids and they could’ve stayed with Susan’s parents. This case is tragic, any loss of life is tragic but kids and animals or developmentally delayed people who are victims of foul play particularly bother me. I feel that any strength we are fortunate enough to have comes with a proportionate responsibility to protect those who are more vulnerable (or any strengths we have been given depending on your view).

Well on one episode their neighbor or some lady his wife knew I was helping her crochet and she was invited over for dinner and Josh who apparently never did anything who's cooking dinner shortly after his wife 8 she was feeling very ill so Josh had decided that for his wife's guests would be a good time for her to leave because his wife's not feeling well so with that I think is the perfect opportunity for him to have his wife feel ill pretty much knock her out and then pack everything up in the van at midnight and supposedly go camping which we all know is not true because one of his little boys had stated mummy was with us but she didn't come home with us

Through listening to this series, I have my own personal theory, is it right? Hard to say till we find Susan’s remains to confirm. Based on how Susan was feeling nauseous the few weeks prior to her disappearance, it’s likely Josh was using sun substance to poison Susan. Not sure what it would be, but maybe something that had something related to blood appearing on the couch. The couch was wet and small droplets of blood was found to be Susan’s was on it. We know that a clean up happened right before the boys went camping, the question is if Susan was volunteering to join them or if she had already passed and Josh carried her body for a family member (likely Michael) to pick her body up and depose of it secretly while Josh was with the boys. Just a theory, but we know that Susan likely wasn’t stabbed or mutilated because of the lack of blood around the house except the small bit by the couch.
@pinkpugginz
@pinkpugginz 2 жыл бұрын
the blood spray was probably when josh was carrying her out and she coughed, expelling a tiny amount as he hauled her by. the cadaver dogs never hit on the van. so she was drugged, incapacitated till almost dead, then taken to a secondary location and actually killed and dismembered. he probably burned her body into tiny pieces and wrapped them in the tree branch plastic with lye or some other decomposition accelerant. he must have coated the rental car trunk in plastic and put the pieces in so many layers of plastic or containers. mind blowing.

An impact driver is too small and there are many tools and objects that would be better to kill someone. However he had said to friends that throwing a body down a mineshaft and covering it over was a good way to dispose of a body. It's possible he used the impact driver when disposing of her body, maybe to remove a covering of an old mineshaft. Who knows for sure, but chances are he had the drill in the boot with her body. There must have been some DNA on the impact driver, otherwise he wouldn't have gone to the bother of destroying it.

Horrifying. Right after my parents got married, the only job my dad could get was at a slaughterhouse. They used pneumatic drivers to kill the cattle, by shooting bolts into their brain stems. It was such a horrific, tramatizing thing to witness that my dad- a big, strong, street smart native of Gary, Indiana who had worked in numerous refineries, factories and refineries- was a vegetarian for years afterwards. Just thinking of that happening to a human? Beyond nightmarish to even conceive of. But not, I'd think, beyond the capabilities of a monstrous man who was perfectly willing to burn his two young, innocent children to death.

idk what this is but I appreciate your experience in depth on this, BUT though they found a small evidence of blood in the home it wasnt enough to say a "crime with substantial injuries " occurred, IMO if he did something to this degree in the home, there would be more blood evidence. I think he drugged her, strangled her. wrapped her up put her in the tote of some kind and IMo. he may have took his tools to do something to the tote to never open or come apart. maybe destroying the tools AFTER that. but to say it was the murder weapon I I respectfully disagree

Ellis the detective was completely incompetent. I have no doubt at all that if Josh had been interrogated by a more aggressive confrontational Detective he would have broke during the first interview when faced with the BS he was spouting that Ellis let slide. IMHO Ellis shares some blame for the murder of those kids.

From listening to other interviews it seems there was a time lapse which would allow Josh to dispose of evidence, as well as an unsecured potential crime scene, which even Josh's sister said was cleaned up before any forensic team investigated. This reminds me of the Watts case where police allowed other people to enter into a crime scene and contaminate evidence.

I like your theory, and thanks for another video! I have always thought that Susan had to be quite sedated for Josh to be able to kill her using any method. I wonder why he didn’t use suffocation or strangulation to avoid blood evidence? How do the microscopic blood spray droplets fit into the theory? How much blood loss would one expect if Josh used a tool like that? God rest her sweet soul, and the boys’ too. 🙏🏻
@Glorindellen
@Glorindellen 3 жыл бұрын
my theory was she was drugged, tried to get up but fell due to being drugged, possibly while Josh was trying to get her to move to the van with assistance from him or possibly because the drugs caused her to become nauseous and she tried to get to the bathroom (did she vomit some on the couch, which is why he cleaned it?) Then after she was in the van, perhaps he placed a bag over her head to suffocate her. The power tools were used at a remote location to help conceal the body, then Josh destroyed something that might have forensic evidence on it but not necessarily DNA. I read a comment on a video where someone was camping near the quarry where Josh stopped on his trip to or from Wendover why being surveilled from a plane on loan from the DEA and they smelled a foul smell at a large water tank nearby. What if he used the impact drill to drill out a lock on the tank, then place the body inside? Perhaps I'm wrong on that point, but I don't think he would have killed her in the house. He was into true crime and would most likely have known that cleaning up blood evidence only spreads it around more, though undetectable to the naked eye, efforts to clean it up will be very obvious on a luminol examination. Perhaps he used to impact drill to finish her off at where ever he dumped her, because forensics wouldn't be an issue there. Unless her body is ever found, we'll never know...
@foresttales506
@foresttales506 3 жыл бұрын
Glorindellen Thanks for your thoughtful response. I’ve been conflicted about whether or not he killed her at home. The tiny blood spray droplets and the small smears of blood on the couch are highly suspicious to me. I mean, how did the spray pattern happen? But transporting a bloody body could be incredibly messy, and it makes more sense to do anything messy outside of the house. Considering the barren earth and snow, it may be hard to cover up a gruesome crime scene outdoors, unless well planned. Of course Josh was planning this for many months. I wish so badly that the police would have pursued a search warrant and seized the house, van, and his clothing the first night so Josh could not continue the cleanup. I hope so badly that she is found someday.
@Glorindellen
@Glorindellen 3 жыл бұрын
@@foresttales506 Considering there was a blizzard going on, any visual evidence would have been covered quickly by the heavy snow, both falling and being blown about. But let's say that he put down a tarp first, placed her on it, finished her off, then wrapped her up inside the tarp, using the tree wrap to keep it tightly contained. so that evidence wouldn't be shed while disposing of the body and make it easier to retrieve the body later, should he decide it was necessary to move it. Remember Michael scrapped his car in Pendleton when it could have been repaired or sold for far greater than the price given for scrap and the dogs went instantly to the car when police went to retrieve the car after learning Michael was trying to determine if it had been crushed.
@foresttales506
@foresttales506 3 жыл бұрын
Glorindellen Yes, her body must have been wrapped very well to be able to move it later and not leave Susan’s DNA behind in Michael’s car. Charlie said that Susan went camping with them, and then stayed where the pretty crystals are. Considering all the camping gear/junk that he had in the back of the van, I’m not sure her body would have fit in the back. These details make me think she was in the front seat, though heavily sedated. Susan would not have left voluntarily on a Sunday night knowing she had to work the next day. I’m guessing that the children would have slept through much of the trip, at least until daybreak. Charlie, being a very bright child, would have likely remembered if he witnessed anything that was frightening or traumatic, IMO.
@Glorindellen
@Glorindellen 3 жыл бұрын
@@foresttales506 I think that Susan was feeling the early effects of the drugs, was woozy and nauseous and Josh told her was taking her to the emergency room, so she would cooperate with trying to get to the van. And you're right, with the generator, toboggans, and other gear, there can't have been much room for a body in the back.

Congratulations on your amazing investigative work! I'm so impressed by all the experiments you engaged in, in the pursuit of answers in this case. Makes me wonder, yet again, why law enforcement was-- and appears to continue to be-- so deficient in their own pursuit of answers and prosecution of Josh [and in two different states]. It is one of the saddest cases of domestic violence and family pathologies that I've witnessed. Perhaps it's because it's had so much coverage, and so much visual material now out in the public space. Such a shame that these crimes are not as rare as they ought to be. The only good news from this case is that Susan Cox's family won their civil suit against Washington State for negligence in allowing Josh Powell visitation with the kids in his own home. To Dave Cawley: I hope you've found good ways to cleanse all this negativity from your energy field, and that you regularly use methods to restore your inner balance. It's a heavy shroud, this type of work. Bless you for taking on the task. Take good care!
