These strategies for navigating social interactions are invaluable! I can relate so well. Sometimes the hardest criticism and negativity to deal with are those from family and friends and you did a great job of explaining that. Also your coverage of the topic of bullying is so spot on. I love "It's not the truth that hurts, but rather the realization of the lies we let ourselves believe." That's so true and something that took me a long time to learn. It's hard for me to accept the truths about myself that I don't like, but when I do now no one can use that against me and i can either just accept them or even work to improve them.

Truly helpful and inspiring commentary. It's certainly a much better approach to deal with the criticism of others with open-mindedness, positivity and empathy, which ultimately leads to better communication and personal development. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

One of humanities' traits that makes us what we are is "motive". Or in law intent. If only we could know? As you've said it just doesn't matter unless it is constructive criticism.

Great talk...i want to volunteer that whenever ive written an a$$hole type comment in the past (not on this channel) on someone's channel, it always comes from inner frustration/anger in my personal life that has nothing to do with the video or the video uploader. I don't make comments like this anymore b/c I got therapy and worked on myself. I am no longer a destructive person.

I agree. I've done that as well and when you take time before responding to other people, sometimes it's easier to recognize that your first reactions are guided by emotion and sometimes originate with your own past experience, rather than pertaining to the person you are conversing with. Happy to hear that you've taken the time to work on yourself and improve! 👍

Thanks for sharing that. I think we are all guilty of taking out our frustrations online a time or two. It's easy to forget how real the internet is, because it feels so fake.

This is awesome, thanks for putting this out there. Honestly I barely use social media and this exact topic has prevented me from making a youtube channel. My pfp is actually an entire 3D environment I made for a youtube channel but I've been hesitant about actually publishing anything cause of how terrible people can be. But, this advice was awesome and helps me think about things in a different way. Thanks again and it's cool you're not locking yourself entirely into tech topics.

Thank you so much for the kind comment! I hope you do upload your content to your KZbin channel. Even though there are plenty of nasty people out there, 90% seem to be really nice and encouraging. Let me know in a comment if you ever start uploading so I can watch your stuff. I'm glad to be making videos outside of just technology, there is just too much to talk about that I don't want to ignore.

@@JoshChristiane I can probably deal with 10% mean comments tbh, I don't hate those odds haha. I will! I'm feeling a bit motivated now so I'll just comment again here if/when I upload. Yea talk about whatever you want, a lot of youtubers I like aren't niched down and just talk about whatever. I like it, makes it more about the person rather than the topic which can be great.

@@JoshChristiane Keep up the great work! Out there, there is so much rush, and people are trying to move forward at a higher and higher pace. Your content makes a person take a pause and reflect. I think that's the best gift anyone can give to themselves. So, Thank You. 🙌🌟

Why respond to them at all? Trolls feed off of attention. If they don't get it, they move on.
@JoshChristiane
@JoshChristiane 5 ай бұрын
Well most of them it's better not to. You're completely right, some really crazy people out there. You never realize how mad some people really are until you post something popular on the internet, then it's quite shocking how insane people really can be. Probably just have nothing else better to do.

@@JoshChristiane 100%. I don't get why people troll when someone is trying to help others. People like you bring a wealth of knowledge to the community, so why try to troll them into not wanting to do it anymore? I get politics and such, but it just makes no sense on this kind of channel.
@JoshChristiane
@JoshChristiane 5 ай бұрын
Thank you, I appreciate that. It really doesn't make sense. I stay out of politics and religion entirely and still get a lot of nasty people. Sadly that's just how the tech community is, very toxic in general. I read that narcissists and psychopaths are most likely to be working in technology and other "intellectual" fields, so perhaps it just attracts those types.

I really like your stuff, but how do you have so many followers after only posting 4 videos recently?
@JoshChristiane
@JoshChristiane 7 ай бұрын
That's a really good question. Thanks for the compliment! I haven't posted very many videos in general, but I am becoming more active. 13k subs is actually very few, and when you look at my views to subscribers ratio it's on par with normal. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary. 700k views with 13k subs means I have a 1.8% view to sub rate. Around 1 to 2% is normal. So hopefully that answers your question. In terms of why people subscribe? I'm not sure. But I am actively posting content and have much more coming every week.

@@JoshChristiane Thats very interesting, thank you for sharing the details! I do also want to complement you on the fact that you seem like one of the more normal guys out there that happen to be a game developer. I put myself in that category as a husband and father of 4 that just does it for fun. It's not my entire identity, and I can tell the same goes for you. Keep up the good work!
@JoshChristiane
@JoshChristiane 7 ай бұрын
Yes, absolutely. I may run a small game company, and I love game development, but it can't be the sole reason you exist in life. Family balance is so much more important than any individual work we do in my opinion. As a father of a newborn my priority is my son, always.

Hey, here's a criticism: I think you are using a weird definition of devil's advocate. Or I'm just out of touch with its latest casual interpretation. A devil's advocate is fundamentally different from a strawman argument (using person). A strawman is basically attacking an argument you have not made, and I think it comes from the attacking party boxing you into a category they don't like. They associate that category or group with an argument they don't like and therefore attack the perceived argument while associating it with you. A devil's advocate - which I really like being, especially to my own arguments - will instead (try to) make truthful counter-argument to test whether the primary argument is solid and foolproof. I don't have to want to argue for the sake of arguing if I point out *real* flaws in your argument. Using a strawman is completely antithetical to being a devil's advocate, since you are not dealing with the original argument that you are supposed to test.
@JoshChristiane
@JoshChristiane 7 ай бұрын
Correct. They are not the same. However, I have found most people using either method should be dealt with the same way, at least when arguing for pointless reasons. Which of course would be to just ignore them. It's not always worth arguing with people, and very often people think their argument is strong when it is not. Those people I just ignore.
