Hi Josh. Well done for posting the video. It's nice you're willing to receive feedback on the content. Questioning - your questions to the pupil are occasionally loaded, ie you are presuming you know the answer. You ask her a question and then follow it up with another question with your answer attached. "What makes it a 7? Is it confidence?" When using effective questioning, our next question should ideally depend on the answer from the previous question. Not just a string of pre planned questions. With some practice you could get this pupil to open up and have more of a conversation than a quick fire question round. Active listening is an extremely important part of questioning. Listening and understanding how and what the pupil has said. You mentioned her putting her jumper on several times, and towards the end she does mention that she shakes when she is nervous! This is where you should have delved deeper into what and why she is nervous! Although client centered learning is about what the client NEEDS, not just what they want. The plan did feel like it was guided more by you then the client. When talking about roundabouts you ask who has "right of way". The term should be "priority" not right of way. The roundabouts felt like it was to much of a step for the pupil. If you are having to help her to go to first gear and to give that much detail in the talk through, maybe she wasn't quite ready for those yet! On a side note, I would advise on taking direct observations of the pupil. You are fiddling with the heating while she is moving off. Not only are you not watching her, you don't do your instructor observations before she moves off. This would be marked down on a P3 or SC under under "was the trainer aware of the surrounding and the pupils actions". It's really good to see you are trying to improve and you are moving in the correct direction. I can send you some links on how to use effective questions if you want. Keep up the good work 👍

So with regards to the question I see what your saying. I do tend to preload questions sometimes. I'll work on that. The priority instead of right of way is brilliant, I will change this in future. The roundabouts was definitely to much at that point and if I had shown the rest we did adapt the lesson to left and rights for a bit. The pulling away was a slip up focusing on filming not teaching. Thanks again and look forward to the links. 👍

Hi Josh, I know this is over a year old now but I always relate roundabouts to being another type of junction like you kind of did at 2:40 but I just just say it’s another type as I find it’s less daunting for the nervous pupils when they relate it to previous lessons. I’d also never say roundabouts are open junctions as there are plenty of mini roundabouts that are closed. Most larger roundabouts are open but a lot of minis are not, in my area at least, and it could encourage a pupil to go too fast if they are approaching a closed mini roundabout in 2nd gear.

Thanks for sharing Josh. Love your videos. This particular intro did feel somewhat instructor led. So much info from you and not much from the pupil. I've found myself doing this at times and have to make myself slow down. Too much talking from me and not enough from the pupil and like one of the previous commenters has said, she is spoon fed the answers. It almost feels like we are anxious to get the answers out so we input them in. Don't be afraid to ask the question and let the silence happen. That's the pupils thinking time. There was a big introduction for what seemed to be a relatively straight forward left turn at roundabouts with virtually no traffic on them. I'd be asking the pupil about the similarities to T junctions. How do you deal with those if you can see? What if you can't see? Keep it quite simple and short as I feel that too much will not be taken in especially if she has been guided to the answer. She looked quite disgruntled over the cardy decision.

Good video, I'm a PDI and when you mentioned the weather conditions you just stated you should keep a little bit more distance from the vehicle infront due to the rain, I'm just wondering whether you should specify more specifically how much "a little bit" is as the learner driver may not be aware

This is such great help thanks so much, I just had a question my ADI part 3 test is coming up and I'm just still unsure how to address when a pupil is for example is hesitant to enter the roundabout would I on my test talk through what happened while the pupil is still driving (of course once they have exit the roundabout to not distract them) or get them to stop somewhere safe and address while that car is stationary?

Hi Josh - using your videos to assist in my part 2. You mentioned the weather - 2 second / 4 second rule may have been a good addition......and given that roundabouts were the subject I may have included a line about the potential for diesel spills from HGV's on those roundabouts. Good video thank you

First of all, thank you for sharing this, there is not many videos like this, especially with a live student involved in the conversation. How you are supposed to do this in three minutes without sounding like an auctioneer is beyond me. All I could spot was, perhaps analyse/question the risks of looking at the gear. This should have been more of the goal for the lesson, and could have been looked at while doing left turns at roundabout. You seemed to ask her what her weaknesses were, then, brushed over them, and brought up roundabouts. You did discuss environmental risks which was great, but what about the risk associated with roundabouts, faster moving traffic, people behind expecting you to go, situations more likely to change if you take your eyes off the road to look at gears, could cause drifting in your lane etc. Another, point which seemed missing, was what the student can cope with herself. She has done left/ right turns and other junctions, so does she need full instruction with everything?. There was a brilliant amount of testing her understanding, this could have highlighted potential risks if there was gaps in her knowledge. Not a lot missed from what I can see, just needs to be a bit shorter. I would love to see more examples of this, closer to the 3 minutes.
