He's forgotten that he's no longer a Sky pundit and cannot separate this from his job. He needs to be removed as a steward in the interest of having impartial standards.

I do think this whole bias thing is getting ridiculous. BUT. Totally agree that F1 stewards should not be offering ANY opinions on drivers. Full stop. F1 Steward positions need to be fully paid professional positions. There should be a panel of say 10 srewards. The race director then nominates 2 or 3 of those Stewards for each race. Oh. And they can't be all of the same nationality. Perhaps the motor racing bodies of each nation can nominate a steward to be on the panel.

You think every other steward has no opinions on drivers, their personalities, and their styles? Fundamentally, do you disagree with his opinion you cited above? As a fan of F1, and Max, I 100% agree with what he - and almost everyone else - said. Is it wise? Possibly not - and perhaps why SKY binned him off as they were scared of monsters under the bed. Having this Herbert with the son of the founder of mcclaren as steward in Mexico handing out penalties to Max isnt plain neutral anymore especialy with all different "interpretations". I think Max comment at the press was a joke, but lets not forget british press did before grilled him in the post race interviews when he got penalties. So apparently they do choose with their feet when to show up. If Max was british and raced like brazil, be sure the room would have been full of british press. You're mainly talking about the last 3 races, but this problem has been going on for way longer. Schumacher, Vettel, Alonso, Rosberg, Verstappen, they've all been portrayed as villains in their title fights against British drivers. And let's not forget the weekend Red Bull boycotted Sky, after "Mr T" said Max couldn't win championships in a normal way and how Hamilton was robbed. You'd think they'd stand still and reflect if there is bias, but nope, there is no bias and they just keep doing what they've always been doing. And sure, Dutch media is biased, just like the Spanish, German and Italian too. But they're not the ones getting hired by the biggest F1 broadcasters like F1TV or SkySports F1. Even F1TV has had very questionable moments, especially when it comes to people like Buxton. Also, much of the blame gets redirected to social media. And while there are some incredibly unhinged people on social media, when you're a presenter or reporter you can't just say anything and expect no response. Especially when you're a steward that has openly been against a certain driver and then say you don't bring any bias into the stewarding room.

I think a lot of the fuel for the bias talk post Interlagos was that we've seen drivers in F1 immediately disqualified for entering a closed racetrack without race control's consent. We also saw Doriane Pin given an immediate 20s penalty for doing the same thing at the F1 Academy race in Jeddah earlier this season. For the FIA not to clamp down on a safety regulation like that, going against their own precedent, looks highly suspect, although I don't think it has anything to do with Herbert and Warwick being British, and everything to do with keeping the show alive, because no one is tuning into Abu Dhabi or Losail if the titles are wrapped up by then. We've seen sketchy decisions from stewards and the FIA when they want to keep the title race going, like the infamous Massa/Alonso impedance at Monza that one year.
@abel68467 күн бұрын
We should indeed give the stewards some slack, but appointing Herbert after his history of being critical about Max, especially in this stage of the season, was a bad choice by the FIA. Also, nice how you ‘forgot’ to mention that Mercedes weren’t really punished (a fine is hardly punishment!) for altering tire pressure on the grid, which is EXPLICITLY forbidden in the rules. Can you wholeheartedly say that RBR would have gotten away with ‘just’ a fine if they would have been the perpetrator?

It's shocking that he doesn't see the difference. An FIA official, let alone a steward, should not comment on the driving style and mentality of the contestants. Period. Not to mention the fact that someone who can influence the outcome of races and championships is also being paid by a betting company... how is that possible??

Another thing that bothers me is that sometimes the rules instantly come into question when they benefit Max. I'm not sure if some of these regulations have been regarded as problematic before, but here are some examples: 1. Banning the point for fastest lap after Ricciardo took a point from Lando at the Singapore GP. 2. The rules of being allowed to push someone wide when being ahead at the apex coming into question after Max uses them to his advantage at the US GP. (I agree it's a stupid rule BTW, just weird that it is that way and only got questioned after that race) 3. Media questioning the free pit-stop under the red flag after the Brazilian GP. The last one I find especially dumb if you think 10 seconds about it. Imagine if Max would NOT be allowed to change his tyres under the red flag. He would be forced to go out on his old tyres in a race that had been neutralized. After the pitstop it would put him all the way at the back of the grid. Obviously it would be way more dangerous and unfair to not change tyres under a red flag, so why question the rule?
@metalpiston12127 күн бұрын
@@Dwerg great points. Imagine waving a red flag on a dry race just before a rain starts, and then the cars need to restart on wet tracks on old slicks. I'm pretty sure this scenario is the valid reason why tyre-change under red flag was allowed in the first place.

As a proud italian living abroad, I am aware of the many things going on internationally with F1, and I have to say that, when looking at Sky Italia, I can say that yes, they do have a bit of bias. During the races, they will always have one eye pointed on Leclerc even if he is out of the points. This is though because of the italian viewers not really being interested in F1 other than because of Ferrari, and mainly Charles. That however doesn't stop them from properly reacting to the other battles. The "bias" in Italian commentators is just an extra attention to the Ferraris and how they are running, to keep the Italian spectators entertained. Many times they have even gone against Ferrari, for poor strategy or for bad misconduct, they keep it professional while sharing the passion for Ferrari. Having listened to the Spanish commentary, I can say that they do the same thing as the Italians, just with Alonso and Sainz, although they do tend to show a bit more bias when things get heated, but that is acceptable I guess. Now, the british media have way more bias than any of the ones above, going to the extremes to defend their drivers. This I guess would be just an example of a commentator doing things in the best interest of fans, but unfortunately, because the british media is the only things f1 fans in other countries are able to watch, the level of bias is unacceptable for the other parts of the world.

Same with the german broadcast. Extra attention for Hulk, before that Mick, nothing else. Also with Vettel and Schumacher. Ralf Schumacher (Sky Germany) was a bit soft on Mick if im honest, but also never backed out of giving him crap for doing an obvious mistake. That not only the same nationality, its the same FAMILY. No excuses or unneeded praise, no villainization of driver of another country/the championship rival - which is very much what the brits do at every single turn, without fail or hesitation. Fernando Alonso was highly spoken of in german TV, Räikkönen was praised, Montoya was often applauded for how rapid he was, Hamilton still gets praised, Lando was often praised this season and Verstappen over the last years too (And hes dutch; Germany has very much has a sporting rivalry with the Netherlands//all the people mentioned were Championship rivals, and partly even winners over our guys) The take here in the comments that the british media is just doing what everyone else is doing is completely ignorant and hilariously wrong. @@LiftandCoathe end of the video literally gives examples of other media being just as (if not more so) biased as British media. Imagine if Sky created an imagine of Max with devil horns-people would be foaming at the mouth-but because it’s Mexican tv with Liam Lawson nobody cares. I’m also old enough to remember Spanish media’s treatment of Hamilton when he was up against Alonso In 2007-08. La Marca once ran a headline “this is the only way he can win” after Hamilton won a race due to an Alonso grid penalty, and Spanish fans showing up in blackface to races was largely swept aside by Spanish media. More recently, you’ve have Spanish commentary saying “this will be good for Sainz” when Leclerc crashed out, and Dutch commentary calling Hamilton a “sucker” and saying “toodles” when he went off track in Baku 2021. I think we’re at the point where people are so obsessed with “British bias” and ready to get angry that they actively look for anything a British commentator says that indicates a slight preference for a British driver, but are quite happy to disregard anything from any other media. Seems a little logical I totally understand having media for a UK broadcast, be biased towards those drivers. But for international broadcasting, it should be different. As a British person, we hate the Sky coverage too. There’s bits that were good, but we’ve been begging for it to go back to channel 4 since it changed (ITV has kinda gone to shit in recent times, they had F1 in the 90’s) However, I will say that in terms of bias towards our own countrymen, we are definitely not the worst offenders. If you’re British you know how much drivers like Lewis, Button, Russell and Norris have all been slated in the press at various times. Lewis got it pretty consistently at the beginning of his career, and that isn’t mentioning how other countries media outlets sometimes talk about British drivers. I think the whole British bias thing is a little unfair, as most of the sport is centred around here it’s inevitable that we are going to be over represented. Then there’s the suspect flag calls, which for some reason are being talked about in the same conversation as stewarding. The race director controls the flags, it has nothing to do with stewarding or Herbert. Also many people neglect to mention that he isn’t the only steward and that the other stewards are also ex drivers etc. and are from many other countries. I’m sure there are some people within the sport who are biased, but the way people talk about it, it’s as if there’s some sort of pro-British agenda with everything, which is just simply untrue. Anyway, I was a Schumi fan growing up and although I don’t really support any particular driver or team, I have a soft spot Ferrari and McLaren still from those days. Thought i’d mention my allegiances before people accuse me of being on one side or the other 😅

@ Russell didn’t just win. He absolutely decimated Norris. In F2, George won by 68 points with seven wins to Lando’s one win (at the first race of the season). Norris was closer to 5th than to Russell in 1st. 😬 Also Lando finished with only seven points more than Alex Albon (who had a very unlucky season tbh). And only seventeen more points than Nyck De Vries. It was an absolutely decisive victory from George.

Been watching F1 since the 80's and I have watched it in three different languages. In my experience there's no contest, the British commentators always feel the need to put non-British drivers and teams down. They seem to always build this narrative were Senna or Shumacher or Alonso or Vettel were the antagonists. As a kid I even bought into it for a while. As an adult and with all the choices we have now, if Croft starts getting on my nerves I just switch to another language and it's cool and usually pretty objective and balanced. But not everyone can do that. I'm not saying British commentators should have no opinions or be biased, what I and sooooo many others are saying is this is a Global Sport and they are commentating to the World not just British viewers. The Spanish feed in ESPN is very good and incredibly balanced, it can be done!

I think you strictly have to distinguish between media and the stewards regarding that bias. The stewards have to be completely impartial, obviously. I'm not a conspiracy theorist and to me, I don't see any British bias there (I'm German). I just don't. Decision can be hard to take, so you always can argue one way or another, but overall they could be explained perfectly without invoking any bias. For example, in COTA, Lando was the one getting the penalty in a close situation, where many people saw Max at fault for overshooting the apex. In Mexico, I think there isn't any discussion that Max was at fault for both incidents. And in Brazil, Lando was the lucky one with a smaller than expected penalty. But the decisions weren't at all ridiculous in either direction.

I personally really hate how the FIA works since Charlie Whiting's passing. Just for laughs and giggles, during races, my dad and I are trying to come up with the most absurd ideas, what the FIA could do this time either to benefit the british drivers (or rather just Hamilton or Norris) or just anything else completely idiotic and it's not uncommon that it actually happens afterwards. (if someone wants to mention Abu Dhabi 2021, go look at all the other decisions that season, which instead tried to decide the season in favor of Hamilton.. it's pointless to have this discussion, when it's a single example against dozens or possibly even hundreds) But what I find even more infuriating than the FIA's decisions are the british media. Of course, the italian media are gonna favor Ferrari, german media are gonna favor german drivers and so on, but when there is the official F1 TV meant for a global audience, all the highlights on youtube are from the british commentary and so on, then it's simply not acceptable to have such biased commentators and "experts", like Croft, Brundle or Kravitz. Just to give an example on how ridiculously biased the british commentators are - when Vettel was winning the championship, but it was very close - I believe this was in 2012, Brundle said that the most important person wasn't Vettel, but that it was Adrian Newey, who was the main reason behind the success, even though Webber, the second redbull, wasn't even in the top 5 in the championship and Alonso, on a Ferrari, was just a few points behind Vettel, but Vettel was just way too good then (as a lifelong Ferrari fan I was gutted, but nobody can deny, that prime Vettel was insane good). But when it was Hamilton winning in all those seasons when Mercedes had both cars 20 seconds ahead of everyone else and second place in the championship had more than a 50 point gap in front of third place, all the british commentators were glazing Hamilton so hard I would cringe anytime I'd hear it. Not even mentioning their awful knowledge of the rules and many other aspects of the sport - when I compare it to my local media (Czech + Slovak), it's just insane how incomparable the insight, knowledge and overall overview is. For example now in Brazil, when the start was aborted, the british commentary simply went with what they saw and didn't even realise that there was something wrong, when Norris just went off on a yellow light, while my local commentators immediately picked up on this and explained the rules thoroughly on what happened, why it's wrong, what should've been done and what are the possible outcomes. And this is just one of many examples of the british commentators being completely clueless. Because of what I listed above, I believe that F1 should have different commentators for the global broadcast, youtube highlights and simply all the content not meant for only the british, than they have now (unless the other commentary mentioned in this video as an alternative is actually unbiased, I've never heard it) and maybe keep the current staff for TeamLH. When I paid for F1 TV for a few months, I just had to mute the commentary, because Croft, Brundle and the other guys are just insufferable, especially when I was used to the high quality local commentary and later decided to rather pay 3x the cost of F1 TV just to get back the local commentary. PS: Who remembers the Sky Sports Merry Christmas video from 2021?

British bias is not necessarily preferring your own driver. All national media do that. However, a significant portion of the British media tends to portray the opponents of British championship contenders as very evil. It happened to Schumacher, Vettel and Alonso too. The Dutch media is extremely biased towards Verstappen, but they respect a Hamilton or Norris. A part of the British press doesn't. Even in Brazil, several British journalists couldn't praise Verstappen without bringing up Mexico every time. I understand (but don't approve) "fans" doing it, but the media doing that too is a British thing and it is very annoying. As for the steward's decisions, they were kinda weird. Maybe not entirely intentional, but we know FIA wants to keep the tension. And the comments on drivers on commercial platforms are just weird. Tom Bellingham compared it to football, when a referee makes a controversial decision in a World Cup final and then sings the praises of the winning team afterward. That would never happen. It's just not professional and gives it at least the appearance of bias. Yeah, there should be paid, professional stewards, from all over the world. Comment on this video specifically: 1:30 How do you mean messed up? And lives are at stake? That is such an overexaggeration. With those runoffs there was no danger, that is why they were doing it. Yes, Max was by far most at fault. But Lando wasn't even trying to go through those corners cleanly, he braked way too late. If he had done it that the same way without Verstappen there he would have gone off too. Neither of them was racing clean. I am not blaming Lando, I admired it. You need to do that when racing Verstappen. Lando was just doing it smarter, which is why Verstappen got the penalties. That honestly impressed me, I didn't think he had it in him. But then the British press villainizes Verstappen while presenting Lando as a saint, not just after that race, but in Brazil too. That is British bias.
@Sasa-je9ki7 күн бұрын
All due respect Josh - and there's quite a lot of respect for your opinion - just dealing with it isn't the solution. It's a multi-dimensional issues and can be broken down in two big groups - media bias and steward/RD bias. Media bias is easily solveable - don't let Sky be a public worldwide broadcaster. In the last couple of weeks (from some official presenters from Balkan countries)I have learned that official accredited journalists are highly skewed and essentially there's already bias embedded into access to the paddock which then leads to situations and people like Motorsport or The Race with worldwide audience and highly skewed bias in reporting. On the officiating part it should be quite simple - if we can't get professional permanent stewards - then all stewards need to be coming from different countries and no individual with official support/history of bias to any driver/team should be allowed to be steward. The issue with stewarding is not in situations like Mexico where it's clear cut; it's in situations that are not clear cut (and we had a bunch of those in '21 and '24); Brazil is a good example. Ultimately this happened before, it happens now and just accepting it means injustice to not just drivers of today but those of tomorrow. That's all assuming - we want to have level playing field. If we are fine with some teams/individuals getting preferential treatment - then carry on. 🙂

I am still concerned about your opinion on the Red Flag after Stroll crashed in qualifying.. yes he was trying to get back to the pits.. but the FIA have footage.. they would have seen that that car was in the wall with a broken wheel.. and didn't Perez get a penalty for driving his broken Red Bull to the pits in Canada? That was a broken rear wing though so i would imagine that trying to do that with 3 wheels would have been an even harder task.. so that red flag came WAY too late.. it is not about if Max made it or not.. but rather safety.. just like the sprint race.. they were driving at racing speed... passed Nico.. who was 3 meters OUT OF THE CAR away from the race track. This didn't only look rigged.. it was unsafe. About the aborted start.. breaching this.. should not and actually.. is NOT a 5000 dollar fine... that should have been either a grid penalty... or what the regulations actually say.. A Drive Through or a straight up Stop and Go Penalty. (A stop and go is different from a normal penalty. You get let's say 10 seconds.. you have to pit and serve it within 3 laps else you will get a black flag) let alone that breaching an aborted start is worth less of a punishment than swearing. This was just a full on shit show from the FIA.

Great analysis and I agree with you in most aspects. To be honest, I still kind of feel that British Bias is the wrong word for the right thing. I get the feeling that race control is more interested to make a race/championship exciting than actually stewarding the race lately. You can argue that was the case in 2021 already when they let Lewis get away comparatively easy after causing a big crash in Silverstone when he was falling behind in the championship, or when they let Max get away with some rancid defending in Brazil and Jeddah, when the momentum was on Lewis side. And then they cherry picked which cars were allowed to unlap themselves and which weren't in the season finale to manufacture a last lap grand stand finish... Currently there are some suspicious calls happening that favour Lando because he is the main challenger, that just falls in line with what we saw 2021. Still, the RB and Max camp all gladly join the British Bias accusations, willingly ignoring that they benefitted from exactly that treatment late 2021 because the stewards seem to be part of F1s marketing team these days.
