Mhmm, sure he kidnapped Persephone, and that is wrong. But that was also because his brother Zeus gave permission. And most times, the people he screwed over or are in Tartarus were violating some laws of nature, or deserved it. The Greeks didn't like him because he was the God of the Underworld, and typically while you can offer something or sweet talk someone like Zeus, Athena, Apollo, or Hera, Hades was inexorable and once you died, there is nearly nothing you can do to avoid going to the underworld.

The manga gives more backstory to Majora through a bonus chapter as well as his true form's appearance, thought it's arguably non canon. However, the corpse of the evil Great Deku Tree seen in the Ocarina of Time manga was seen in BotW in the same general location as in the manga. So maybe only the bonus chapters of the manga (which both Majora's backstory and the evil Great Deku Tree appeared in) are canon? IDK.

@@massgunner4152 I know that they're probably non canon. But even then they're sometimes referenced in more mainstream media of that franchise but who knows? Like I said, in the Ocarina of Time manga there was a side story/bonus chapter that had young link fight an evil Great Deku Tree before the events of the game, and the corpse of said evil Deku Tree can be found in BotW as a husk in the Lost Woods. Then again, that same Manga says that Sheik is male and is a split personality from Zelda and often times heavily alters or even skips certain in-game segments (for example in the OoT manga they completely skip the water and shadow temples and have Link fight Dark Link in Kakariko village) so who knows?

Many "archenemy" villains tend to be very great and persistent while always finding a way to return somehow and someway. However sometimes the one shot like villains can do the same.

Raven Beak definitely hit me hard even though he was absent for most of Dread. That is the mark of a good villain.

yeah it definitely helped that alongside all the lore he brings with him, they introduce him as Dread's reason for Samus losing all her stuff which is probably the best reasoning a Metroid game has given so far because damn what an entrance scene.

God the wait for Dread felt like my sack was in a vice that was slowly being turned as each day passed. But the wait was well worth it. I've done several playthroughs of Dread, I even sat through Hard Mode. I'm not doing Dread Mode though. That game was well worth the wait and 60 bucks. And giving the reins for 2D Metroid to Mercury Steam was a smart decision. They know what they're doing.

Actually, Hades from Kid Icarus Uprising is like Supay, the Inca gods of the underworld, if you squint. He does bad things, but he has a genuine fascination with humans, and expresses admiration when pit is able to overcome and beat him in the end. And what he does can be seen as shining a light on the faults of the other factions, like viridi's animosity towards humanity, or Palutaina's putting humanity on a pedestal, or the constant waring of the gods feeding the cycle of death that hades uses to make his armies. It doesn't make what he does right, but Hades doesn't pretend that he isn't doing bad things. He is a bad guy who likes seeing people overcome the problems he creates and make genuine progress towards being better people. Which is still more accurate to Supay than what colonialism did to the Inca god of death and the underworld.

Even among such unfettered villains like that, what makes Majora stand out is that _it succeeds._ You’re going to see the destruction at least once no matter what you do during the first “three days”, and then it becomes a matter of gathering and retaining the means to stop it through as few “cycles” as possible. It’s terrifying how little it cares… because by that point, _you’ve seen the full effect of its indifference._

It's not even on the same level as a character like Porky Minch, who also displays childlike indifference to the amount of destruction he causes. Porky could have his ego manipulated against him, where as with Majora you can't do something like that. It truly is impossible to get inside the head of Majora...

If I had to pick a candidate from Kirby it’d have to be either Void Termina or Fecto Elfilis from Forgotten Land. For Void Termina it mainly comes from the goldmine of lore implications that point to it being Kirby’s reincarnation. For Fecto, this SCP is so unapologetically evil I love it. He’s the latest in the Kirby tradition of surprise horror villains that are sure to haunt more than a few nightmares.

Another cool part about Armstrong (that I’m pretty sure josh said in another countdown), is that the first theme with metal gear exelsus (or however you spell it) is what we assume is armstrongs goals and mindset, when in reality, it’s more of a sarcastic satirical parody of the current state of politics. And Armstrong is fighting to change that.

He's a hypocrite -- he makes many valid points, but at the end of the day, he displays everything he despises about current politics with the sole distinction being that he's capable of personally murdering anyone who disagrees with him.

Soooooo my favorite countdown artist collabs with one of artists I hold in highest regard. When I found out hubby was doing this one with Logan, I cried a little. AND I definitely cried when I heard Logan's voice on my hubby's computer. Both of them have been amazing influences on my mental health, from helping me sleep to giving me joy and peace when I needed it most, and I am so so so so happy that they worked together on this one.

The thing I find scary about Majora is how he has no soul and no emotion. He’s just a mask with dark, sinister powers and will use those powers to destroy the world. It also makes me think that the more horror there is with a villain the more theories there are about how they came to be who they are in-game.

There is one such villain from Final Fantasy XIV who would be worthy of a list such as this. Emet-Selch He was the primary villain of the Shadowbringers expansion, but he has actually dethroned Sephiroth in Japan as the most popular FF villain and for good reason. When you and Fawful's Minion get around to playing it someday, you will understand why.

After only watching the intro, my pick is Sovereign from Mass Effect. It only gets a few minutes of screen time in the entire franchise, but completely steals the show. It is, and likely always will be, THE single most memorable and intimidating character in the entire franchise, and IMO its conversation with Shepard is the single best moment in the entire series, let alone the one game it appears in.

Agreed. You think Saren was the one causing this, only to find out that he is a puppet to the real villain. Sovereign's speech will scare you, and make you think that the Reapers are this unbeatable horror that are eternal. That quote on maintaining order is still badass and scary. You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it.

I wouldn't call Sovereign a one-shot. It doesn't appear personally, but it seems to be the admiral directing the Reaper efforts. Once it shows up in ME1, you can feel its presence all the way to the end of the trilogy.

@@CoralCopperHead I disagree. Sovereign's presence disappears from the series following it's defeat. And that's largely (IMO) because the actual leader of the Reapers that shows up afterwards has a stupidly stereotypical villain voice and even more stereotypically cringey villain dialogue. Harbinger single handedly ruins almost everything cool about the Reapers that Sovereign set up by coming across like it's just an evil a-hole that enjoys causing suffering, instead of Sovereign, which came across as an ancient unfathomable being who's motives and origins are likely impossible for an organic being to comprehend. Sovereign felt like a Lovecraftian horror, while Harbinger felt like a Saturday morning cartoon villain, and Harbinger tainted the rest of the Reapers by essentially being their voice from ME2 onwards. The random Reaper Shepard kills on Rannoch was more compelling than Harbinger ever was, that's how bad it was, and how bad it made the Reaper feel. I even suspect that Harbinger's failings is one of the main reasons Cerberus practically upstages the Reapers as the villains in ME3, because Harbinger made the Reapers look so bad, that it couldn't be given a lot of screen time as the main villain and be taken seriously. Besides, even if it's influence is felt throughout the series, Sovereign itself is still only in ME1, and plays no direct role in the series beyond that one game, even if it was part of the major group of villains in the trilogy. So it's still a one shot villain either way IMO.

The real tragedy of senator armstrong is his goals are sound and understandable and even to plenty of people like myself something they'd want to suport but his methods are incredibly fucked up and wrong hence why Raiden has to stop him like the song says I carved my own path you followed your wrath but maybe were both the same. The funny thing about Raven Beak, it _confirms_ that the Prequel Manga _is canon_ for the series! Well, more or less. Also, it gave Samus (and Metroids) _a significant power boost. Remember, she _outright drained_ a Chozo ship, as in 'drained the ship completely, despite the fact that it is using whatever BS that the Chozo use for a power source' powerful. 😬 Also, they made her basically Doom Lady... ... and Hades in actual Greek Myth is basically the most mild mannored _divine_ in the Greek Patheon... as long as it doesn't involve things like betraying the Rules of Hospitality, tricking yourself from death for a time, or trying to kidnap his lovecraftian wife... unlike the _rest_ of his bothers and sisters who are the epitome of horrible people in power...

I would've put Mephiles as the Sonic representative. I mean, he's the most evil and most terrifying villain in all of Sonic. He's a schemer and manipulator that bends the truth to his will in the most convincing way possible, and when he fights, he's ruthless and merciless towards everyone. Not to mention, his first design is creepy, and his crystal design is terrifying. And the cherry on top, he's the only villain in the entire franchise that actually killed Sonic. No one else, not even Eggman, can claim that. Sure, his plan's convoluted, but everything else is too good. Merlina's great as a twist villain and provides a philosophical message for sure, but comparing her to the demented terror that is Mephiles, it's no contest for me. Though I'm sure Josh won't talk about him because he's one of MANY people on KZbin who refuses to shut up about 06.

The funny thing is that people think it was stupid of him to waste so much of his time when, if the end goal was to kill Sonic and make Elise cry, why didn't he just kill her and get it over with? Because...he WANTED her and EVERYONE tangentially related to her to suffer! It WOULD have been smart, yes, but...well...where's the fun in that? He was clearly reveling in everyone's abject misery, and that's PRECISELY what he wanted! He didn't JUST want to be united with Iblis to become the reality-shattering deity of Solaris...he wanted EVERYONE to know the PAIN he was subjected to when humanity abused his power for their own selfish gains. I'm just saying...when EGGMAN of all people is running scared shitless from this MONSTER being released from his prison, there's DAMN good reason to be scared! O.O

Personal honorable mention : Miitopia's Dark Curse The former was practically shunned by everyone and everything to the point of overwhelming loneliness, and decided to cast his own face off because of it. Whatever was left before his body faded into obscurity became the Dark Curse, a soul of pure hatred, malice and envy whose one main purpose in life is to feast off the energy of a Mii host and use its new body to steal faces of Miis and slap them onto monsters, practically turning the Miis into nobodies, like he once was. Oh, and another thing, throughout the Sky Scraper level you get some exposition from the ex Dark Lord about just how terrifyingly powerful the Dark Curse can be if left to its own devices, stating that whenever the Dark Lord steals a face, the Mii that owned that face can see their actions through the body of the monster but can't do jack shit about it, like some sort of twisted little mental cage where your mind is intact but your body has been controlled by someone else. Same rules apply for the Dark Curse's hosts. For a fanfic simulator disguised as an RPG, Shinya Kumazaki writing is probably one of the last things you could expect for a Mii game lol

Fascinating, one-shot villains in video games aren't something I would think of, especially from video games. I always loved the story of the Mario RPGs and how the villains and antagonists add to the plot. One thing, though, is how I feel confused about Hades being likeable, but I am willing to learn and don't mind learning something new.

Some honorable mentions from me: The Boss: the mother of CQC and Big Boss's mentor. At first, you would hate her for betraying Jack and the United States during the Cold War, but when you learn more about her and the ending, it's heartbreaking to see how patriotic she was, and how her government screwed her over. Plus, she is badass enough to beat Big Boss a couple of times and intimidate a sociopathic Russian colonel who can shoot lightning from his hands. You got to respect how even Volgin was intimidated by her. Volo: You think he is a friend, up until the ending where he talks about remaking the universe and he was done better than Rose or Lusamine. His team was also difficult, especially since you have to fight Giratina twice, all without getting a break. Frank Horrigan: One of the most dangerous Fallout villains. He is also the only villain in Fallout IIRC that can't be convinced to not fight you. (if villains based off real life people count) Stalin: When Red Alert started, it was dark. The very first cutscene of the Soviet campaign was Stalin and his advisors talking about the gas used on people who went against him. Aside from a few details, Stalin in Red Alert 1 was very close to his real life self, a paranoid, brutal dictator. Although you don't actually fight him, he dies either to Stavros or by Nadia and Kane, so I don't exactly know if you would count him as a villain in the sense of you fight him.

If real villains that appear in games count, then yeah, Stalin definitely counts as a villain. You don't need to fight them personally, they just need to be the driving force that opposes you, facing their armies is tantamount to facing them. You could consider the armies their weapons, just like a fencer's sword.

@@CoralCopperHead got it. I will still consider Red Alert's Stalin to be a great one-shot villain considering how accurate he is to the real life version of himself. While Romanov and Cherdenko are more funny, they can't beat the intimidation and horror that Stalin presented.

Honestly, this is one of the reasons why Majora is my favorite Zelda villain by a significant margin. Other villains are evil, downright diabolical in some cases, but not a single one of them feels as terrifying a villain as Majora is. It has a Lovecraftian level of callousness, and a nearly as fitting level of power to back it up. Others want conquest, to revive their master, to rule the world, etc. Majora wanted to make the world fall into despair before sending careening into oblivion. An agonizing annihilation, and it comes within a hair's breadth of succeeding. Even with the best outcome, we don't reverse ALL of the damage it does, just most of it. I could go on, but I think I got my point across.

One off villains/antagonists are kinda my favorite thing. Sure it sucks we don't see them cause problems again, but when you think about it they don't have a reason anymore because it's either A. They permanently got killed and thus can't return unless they become a zombified version of themselves (example, Kirby's Extra Modes and True Arenas) or can only become hollow shells that don't have the same charm as before. Or B. They did survive but they realized that if they tried again it wouldn't get anywhere because the one who stopped them would just do it again but at a quicker pace or they can't try again because what they were looking for either got destroyed or erased from existence and trying to recreate it would take longer than just doing something else. For Sonic fans, seeing one off villain/antagonists like Merlina, Mephiles or even Erazor Djinn again was like it was a dream. Be it playable or not. Those who played Sonic Runners before it shutdown should know what I mean. For Kirby fans, being able to finally play as some of Kirby's iconic baddies like Marx, the Squeaks, Dark Meta Knight, Magolor, Susie and even the Three Mage Sisters was a literal dream come true because they looked so cool initially and could do stuff Kirby couldn't do without a copy ability. Even Touhou fans rejoice at seeing their favorite adorable, cute youkai return to the main series after being left to the print works for who knows how long. Like I said before, while yes it would be nice that some characters made a grand return in the antagonist/villain spotlight, I'd rather they just stay with the fans. It makes it easier for new fans to get curious when a antagonist that hasn't been seen in years makes a surprise return to the series.

One that stuck out to me was the Aparoids from Star Fox Assault. In a series that likes to recycle the same plot for most of their games, we get a new antagonistic threat that's a parasitic hive mind of invaders that one-shot the guy that's built up as the main threat in the first level. They then spend the game showing shades of their power by possessing machines and organic life, sometimes FUSING them in the case of one Pigma Dengar, and in some cases their victim is AWARE, and PLEADING for death like in the boss fight against a very-reluctant General Pepper, and that's to say nothing of the possessed Cornerian foot soldiers that you are clearly killing during the Corneria level. The Aparaoids are a great idea for a villain force in concept that unfortunately is likely never going to get referenced again...

A few more mentions: 1. Zoran Lazarevic, Uncharted 2 - definitely the best qualified for love-to-hate. He’s ruthless, barbaric, and he seeks out ridiculous power. I mean, the guy praised Stalin and Hitler. Does that not say enough? 2. Kronika, MK11 - the typical type of a manipulative tyrant. All those who worked with her were promised something. She obviously couldn’t keep every single promise. Cheap boss fight, but masterful villainess. Hopefully she won’t be cheapened by a sequel, like Onaga and Shinnok. 3. Arkham, Devil May Cry 3 - the guy faked his own death, manipulated his daughter’s emotions, turned her against Dante and Virgil, and then turned on her, all for pursuit of power. 4. The rattlers, The Last of Us part 2 - this group has no redeeming quality. They torture and enslave civilians, plus experiment on them with infected. Thankfully, they get taken down by the prisoners that Ellie released. 5. The Eagle, Ghost of Tsushima - for a DLC villainess, she’s very well-crafted. She manipulates her victims with a special poison to either commit suicide or join her. Her constant attempts to do the same to Jin are pretty creepy.

Honorable Mentions: *Rafe Adler - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End -The best villain in the franchise, Uncharted has come a long was since the villains in the first game. *The Pirate Master - Shantae and The Pirate's Curse -The former master of Risky Boots, his skull was integrated into Risky's outfit. *Emporer Nefarious - Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart -What if Dr. Nefarious was successful in his evil plans? Rift Apart answers that question with a Nefarious from an alternate universe. *Count Vulga- Er I mean, Count Vegar - Jak 3 -The standout villain of the franchise. And hatable for all the right reasons *Lumine - Megaman X8 -You thought the final boss would be Sigma, but it was him, Lumine!

How about a top ten of protagonist evil counterparts. Like, Link and Dark Link, the variations of evil Mario's to the original. Hell a great one is Luke and Ash from Tales of Abyss. I'll go ahead and a few if they count: Dark Samus and Sa-X: both are a major threats of their own species to stop or kill Samus in order to attack the galaxy. Metal Sonic: one of Dr.Eggmans successful machines that's an actual threat to Sonic. The antagonist of Metal Gear: I won't spoil anything for Metal Gear, but let's just say the allies you have may not be telling the truth.

How about Dart and Zieg from Legend of Dragoon? Father and son, both wielders of the Red-Eyed Dragoon Spirit, with Zieg being the original, and capable of using the same Dragoon Spells and attacks that you did when you, Dart, once held it before it was taken back by the original wielder.

Oh, Luca Blight as an Honorable mention! And really... WELL DESERVED! Compared to Barbarossa Rugner from the original, Luca Blight is basically Suikoden's Vaas... EXCEPT ABSOLUTELY UNFETTERED. Surprise attack that killed the squad the main character and his friend Jowy were part of? A village getting DESTROYED, along with seeing Luca ask an INNOCENT VILLAGER to act like a pig, then KILL HER, laughing like the Joker?! The fact that this ONE GUY requires MULTIPLE TEAMS OF WELL-TRAINED ALLIES (SERIOUSLY, before fighting Luca Blight... Pick your best characters and GRIND THEIR LEVELS.) to basically render him NEAR DEATH?! Luca is a PURE MONSTER.

Glad to see the other Mario RPG villains getting talked about, I could gush about them for days (except for Grodus, I find him boring as FUCK.) Personally, I want to mention King Olly, even if it's for one unique reason, HIS MOTIVE. While most Mario villains target the princess or the general world (and to be fair, Olly does that too,) I find his specific hatred of the Toads to be something that comes off as unique for the series.

One detail I like about number 2 on this list is when the hero seems to agree with them, they are elated that they got through to their enemy. They pick the protagonist up, give a nice dusting while reaffirming their goal, and even embrace their new tired ally with a smile. Then they get shocked when it's quickly revealed that their supposed new buddy lied, and the fight isn't over.

Asriel's death didn't spark the Monster/Human war, that was what lead to them being sealed in by the Barrier. What it did was make Asgore go from having hope for peace and resolution to declaring war on humanity, which he regretted very soon after. Edit: ah, someone beat me to it😅

Handsome jack from borderlands 2. He was a Hyperion coder who locked his siren daughter up in the Hyperion network after she accidentally killed his mom, he killed tassider(the late president of Hyperion) and the entire claptrap line. He then proceeds to use the vault hunter from the first game to kill the destroyer so he can use its eye. He then proceeds to lure would be vault hunters to their doom. After killing angel in the sequel he killed Roland and kidnapped Lilith to power up the vault key. Plus dude is hilarious

A video team-up with Fawful's Minion, yes plz. Glad to see the usual representation of Merlina, Hades, Flowey, and Armstrong show up. My favorite Mario RPG one-shot baddie has to be Dementio. I enjoy how his silly appearance and wordplays help to mask just how much of a chessmaster he truly is. As for my other favorites outside Mario, I would choose Star Dream, Constable Neyla, and the Aparoids.

To be honest, I kind of expected him to be on this list, even though I know he technically appears more than once in the Pokemon franchise. With the Merlina entry, this is why I love Sonic as a character. Like, yeah, his whole shtick is "Gotta go fast", and he's snarky, confident, and even a little arrogant sometimes, but he's also wise and philosophical, as displayed in Adventure, Black Knight, and Frontiers. Merlina presents an antithesis to Sonic. While Sonic wants to live life to the fullest in the time he has, Merlina would rather the story never ended.

Great List! Just thinking now, considering the games I've played, Taranza might be on my list (I'm not counting that alternate Taranza from that Kirby spinoff). Return to Dreamland may have started the disturbing/tragic lore trend, but triple deluxe gave the trend rocket boosters. The game really implies that Taranza innocently got his crush a gift, that lead to the tyrannical subjugation of an entire kingdom for years before Kirby came along. Taranza is forced to help slay Sectonia, and the Japanese even suggests in the Trure Arena that in a moment of sanity, Sectonia wanted death as well. Jimminy Crickets HAL. Also, P.S....the war long happened before Asriel's death. Just wanted to throw that out there.
