To be fair though where Sonic Team is concerned regarding Boom, they had very little if anything to do with the game besides green lighting the designs. From what I remember it was ultimately Sega of Japan forcing Sega of America and Big Red Button to make the game for the Wii U when they planned it for PC and the then next gen consoles just to get out of the Wii U exclusivity contract faster. This caused the developers to scrap a lot of content that was planned just to make the strict deadline. So Sega of Japan repeated their mistake from 06. Iizuka had to pretty much fight the Japan branch just to allow Mania to be greenlit. Given the success of Mania and the lukewarm at best reception to Forces, Sega of Japan after those games’ release decided to move Iizuka to America and let him and the American division have control of how Sonic will be in the future making Forces so far the last time the Japan branch has creative control of the franchise. Even Frontiers coming out is based on what people were giving Sega of America in a survey that came out after Forces. Ian Flynn writing the story and open world gameplay were very common in the surveys, both of which are now happening with Frontiers. I hope for the best with Frontiers and maybe please Sega if it works just keep that style of gameplay and just refine it for future games!

So what you’re saying is we in America now have full control over Sonic and Japan has basicaly abandoned him?

@SonicXAmy121Gamer2 жыл бұрын
@@zigslotheon JP hasn't abandoned him per say, they still view the franchise as a cash cow. They're just letting the market that actually buys Sonic games have creative control with Iizuka, who worked at both NA and JP Sega, serve as a bridge between the two divisions since he got promoted from head of Sonic Team to head of the franchise as a whole with his move back to America while still serving as head of Sonic Team currently.

@@Kingdom850 I'll admit it was stupid to not make a Mania sequel, but Mania's namesake was that it was to represent how it was made by fans and serves as an anniversary game. So spiritual successor to Mania would be more fitting than a sequel. Headcannon is working on Origins making the 3&K port in the game using Christian's Retro Engine, with mission mode being handled by Sega internally as confirmed by Stealth himself. Aaron Webber before he left for Sega JP did confirm that Sega wasn't done with the Mania devs, so there is hope of them making a wholly original game in Mania's style.

I think it's mostly the disillusionment. In 2008, people think "BioWare RPG with Sonic characters," they think of Baldur's Gate, NWN, KOTOR, Jade Empire, and the first Mass Effect (this was 2008, so Dragon Age was on the horizon but not here yet), and they get all kinds of excited. I kinda wish we got the chance to at least see where it was going. Funnily enough, if we were judging the games on story alone, I think my favourite would have to be The Black Knight. Something about that game's themes has never left me, moreso than any other Sonic game.

Currently playing Generations. One thing to note is that the sense of speed isn't always about literal movement. What paths you take in a stage, how much distance through the level they take over others, the time you have to pick, choose and react to each of them as they come. It all has to be finely tuned. Which is why Generations and Mania deserved their spots. They have that sense of speed in spades.

One of my favorite things about the series has always been replaying the games. I like to think of myself as a honer, so opportunities to improve my gameplay or discover new ways to interact with the level design are my favorite parts of a lot of sonic games. I feel like the Adventure era titles, especially SA2 and after really hit that sweet spot while some of the older and newer titles are more hit or miss for me. That said, I feel like a lot of the modern titles (Colors and Generations more specifically) are extremely overrated. They just don't have any side modes that I find interesting, the level design doesn't offer much replayability outside of collectibles, and the simplified ranking systems make score attacking functionally the same as time attacking. All that said, I can see why you and so many others love this era. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have fond memories of all these games (save for Colors), I just never felt the urge to 100% or replay them. Ironically, I got closer to 100% in Lost World than any of the modern titles.

Some of my favorite games from Sonic are Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the adventure titles, Heroes, Shadow, both Rush and Rush Adventure, Unleased, Colors, Generations, and Mania. 10. I treat this game the same way as Pokemon Yellow and the original Legend of Zelda. I wouldn't replay them, but I do appreciate them as a good starting point. 9. I see why people would consider Advance 2 to be the best of the GBA platforming titles. It's loads of fun and the introduction to Cream the Rabbit was neat. 8. How bold of you to put Adventure 2 at not even the top 5. I do get the main issues with it, but the game has some excellent highs as you said and it was also a big part of my childhood. 7. I still consider Sonic Heroes to be a great game. The four teams were fun, the levels and music were great, and the story was pretty cool. I have heard of the whole Metallix comic storyline, but I haven't read it. I did enjoy some of the games in the dark ages like Shadow the Hedgehog, the storybook games, and Sonic Unleashed. 6. Again, bold move to have an adventure title and not even crack the top 5. This was my introduction to Sonic along with Adventure 2 and I hold both games in fond memories. The overworld was fun and the gameplay was amazing, fishing simulation notwithstanding. 5. Both Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure were very fun titles for the Nintendo DS. The gameplay was amazing and the introduction to Blaze the Cat was very welcomed. 4. It's not surprising as to why many people hold Sonic Colors in high regard. It is loads of fun and it feels simple, yet enjoyable. I personally love Sonic Unleashed a bit more than Colors. Also, I really did love the Werehog beat-em-up levels and they were very fun, don't @ me. 3. Sonic 3 & Knuckles really is Sega's magnum opus of sonic genesis titles and it's no surprise here. As for Sonic 3D Blast, the genesis soundtrack was amazing and that's all there is to it. 2. I remember being hyped about Generations and it did not disappoint me at all. It was amazing to go through all of the memorable stages in both 2D and 3D. I get the complaint that it's reusing old levels, but it's celebrating Sonic's 20th anniversary. I can let that slide. Time Eater does suck in the console version, but I heard it was amazing on the 3DS. 1. What is there that hasn't been said about Sonic Mania for its success? It is simply excellent as a love letter to classic sonic and an amazing game all-around. As for my thoughts on Sonic Forces, it's a fine game. I just see it as missed potential. Here is to hoping that Sonic Frontiers brings Sonic out of his gaming funk.

As well as the Excaliber form and Darkspine form making their appearances for the first (and like Werehog and Hyper, last) times, placing each well-known character into parts of the story, and the best part? I’m definitely glad to see you put Sonic Colors on this list, and especially in the top five, since it’s gotten a bit of flack online in recent years for reasons that I think have been both understandable and unwarranted (the latter being the absolutely batshiet insane idea that Forces is better.) And while I’ll admit it isn’t perfect, as some levels are pretty gimmicky and or/short and it focuses too heavily on the 2D (albeit due to the Wii’s limitations), it’s my favorite modern/3D Sonic game solely because it’s the most consistently. There aren’t gimmicks and/or alternate playstyles that bring down the pacing to a crawl like in Unleashed and the Adventure games, forced side-missions that are basically required to progress like in Generations and (again) Unleashed, and the latter levels don’t feel like a big dip in quality like in (once more) Unleashed, the Adventure games and even Generations. Which has a crappy version of Planet Wisp that’s nowhere near as fun as the game it hails from. But Sonic Team decided to go back to basics with Colors and focused purely on Sonic gameplay, and instead of different characters we instead had separate power-ups that give Sonic unique albeit limited abilities. Some don’t like this approach, but it facilitates the platforming and makes it so what’d be an otherwise average level a lot more fun and ingenious due to the Wisps being designed around the game. Instead of just being artificially slapped into it like in Lost World and Forces. Both this and the more lighthearted and juvenile nature basically go entirely against the darker and more grounded writing of the “Dark Age” Sonic games. But given the mixed reception of Black Knight and Unleashed and especially the negative reception of Sonic ‘06, I feel like Colors was the best approach Sega could take to rekindle the series and reinstate people’s faith in Sonic. And it actually worked! At least for a time, since both this and Generations were some of the most well-received Sonic games at that point by fans and critics alike. And while Colors has its flaws, no matter what Sonic Twitter says about it, it’ll always remain my favorite game, as well as one near and dear to my heart. (Of course, this’s not going into its buggy and botched remaster released last year…but at the very least, it’s post-release patches did largely improve the game. Even if I still wish it was a stable game at launch and that this isn’t indicative of how Sega will treat Sonic in the future. Especially with the upcoming Sonic Frontiers.)

@@blekksverd The story is great and the gameplay is suprisingly fun, even with forced motion controls. Sonic is at his absolute best personality wise in this game. It was the last game that Crush 40 contributed to, composing FOUR songs for it. With Me is honestly the best Sonic final boss theme, (better than Solaris Phase 2 and Live and Learn believe it or not) and Fight the Knight and Through the Fire are also absolute bangers. It was also the last Sonic game to have vocal themes in gameplay as Sonic Colors and onwards used the Sonic Unleashed style of having MAYBE a singular vocal theme for the opening and then have the final boss use an ocastrated version of that theme with no other vocal themes in sight. It is SO MUCH better than Secret Rings in basically every aspect, despite running on the same engine. If you can emulate it I recommend you do so, though Dolphin doesn't tend to work the best on weaker hardware so you'll need a good PC to do so. Then you can play the game fully with a controller and it makes the already amazing game even better since you no longer have to waggle uncontrollably.

"Most characters punch first, ask questions later. Meanwhile she takes the time to stop and ask WHY you are fighting. She has played a large part in turning Shadow, Gamma, and Silver over to the good guy side" 1: She's the main person that does things without thinking. Like somehow showing up on Prison Island and getting all up on Shadow in a situation where she should have ZERO trouble telling he's not Sonic. Or doing the same thing to Silver and dragging him on a goose chase in the desert, wasting his time because she "feels" Sonic is there (which he was, but that doesn't change the fact that he wasn't by the time they got there). Or overreacting to Sonic's mention of a "cat girl" and going straight into Yandere mode. 2: First of all, Silver wasn't changed by her. At most, she gave Sonic time to escape, only for Silver to continue his quest to kill Sonic and have another run in with him at Radical Train. It was SHADOW who helped Silver realize the truth, turning him away from Mephiles so he could help Sonic later at Kingdom Valley. 2nd, Gamma aside, those instances of turning characters are bad writing. Amy LITERALLY says that she'd choose Sonic over the world even under the circumstance that he destroyed it as Silver claim, completely ruining her character and showing the writers don't understand why she liked Sonic in the first place. And in Shadow's case, she just so happens to say the EXACT words Maria said to help, spontaneously causing him to have a flashback to Maria's final moments and what she really wanted, instantly changing sides after setting up the Colony Crash plot with no struggle of any kind. That is what we call a Deus ex Machina or an asspull. Something utterly contrived and senseless done for the sake of the plot. What are the odds that she'd just so happen to say the EXACT words Maria said to him 50 years ago? At least in Gamma's case, it was less about what she said and what she did (defending the bird just because it was the right thing to do). Here expects me to by this HIGHLY unlikely chance of Amy saying a specific string of words going on very little knowledge of Maria, Shadow, and their past together.

When you get Emerald 1, the game re-checks the locations of Emerald 2 and 3, and if they're too close to Emerald 1, IT MOVES THEM AWAY! The same for Emerald 2, it moves Emerald 3 farther away from both Emerald 1 and 2's spot!*

That Ken Penders burn, though. 10. Hard as heck, but worth beating. 9. I... need to play these for myself. 8. The story is weaker than SA1, but I've found the gameplay more enjoyable (for the most part, anyway). 7. See #9. 6. Big aside, this was the series' first attempt at doing some serious storytelling and it was great! Too bad the animation and some of the voice acting hasn't aged well. 5. Again, see #9. There are too many great Sonic titles I haven't gotten to yet. 4. While it can be gimmicky at times and the in-story dialogue is often cringeworthy ("Badly Nosehair", anyone?), this is probably one of the best modern Sonic games out there. 3. Another great title that I haven't gotten to yet. Hopefully, Sonic Origins will give me that chance. 2. While it's short and the story is a little messy, gameplay-wise, we've got a perfect love letter to the franchise. 1. Agree wholeheartedly!
@JCBro-yg8vd2 жыл бұрын
10. A good start but definitely has a case of "Early Installment Weirdness". 9. Vaguely remember playing it as a kid. Would love to revisit it either on its own or as part of a collection. 8. Yeah, fan perception of this game has been seriously warped: Projared's review puts it best in how raising the chaos makes us selectively replay only the good parts and ignore the bad or mediocre parts. Plus, the story's got its fair share of plot holes. 7. Heroes itself was going to have a sequel, but the PS2 port was a disaster that killed any possibility of that happening. Plus, for a story that was supposed to be geared toward newcomers, Metal Sonic's presence probably confused a lot of people back in the day. If only you didn't have to reply the same story four times (including the bad Chaotix missions) and beat the broken special stages to get the final story. If the whole game had as much love and polish as the final story did, it would've been much better. 6. I'd argue this was 3D Sonic at its best in story telling. Everyone had a role to play in the narrative, not just Sonic and Eggman. And everyone underwent character development, including Tails and Amy. Big was shoehorned in, though, and just so they could try to sell you a special controller just for fishing. Cut Big out and make Amy's stages less of a slog to get through and the game would be nearly perfect. 5. Played the sequel on the DS, haven't played this first installment. It's too bad it's the last time we have multiple stories in a Sonic game. 4. Good gameplay, but the story doesn't take itself seriously. And the less said about the disatorous port/remake it got last year, the better. Still, this was a step back in the right direction. 3. The peak of classic Sonic. And yeah, let's just pretend 3D Blast never happened. 2. Obviously rushed out to meet the anniversary deadline, but it managed to still be good despite that. It's the last time Sega actually cared about making a good Sonic game. 1. It's sad when a fan made game is better than the official game released the same year. Sega should be taking notes.

Not a bad list. My only gripes with it are how the description you give for Colours sounds like it's straight from 2010. The game is not like the day stages in Unleashed at all, it's not even close. I'm with you Josh on enjoying Modern Sonic titles vs. the classics. Simple reason, I did not own a Gensis and thus only got to play Sonic games sparingly at the homes of my friends who owned a Gensis and Sonic games. My first Sega console, was their last, the Dreamcast (which I still own), and Sonic Adventure was my first proper Sonic game I got to play when it was new and learned from top to bottom. Another tidbit is due to not owning a Gensis, my other avenue to enjoying Sonic was the comics and cartoons, which I am a bigger fan of THOSE spin-off media (specifically the old Archie-Sonic books, and Sonic SatAM (I do like AOSTH, and Underground but SatAM still rules above all) than the games themselves especially as Sega has continued to go downhill with the quality of the series. That said I do enjoy a game here and there, and find the attempts at a bigger, ensemble narrative to be my favorite Sonic titles. That said I don't hate the classics and enjoy playing them from time to time; but I do not wish Sega to STRICTLY stay in the past. Their main issue is Sega's inability to let the franchise grow and their insane micro-managing of Sonic Team and any other devs that touch the franchise. Combine that with Sega's utterly DUMB business moves involving Sonic... poor Hedgehog has a bad cast of bad custodian. It's a miracle when he does get a win like the live-action movies have been hits, and much needed wins for Sonic.

Yeah, I was surprised to see an RPG Maker reference too. Also agree that a lot of bad RPG Maker games did come out. Trying to make sure the one I'm creating doesn't fall under that list.
@krimsonkatt2 жыл бұрын
@@DarkFrozenDepths Yeah like around 80% of RPG Maker games are trash since most of them are made by inexperienced devs. Even the "official" ones are mostly garbage like the licensed Shield Hero and Konosuba RPGs and the demo games for MZ. And if not that most of them are pretty similar. They're either a sad/scary puzzle game, a 100+ hour generic RPG using the same assets and battle system, or a trash meme game only made as a joke. It gets really tiring once you play enough of them. But the engine holds amazing potential and is extremely accessible, which is both it's greatest strength and weakness. Honestly, I view RPG Maker games as a whole to be a lot like mods for Super Mario 64 or Doom. They all have the same or similar basic building blocks and mechanics, but each individual project does something unique with them. Hopefully you're project ends up successful, and hopefully I can finish my game soon enough. I've been working on the same project since December 2019! 3 and 1/2 years! Crazy! Edit: By the way I don't hate the engine or the games made in it. RPG Maker has created some amazing games, including games that only or mainly use the default assets. It's just that a lot of RPG Maker games are very same-y once you play enough of them, which can easily lead to burnout if that's all you play. Personally, I'm not a fan of playing RM games since most of them I've played were bad, but I love creating my own and seeing others enjoy them.

I'll be honest, I'm surprised to see that on the script, so I just put that together in like an hour time lol. I too used to make games on it a lot that I never release, but I kinda lost interest when I realise so many of the cool custom scripts are not only licensed, but are also no longer supported by its creators. So unless you're a hardcore ruby coder, you're not gonna get much longevity out of fully utilizing RPG Maker.

I recently replayed the first one and I had a lot of fun when I put the "going fast" stuff aside and just treated it as a platformer. I've always thought people misinterpreted these games as being all about pure speed. The Geek Critique has a great video on that, but I'll just sum it up as the speed needing to be earned. 4:04 She is a BABY! For Mania the lack of originality came with an immense feeling of redundancy, especially after Generations, Sonic 4, and Sonic Advance before it all catering to classic nostalgia, and then Forces doing it again after.

I'll be honest, I unapologetically love Sonic Unleashed, night stages and all. I'm a bit biased because it was my first Sonic game ever played. For me, it set the ground work for what I believed a Sonic game should be. A serious game with light hearted moments. Chip had good chemistry with Sonic, he always got a chuckle out of me, and I was sad when I had to see him go. Plus, the night stages offered something new to the franchise, from how the battle system worked to the _absolutely delicious_ jazz segments that played while you beat creatures up. And that Night Boss music, heavenly. If I were to complain about one thing regarding the night stages, it was that the Wii version had weird and hard to control... well, controls. (It took me the entirety of the game to figure out how dashing works) The Day Stages, even though I preferred the Night Stages, taught me exactly how fast Sonic should be, and it was incredible to zip around stages with the wind to my back. It was exhilarating. I know the game had mixed reviews and the Night stages weren't for everyone. But it will always be my top favorite for teachings me exactly what Sonic was all about.

Hot take: I actually enjoy how sporadic the series has been from game to game. While the criticisms aren’t exactly wrong, I find the different ideas introduced in each new game these days generally interesting and refreshing. People will say Mario’s stable comfort zone is preferred over Sonic doing something new each game; I say it keeps the two series distinct, and ensures there’s a place for both. That said…Sonic Forces. Still sort of applies to what I like with the new ideas, but all of those ideas went to the OC stages. Everything else was either forgettable with Modern, or just bad with Classic. And the story.

Yep, this list mirrors my own. Honestly the only things I do like about Lost World is just some of the new ways to attack, the Super Homing Attack and the Sonic Boom Kick or Homing Kick moves, I kinda loved the Parkour system too, but yeah, they were copying the Mario Galaxy series way too damn much with the level design and the Deadly Six are just overglorified Koopalings.

Technically, Sonic Mania isn't a fan game. I mean... it is a game made by fans, but that's because Sonic Team specifically hired them to make Sonic Mania. So, I guess it's a fan game that SEGA and Sonic Team themselves commissioned. I just don't think something qualifies as a fan game if it's officially released. In fact, the story line of Sonic Mania even ties in with the story line of Sonic Forces. I suppose by comparing the two, it proves that the fans know what the fans want. I would totally be behind a Sonic Mania 2. In fact, you could technically argue that Sonic Mania 2 does already exist in the form of the DLC. So I guess I'd totally be behind a Sonic Mania 3... or is Sonic Origins basically Sonic Mania 3? What I'm trying to say is that Sonic Mania should actually be a series. Also, am I in a minority of people who think Sonic Forces wasn't bad? I mean, I suppose I could say that they had the right idea, but didn't implement it well. And the Classic Sonic stages weren't that good. And honestly, I think they should've done what they originally planned and went with the third character being the version of Sonic from Sonic Boom (that was the original idea, right?) instead of the OC. Granted, I'm not against the OC idea. It just don't really fit.

I think under better circumstances, Sonic Chronicles could have been great. Admittedly, it's not the best, but I still come back to it from time-to-time. This is one list I can agree on ENTIRELY. Now personally for the top 3, I think that each of them is equally good. Number 1, the level design isn't downright bullcrap or just all over the place. Number 2, which follows number 1, the level design allows you to blaze through the levels. After all, we are talking about Sonic. You know a series where you go fast. Not explore every nook and cranny of each level like you do in Sonic 2 for example. Number 3, the special stages are fantastic as the concept of the special stages are great, but the design of each level is not bullcrap. Like the special stages in Sonic 2 where the concept is great on its own. But the design is the thing that sucks even with years of experiencing the levels. Also I honestly prefer Sonic 2 special stages over 1. At least I have control at all. I really could go on forever. But I will say without hesitation that Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania are the best Sonic games of all time.

Shadow the Hedgehog, the game, addressed that issue from Sonic Adventure 2. I was halfway expecting a fifth Sonic list, since there are five Mondays this month (I was thinking it would be best Stage Music). But what a way to go out! My only complaint to add to Sonic Generations is that I wish there were additional stages, if only as DLC. I would have LOVED to play through both 2D and 3D versions of the Ice Cap Zone, for example, or Mystic Caves or Oil Ocean or Scrap Brain or Lava Reef or Mystic Mansion or Metropolis (yes, THAT Metropolis Zone-the music alone would be worth it!) or Tidal Tempest or Aquarium Park! (Yes, I’m fangirling, leave me alone). Heck, even additional boss fights consisting of classic Robotnik clashes would have been nice. The game was Sonic Team’s own love letter to the series, but it really sucks that it was so short. I mean, why couldn’t they have added more content? It’s not like they had to grapple for the rights for any of the stages!
