Silent Bomber was a forgotten playstation 1 game made by Bandai, it's only 2 hours long but the final level often takes over an hour due to the spike in difficulty.
It's a cross between bomberman and bullet hell shooters with elements of platforming, and shares a voice cast with 'The Bouncer'.
but, was it actually any good?

He's also given some decent characterization in just his introduction. The line "We just need to fight as we always have," suggests both a record of success and a conservatism of approach. He's set in his ways, but they've proven to be effective ways. He has grey hair, a cane, and walks with a little limp. This suggests not only is he old enough to have racked up a long record, he's also showing old wounds of battle (to his foot, leg, or hip) and that he won't let such wounds keep him off the field. Finally, the "You're the greatest warrior I've ever seen. I regret nothing!" suggests that he knows his unwillingness to diverge from his methods is what got him and his unit killed, but he doesn't care. He truly believed in himself and is at peace with what he's done and the death he's about to meet.

Hey, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Bioshock made some pretty effective story experiences based on the "I only know my commander as a voice on the radio" premise. Silent Bomber was a bit ahead of it's time in that regard. It's not necessarily executed well in this game's case, but the concept isn't an unworkable one.

Seems like the games that are harder to go back to are the fully 3D games. 2D games like Symphony of the Night and 2.5D games like Klonoa and Tomba hold up quite well and are still fun. There's some 3D games that are still fun though like Tekken 3 and the game he covered not too long ago Future Cop LAPD.

For the chess part, if you use 8 bombs to kill the enemies it shortens the stage considerably, the enemies will make a different sound when they explode and for Benoit himself I just place the bombs in the ground and wait for him to walk through, made it so much easier and I was so happy the first time I beat this. Awesome game I still replay every once in a while when the emulation bug bites me.

Yeah, I remembered having so much fun with this game. Even recognized the Silent Bomber reference in the .hack games. Beating this game was probably one of my biggest gaming achievements as a kid, because I figured out that in the final boss fight against Benoit, the arena actually has no borders, so I just infinitely ran down the whole fight and jumped over whatever Benoit did, only stopping to plant a bomb on him, kind of like what Josh did. Kudos to Josh for actually having played the game, too!

I remember getting the Megaman X Collection for PS2 and X4 definitely stood out as a favorite for many reasons. Even the meme-worthy cutscenes were so cheesy they were fantastic and I wish the series would've kept the anime cutscenes for later games as they were visually stylish while being funny.... 8:17 - I did read the manual back in the day, and I have a minor correction for you. As you noted, Jutah was created as a weapon as part of Hornet's military government to suppress a popular uprising. The uprising succeeded though and Hornet underwent a revolution, in which Jutah was arrested as a war criminal. However, *Jutah did not break out.* Rather, he and the other members of his little squad are almost all criminals on Hornet, each with their own reasons for imprisonment, save for the squad leader who's the only representative of Hornet's military (now under civilian control) and John who is a partisan who volunteered. They're sent as a kind of "Dirty Dozen"-type of force to try and exploit some IFF codes the Hornet government had gotten to board the Dante and conduct sabotage. They might not be able to destroy such a titanic ship itself, but they might be able to disrupt it and disable some of its systems, so that Hornet's fleet (backed up by a lot of mercenary ships) would have a better chance at stopping it. Oh, and when that guy does a creepy laugh about "Which player will be fortunate enough to checkmate fate," it's not *just* a cryptic comment out of left field. "Fate" is Jutah's surname; he's taunting Jutah (and using some pretty heavy-handed foreshadowing.) [EDIT]: This also explains Macino at 26:03. She too is a criminal and she thinks she found a way to escape, and she intends to coerce Jutah into helping her. At 40:21, while it's not a *complete* explanation, according to the manual Benoit is this kind of legendary rebel, but he's not picky about *whom* he's rebelling against. He'll find some cause people are fighting for, join the side looking to overturn whatever the current status quo is, then help them. Not only that, he will seemingly sincerely believe in whatever cause he joins, even if the ideology of that cause is completely opposite of an ideology of another cause he seemed to sincerely believe in. What he seems to want to do is to simply keep overturning the world, constantly, forever. He can't leave situations static, it's the chaos of revolution and change he seems to love. This is speculation on my part, but The Dante is this super-weapon of an interplanetary empire (they use it like the Death Star of Star Wars to threaten planetary destruction as a way of imposing their will,) and by taking it over and destroying it (even if that means crashing it into the planet it was sent to destroy) seems like one of the biggest things he can do to upset the power of that empire, and he's loving the thrill of it. It has to be one of the biggest scale revolutions he's been able to participate in.

I don't get it. If you mean the graphics design then ok but graphics quality? That really does not matter much. Looking pretty does not make a game good. Not to mention that that's the entire point, these games are *was* it any good. It would be stupid to do 'was it any good' on a modern game because Josh has no history or nostalgia to test in the first place. He tests games that he remembers fondly and he's old enough that he mostly has nostalgia for games that young people today would consider archaic. Seems like Josh doesn't matter the graphics much either considering how many games in this series he concludes to be good.

Fun fact, Tail Concerto's intro theme, For Little Tail, was also Kokia's first song! Unfortunately I've never been able to find a good quality version of the original, but she did pretty good versions since. She provided vocals for a few little games later on, such as Demon's Souls, Ar tonelico Qoga, FF 13-2 and Dark Souls 3.

Haven’t played this game but the yellow suited nemesis reminds me so much of Teisel Bonne in megaman legends. You become nemesis’ with him simply due to you both looking for the motherload and you inherently stopping his plans. And every time you fight and beat him and his family, he has a “HOW?! HOOOOW?!?” Mentality. Also each fight has a bigger machine. To the point where one fight takes place in an “industrial district” of the first city where you fight a massive machine that crushes the buildings around you (aside from the first fight with them where it’s in a residential district and people’s home can actually be destroyed). What a great game

Funny that you bring up the demo disc. I've played and beaten Silent Bomber a couple times but I'm positive the most time I've spent with it was playing a Japanese demo on a Playstation Underground disc over and over for days when I was a kid. Other than *maybe* a PS1 Ghost in the Shell demo -- or a demo for Tail Concerto, funnily enough -- from a different OPM disc, it's probably the one demo I've played more than any in my life.

On the one hand, yeah the story is melodramatic and the ideas you had about gameplay choices would have helped a lot. On the other hand, they literally said in the first cutscene that they AREN'T a crack unit and that they're surprised that they're all Hornet could scramble together for this mission. There's a reason they needed a war criminal who got locked up after a training mission gone horribly wrong (for real how did our character get so badass? Did they keep training Jutah as a weapon in prison? Is he a super soldier?) Your impression is supposed to be that they're a bunch of dumb rookies but at least they've got heart or whatever and that's why Jutah the Great sticks his neck out for them. But maybe i just read too many manhua where you feel bad for how hard all the side characters have to work just to be worthy of shining MC's boots and have some sympathy bias lol

The design of the game sort of makes me think that perhaps they wanted some sort of arcade-centric game, realized that game centers just aren't a thing overseas, then dolled it up a little bit for a home release. The 1-2 hour window is what many modern arcade games shoot for.

The narrative issues with some games, lots of Japanese ones (their media in general) is they make hard contrasts in character personalities. It's supposed to help define each character, but what ends up happening is you have archetypes acting out tropes instead of being plausible people. It's especially glaring when dealing with professionals or soldiers of a kind, because they don't act like they've been through any training whatsoever. I think it was less painful back then and all the more glaring now when you've grown up seeing it done so much over the decades.

I fondly remember getting my original PlayStation back in the Philippines in 1999. The country also had a pirated games market where you can get dirt cheap copies of any game of any localization. Needless to say, my parents got me a thirty-plus game collection, and Silent Bomber was part of it, specifically the original Japanese version. The graphical and gameplay design absolutely dazzled me at the time when I saw my dad messing around with the game for a bit. I tried it out for myself eventually, and oh what fun it was working through the Hiragana and Katakana. As you can tell, I love this game and have played it to death. With that said, I’d like to correct some info in this video and add a few of my own. In the Japanese version, you cannot skip the tutorial at all, whereas you can in the North American version. Also in the Japanese version, you are taken directly to the pause menu when you…well, pause the game. No need to press Start and THEN Select. There’s a pretty well-hidden mechanic in the game that is somewhat hinted at, which is the score multiplier. Basically, amassing a kill streak will result in the score being multiplied ranging from x2 all the way to x10. Each enemy yielded different score amounts, with the mission objectives yielding the most, so it was ideal to amass the multiplier from smaller foes before going after the big fish. The kill streak ends if Jutah takes a hit or after a three-second period. Speaking of scoring, the ranking system factors in speed, remaining health and kill streaks. If you’re fast, have taken no damage and have blown up plenty of hostiles, you’re guaranteed the highest rank. And the highest rank is actually S, not A. And each rank is separated by increments of 50000 points. For each increment you hit on your total, you go up a rank. So the challenge becomes reaching an S Rank in every mission, which is far from easy. Of course, poor performance, including using a Continue after dying in a mission, will reduce your total score and thus your rank. The incentive for reaching high ranks in every mission is unlocking Benoit and the Cat Tank in the 1v1 mode. You get Benoit for Straight A’s and the Tank for Straight S’s. Anyway, I’m so happy that Silent Bomber is being remembered in 2023, and with a hefty 200k views to boot. This was a nice watch. 😊

Hey man. Hang in there. Were they prescribed or ...? I'm going on 5 years clean myself. Look into kratom. I used it multiple times to get off opiates. I was in the hospital once for a month and they were giving me IV dilaudid every few hours, that kratom saved me from the worst WDs ever once I was released. @@dracmeister so much of the Metal Gear Solid series is about the neverending nature of combat and how many of the characters are just sort of resigned to being nothing but soldiers who want nothing more than to keep fighting until they die in battle. That also reminds me of the iconic Fallout opening lines of "War. War never changes." I love the social commentary of both series and I really enjoyed seeing the attitude in a different game

Loved the video! Always nice to find out about a cool game I never heard of. The VS mode made me weirdly angry in a good way because I love playing as the enemies in games, but it never happens as often as I'd like. A mode where I can be any of them, fighting anything? Yes please!

Ahh yes, my introduction to war crimes in video games. I remember being able to play the bosses in the versus mode being the coolest thing, shame i never had anyone to play with.

This game was so good. My brother had it and I loved watching him playing. The last boss was so cruel and we could never find the last hidden collectable to unlock the last boss to play as. Great IP.
