My guess is a glitch desync temporarily on front right motor, and then when the FC tried to correct it you just happened to be too low. If you were up higher I'm guessing you might have saved it.
@MattShonan
@MattShonan Жыл бұрын
Really could be, just the strange thing is that it gets more and more into a nose dive. That means both front motors did not produce enough thrust. One I can understand but both is difficult to explain. Also the inconsistency that the front right one spools up and recovers but then the front left one seems to be lagging behind with thrust creating that strange banking from right to left and back to the right before it nose dives into the water. I hope the re build I am working on will be just fine. Have a great day and happy flying!

looks a bit like the time my lipostrap failed and the lipo keeps dangeling around. but that was on a small toothpick with lipo on the bottom, not topmounted where it would probably cut the powerleads immediatly ...

Never thought about this. Yes, seems that could explain such a flight behavior, however in my case here the battery was wet mounted, on top, with 2 battery straps. Therefore it is highly unlikely that the battery moved creating this issue. Happy flying and have a nice day!

I was thinking a birb clipped it at first too but unless it just barely hit it, it didn’t seem abrupt or violent enough. Even a light hit seems it would’ve spun out(yaw/roll/pitch)more. If you had gps rescue then most likely wasn’t a failsafe/Rx loss. I assume vid was lost right as the clip ends, just before going into the water? I had 2 quads do something very similar to this twice in the past year. Neither time I lost video at all, but it was on land. 1 failure was due to a component blow on an AIO. The 2nd failure was due to a cold solder on the negative lead at the XT60 end. It flew maybe 6 fights before it started having issues. I found it was the connection after wiggling it a few times. On the bench I could see a crack and was able to separate it with a few more wiggles(like a baby tooth). BEFORE anyone says that’s a rookie mistake, sure. It is, but it doesn’t mean it never happens with those that are experienced. I’ve been soldering for a long time. Longer than I’ve been flying & building quads(about 5-6 years now)and I’ve built dozens of quads. I’m not trying to brag, and I realize a person can do something a long time, doesn’t mean they’re doing it CORRECTLY. Just to point out that I’m not a noob at soldering or building quads.😅

This happened to me once. The stator was loose and would turn with the bell all of a sudden and stall the drone like that. But at lower speeds it would stll fly. Took me some time to figure out, and must have happened after a crash. Getting the drone back to check it would be the best way to find out.

Among all really valuable comments on my video here, yours might be the one hiding the nail on the head!!! I was flying the FPV Cycles 21mm I love those motors but they ha some issues with their supplier before switching to uni-bell design. I never thought about how it might look like if the bell gets loose but it totally makes sense. Not a bird after all?!? I really have a spike in motivation now to dive down there to get it back finding out what happened to the motors. I want to rebuild the quad and planning to use the exact same motors. If they were creating this issue, I would need to know for sure before flying long range over water. Thanks again for your comment and have a great day !!! Happy flying :)

Its crazy bro. Me and my friend went down in the water as well. I have flown in the river i was at before but decided to go to the other side with my friend. We both was flying. We both build our own quads. Both also using crossfire. He went down first and me a couple of seconds later. We both still dont know what went wrong. Both builds used expensive parts. Not a bird strike. The initial roll to the right/pitch down wasn’t violent enough. There clearly wasn’t an impact. Had to either be a mechanical issue with that RF motor, a desynch from that ESC, or maybe a gyro that was starting to fail.

Yes, I actually shared the build video > this one here kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3rWeH1ndpmfm80 And also the maiden flight which went very well > this one here kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWiZkq17ptBoi5o Thank you for your comment, it really seems that it looks like this when a battery is loose. Someone else made a similar comment regarding this and it was his experience as well. However, in my case I was using 2 straps PLUS a brand new Ummagawd, Ummagrip super sticky battery pad, which alone would hole the battery without battery straps in place. Also my battery is mounted on top and if it shifted it would very quickly hit the rotors and then the quad would spiral into the ground. If the battery is mounted at the bottom of the quad this could be a more likely scenario. Well, I more and more feel I have to dive down there to get is back to finally have clarity. Thank you very much for your comment and have a great day! Happy flying :)

As I suspected your power leads are on the left hand side of the multicopter. I’ve had batteries slip out of the heat-shrink before, so even if you did strap that battery down well it’s still a possibility. I’ve flown a quad home after having the battery slip out before, it’s very similar looking to the way your drone was behaving. It could have been a number of things and even if you recover it you will likely never know what happened due to crash/water damage. Good luck.
@MattShonan
@MattShonan Жыл бұрын
Yes you are right, it is possible and I can not totally rule it out. I was strapping the battery leads in at least under one of the two straps when I actually fly. That was not the case in the build video, I do not fly like this but got a bit lazy when I made the bench photos and videos simulations the actual flight configuration. What makes me believe it was not the battery lead though is, that they are on the left side. However the first error in flight was lading to a dip to the right. For triggering that event the battery leads would have to be on the right side getting in conflict with the engines making them loose thrust on the right leading to a right dip. Weather is cold right now but I hope for some calm days in December to dive down there, littered getting to the bottom of things :)

If it was a birdstrike, it was probably one of those seagulls that you can see on those stones to the right of where you crashed. Seagulls attack other birds when threatened. The only other idea I could come up with is a bad solder job on one of the motor wires or a desync of sorts, but that usually shows pretty early.

It did look to my eyes that some external force initiated the right roll & forward pitch. The quad seemed to try to counteract that force, but could not before crashing. Bird strike seems most plausible to my eyes, as well. > This makes me think about trying to have a second person with a high magnification camera to track the quad. It is not an easy thing to do, but I think in my own personal flights, I will begin to try to practice this on flights where I feel it may be helpful. The most important part of this, would be finding a person who is good at using a long range scope, and has steady hands. The pilot and the person with the camera would have to work together and do their best to plan a flight path that makes it easiest for the camera person to keep the quad in sight, with as little effort as possible. Not an easy task, but if pulled together, would make for a very good video, as well as flight diagnostics.

Were sanity checks still enabled? As GPS rescue can disarm the drone for many silly reasons when they are enabled and I would disable them especially when flying over water. The drone looks like it cut power to the motors to me similar to when I have had drones disarm when testing GPS Rescue in the past. Remember that disarming the motors does not brake them to a stop they will auto rotate in the air. Also its best to make sure the failsafe stage 1 delay is turned off so that it goes straight into GPS-rescue instead of holding some arbitrary throttle position for a period of time. Edit : Oh another point runaway takeoff prevention has been known to disarm drones mid flight when it thinks its detected an event if your confident in your procedures then just disable it when flying over water etc. It supposed to turn off after take-off but I think it relies on the throttle going above a certain position to do that.
@MattShonan
@MattShonan Жыл бұрын
You are right that is a high risk! My setting for RTH is always "failsafe only". Basically the same setting at what JB discussed in his standard setup for RTH. However, as Joshua Bardwell mentioned on this video here, we don't think can be a failsafe issue at all since the motors kept spinning. If sanity checks failed, even if they were enabled by accident, the motors would have stopped and the quad would have just fallen out of the air. Yes, I guess it would have taken time to stop for the rotors after disarming but the video was cutting out at the time I disarmed by reflex. It was just when I was about to hit the water. All what happened before is actually showing that the motors spooled up on the front right and then again on the front left trying to get out from this situation but something else went wrong at the same time. That is why I felt at first it was a bird grabbing it from behind. One comment here said it could be the bell becoming loose and this is now my other top reason I can think of. Also the reason why I seriously consider to finally take the "risk" and will try to dive down there to get it back for investigation. I really hope to avoid this from happening again since I am flying quite a bit over water. Thanks, have a great day and happy flying!!! PS > stage 1 failsafe was not active and the RTH is kicking in immediately in my long range setups. (my freestyle quads, flying in and around structures, go to stage 1 first before 2 kicks in.)

My guess is your ESC hit some low voltage cutoff, it does appear you had control of the aircraft on the way down, but lost ability of thrust? If this is a Lithium-ion cylinder cell then 3.7 could be too low especially after that long-term high throttle. I try to drop power and fly slower after long bursts, don't fly at high throttle for too long over water I learned that the hard way you must give it some breaks in between on the flight. Please post your ESC settings.
