Joshua Shirk was in a kayaking accident on May 17, 2020, in WV. He was underwater for a significant amount of time and was dead. Given little chance at survival or recovery, BUT GOD! He is currently at home, recuperating, and still receives outpatient therapy services.

I almost drowned going down a river in innertubes and rafts. We hit a rapid and I was flipped and the current pulled me to the bottom of the river. I couldn't get to the surface no matter how hard I tried and I was spinning. The next time I came around I saw something in the water that wasn't there before so I grabbed it. It was my big brother on the other end of a big stick and he saved my life pulled me out of the river. I never river rafted again it was such a scary experience. I pray Joshua gets better with each day. Ppl don't realize just how strong those river currents are. I know I didn't and I was a good swimmer.

This happened to a young boy scout that was brought into our hospital years ago, the boy had his life jacket on and he also fell out of his kayak flipped over his jack got caught onto tree branches which kept him under the water, but there was not a underwater current or rushing water like what this child was caught into this is so sad you have all the right safety in placed and still an accident happens.

Thank you for sharing your story. It is heartbreaking to hear and only you and your family who are there every day for Joshua can fathom the struggle and pain that you experience. Your love, care, support and advocacy for your son is truly inspiring. May God give you the strength, patience and perseverance to get through each day. I hope that Joshua will continue to recover and I pray for him and your family. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Even if it is just for 10 minutes every day. God bless.

Im sorry! First an alone 8 year old in kayak, A person who cant swim, a swift current and she talks like this is an accident. People who kayak know to call about the river conditions so that trees from the winter storms are marked. AND !!! NO !!! Life vest DO NOT protect a person and have them surface when stuck on a downed tree. Im disgusted at her naive and the father to let his child all one WITHOUT a buddy and all the over fatal mistakes they made. This is on them!! Check Mckenzie River kayaking in oregon and they will tell you the do nots while kayaking.

That same thing happened to me (trapped under water against a downed tree) and couldn’t move. Thank God my brother was able to walk to the end the tree and saw my hand and was able to grab it and pull me out just in time.

Children are too little to go Kayaking in natural bodies of water. That was very irresponsible. That's like letting a child drive a car, then he gets in a car crash...and expect sympathy from people.

Just because u prefer living under a rock don't mean the rest of the world does, teaching independence and learning skills other than using drugs are not bad things, yes there are safety regulations put in place to keep accidents low however they will never be prevented, and blaming a mother that im sure already self blames and plays the scenerio in her head on repeat was uncalled for and cruel, my son has half of a heart everthing he does should be limited but hes not going to live in bubble wrap he lives like a normal kid, maybe not the safest but whats a life of living under a rock? MOMA this is not ur fault things happen in life that are beyond our control dont worry yourself to death about things you cannot change because of bored idiots like the one above, also where are yall from I saw a bama shirt in one of the videos# rolltide we live in north bama!!! [ copy and pasted from a kayaking page> Kids age 5 and up can start paddling a child-sized kayak. From age 5 to 11 kids easily paddle a kayak short distances on their own with an appropriately sized kayak, paddle, and the right water conditions for their age.

I'm sure they're extremely sorry they made that decision. There's simply no purpose in stating the obvious. What's done is done and your words aren't going to change that.
