I suggest performing a walk test to get an idea of how the the LQ and RSSI drop off, but more importantly, how long it takes before the link is re-established. It's easy to do: set the TX to 10dbm and put it in a microwave and then walk away with your quad in your hand and with your goggles until the link is lost and observe how the LQ / RSSI degrade. I noticed that once the link was lost, that it didn't come back no matter how I oriented the frame. I had to walk a short distance back before the link was re-established. That is a little disconcerning.

Thanks for the video! I'm using DJI FPV Goggles and ELRS and using the Aux11 (LQ value) and sending that value to the OSD using the RSSI "slot" or what you fall it. All configured in Betaflight. Is there a way to display the RSSI dbm-value also? As I understand DJI OSD don't support showing that?
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 3 жыл бұрын
With DJI, it's not possible to display RSSI dBm or LQ. You have to pick one, assign it to the aux channel, and use it only. You will still know that "RSSI" is actually "LQ" but you can't see both and you can't see them in correct units.

You could however use logical switches in combination with special functions on your radio to give siglow and sigcrit when 1RSS telemetry is < -98db. And crit at like -102 but that's pushing it.
@ed_halley
@ed_halley 2 жыл бұрын
@@JoshuaBardwell I am not clear on how to get any aux channel to show up in DJI OSD, nor how to have OpenTX react/alarm to ELRS LQ or RSSI dBm. My closest guess is that "assign it to the aux channel" is a Crossfire LUA ability, not an ELRS LUA ability.
@nitronut1723
@nitronut1723 2 жыл бұрын
@@ed_halley If you use the modified version of betaflight that replaces the craft name with the warning text string. Then you can set specific warnings when the RSSI and/or LQ or RSSIdbm go below a certain value. Then you setup OSD warnings to display and these will show up in your screen as a warning. Another way is to setup in your radio in the telemetry tab so that you can create audio warning for singal low and/or signal critical. You will need to play with settings until you are happy. Everyone recommends to place the ELRS to lowest possible power level to help find a floor for the area you fly in to make sure everything works correctly. Then you readjust power levels to normal and you are set.

So higher negative dbi is bad i think . Almost sure . Kind of wonder . Maybe the weight is off . But as soon as i found the signal bars sticking out from behind some other osd i was able to slide rssidbm out from under fs display and then made my lq rsssi dbi cluster resemble everyone else's.

I thought RSSI didn't consider the signal-to-noise ratio so why is it of any use at all? Why not just rely on link quality alone like you would for Crossfire? I appreciate that coming up with the correct threshold is somewhat of a guess as you mentioned, but the same can be said for the 10dBm tolerance that you suggested for the alarm. Also wouldn't hitting the RSSI sensitivity limit be a much harsher / quicker limit than link quality? Would link quality be more granular where it matters? (I.e. Towards the limit)
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 3 жыл бұрын
LQ tends to stay high until SNR gets low then crater rapidly. So knowing you have strong RSSI is useful. Also why I say any time LQ starts to drop at all youshoukd pay attention.
@hofa
@hofa 3 жыл бұрын
Once you get to the RSSI dbm limit, LQ drops like a brick with ELRS so you'd failsafe if you didn't look at LQ for a few seconds. - High LQ & low RSSI = getting to the end of the range - Lower LQ & High RSSI = noisy RF environment - Low LQ & Low RSSI = you're about to failsafe. Also: LQ of 10 with 500Hz packet rate is like LQ of 100 with 50Hz crossfire 🤣 I know it's not that simple but still: 50 packets a second. There's no comparing the two when it comes to LQ.

Why didn't you consider switching the transmitter module out as well while "troubleshooting" your receiver? I'm honestly asking because I'm thinking wouldn't the received dB get worse on the rX as well when the tX is having its own issues? (meaning if your module had had an issue and you switched it for an undamaged one would the 1RSS also get better?) Trying to wrap my head around the relation between transmitter RSS and receiver RSS which Crossfire shows for basically every present antenna...) anyhow, thanks a lot for the insights so far

It's really better to use RSSI dBm and the X:YY form of lq. They give more useful information about the link. If you really want to make it like old style crossfire, aux11 and aux11 are lq and RSSI. Set one of them as the RSSI aux channel and then use RSSI in your OSD instead of RSSI dBm and lq.

If you are flying with a servo at 50hz and a link of 100hz speed at LQ 100 you are getting x2 the data to control the servo. At LQ 50 you are getting 50 instructions per a second and 1:1 with the servo at LQ10 you get 10 instructions per second through but unless you are making more than 10 changes per second it should be still flyable. Does this sound right?

Well yeah, you're flying at 5 times the packet rate of crossfire. LQ will be a bit more sensitive as it's the percentage of received packets as opposed to sent packets. If you have 2% loss on crossfire (98 LQ), your quad is receiving 49 packets a second. On ELRS 250Hz, receiving 49 packets is only 20 LQ. I wonder if you get the same fluctuation on 50Hz.

That's pretty common with an ep1 and t style or even dipole antenna and in line with what I see with my ep1's.. JB is talking about the tiny smd antenna on an ep2. I generally get high -40's to low -50's on my ep2's at 1 meter 10mw. I don't even get a little nervous flying until LQ hits and hangs around 50% with dbm in the high-90's. Months of flying ELRS daily with exactly zero fail safes flying ep1 and ep2 recivers, module set at 500hz 100mw..

@@JoshuaBardwell The ELRS wiki says -30 to -40 for 2.4ghz, and -20 for 900. For the EP2s apparently you should be in the -40 to -60 range because of the "ceramic" antenna according to the ELRS devs I talked to. FWIW I get -50 +/- 3 db on my DIY 2.4 TX and an EP2.

Hey thank you for your help Joshua. But for some reason my Lq reads and stays at zero for some reason on my osd. All though my rssi dbm is showing the gains and drops. 🤔 I would love to just have the Lq read 2:100 or something but it all stays at 0:0. What am I doing wrong and as for my other quad I cannot seem to manage on CLI command -107 to set my osd rssi dbm alarm as on my transmitter it is on -117 but through cLI command It will only allow me to add positive number for some reason 0-130 I don’t know why. Any quick suggestions. Thank you 😊

What science is behind the adding 10 to a limit dBm value to get the alarm value? I'd understand adding 6, which means that you still might fly double the distance until failsafe or adding 12, which would tell you that 4 times more range is still available. But why 10? It sounds like an odd number just fabricated out of nothing...
@JoshuaBardwell

That's what the ELRS devs recommend. Bear in mind RSSI fluctuates a lot especially if you don't have a diversity receiver. But the truth is that's just what they recommend.

Here trying to figure out an issue I'm having with ELRS and at the end of this video i'm just more confused than before... I have 2 identical receivers (Jumper AION) 1 has 98-100 LQ at a 1meter distance... the other oscillates between 25-70LQ I inspected the antenna and found that one of the poles had broken so I soldered it back on and the LQ sat at 80-95 for about 10 seconds before reverting to oscillating between 25 and 70. Does anyone have similar experiences? Also if it is just an antenna issue what antennas are compatible with ELRS Receivers?
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 2 жыл бұрын
You can't solder back an antenna wire like that. It's coaxial wire. Once it breaks, it's very difficult to repair correctly. You should replace the antenna. You can buy spare antennas for any 2.4 GHz ELRS receiver and most likely they will all be compatible. I suggest the Happymodel antennas or you can also use IRC Ghost antennas.

@@JoshuaBardwell ah dang it just looked like a solid wire to me it broke on the T section but if I missed the internal element in my inspection no wonder it’s still acting up! Thanks for the reply! I wish I put this Rx/antenna to use when I bought it literally never been flown would’ve returned lol >.< I’m used to Frsky style antennas so these T shaped antennas are new to me, I might look at the Ghost antennas I feel like id trust their build quality more than Jumper / betafpv at this point.

Mine too. Tried to solder it back on and it only held up for a week and I got -90 db and higher while flying again.
