I wanted to be Josie from this movie so bad that I begged my mom to let me get my hair cut like her but I didn’t understand it requires actual styling so I basically ended up with a mushroom cut and I cried on the floor.

Love this movie. I don't know how it wasn't more popular at the time. It's hilarious and it has a fantastic soundtrack (most of it written by the late, great Adam Schlesinger). Its satire is a little on the nose, but it does such a great job parodying the trends of the time, and it feels pretty self-aware of its corniness. The two theories that have been floating around as to why this movie flopped; 1: It was released soon after 9/11 and the opening featured a comedic plane crash, and 2: The boyband trends it was parodying seemed to have just ended, and ironically, the once cooler pop punk music became the new music of the screaming teens.

Very insightful. I remember I loved it as a kid, I just didn't know why at the time. This however, is an excellent explanation of why I might have liked it, as well as many other black-sheep 90's kids like me.

@@Spiritualvirtue Yeah, same. As a little kid, I loved the bubble gum pop 90's music having an older sister. And then as I started coming into my own, I discovered Blink 182 and Green Day. This movie seemed tailored to me haha

I agree with most of what you said, but it was released in April of 2001, five months *before* 9/11. At the same time, I'm pretty sure 9/11 hurt its chances of a getting a second life on DVD. When 9/11 happened, anything scheduled for release had airplane references removed.

According to the cast, Tara Reid was the only one that learned how to play the drums because in her scenes it was hard for her not to hit the drums. The rest of the cast just faked it, but they had Tara take actual lessons because it was easier for them to have her playing the right notes than it was for then to try to suppress the sound of her drums
