The way Germans count is so funny! Once I asked my German husband how many loaves of bread he wanted, and then I asked “Do you want two?” And he showed me his thumb, which (for me) means “okay” or “Genau” or just agreeing someone. To confirm I asked again and I baked two loaves of bread for him and he said “I said only 1” and we had this big discussion of numbers with the hands, and I was saying that the number one is with the forefinger and never with the thumb😅 now I learned and he learned. Another common thing Germans do is to blow their noses while seated in the dining table, no matter if people are still eating. I think that’s not nice, but they think it’s normal. Who is the weird one? No one, we are just different.

As someone who is Asian the whole not taking off your shoes in the house is so bizarre to me. My bf is Venezuelan and when I visited his sister’s house she said I could keep my shoes on. Of course I didn’t do as she said. 😂 Nothing worse than getting dirt in your home imo. I just can’t. Lol.

I have slippers for home. Then I have my street shoes. I thought as an American this was common but of course found out no it is not. My mother is from Mexico and she’s the one who would always yell as us for wearing our street shoes inside. So that part of the video was super interesting for me.
@bartoszwojciechowski22702 жыл бұрын
yeah, as a Pole, I fully agree. I think most countries in Europe have this custom of taking one's shoes off before entering other ppl's homes (and their own but I think even Americans don't walk with their shoes on around their own apartments), except maybe for Ireland and the UK.

I am from the United States and my boyfriend from Germany. When we first met 5 years ago when he wanted me to remind him to do something, instead of saying "remind me to..." he would say "remember me to...." from the direct translation "erinnere mich". I thought that was so cute and let him say that for about four months before I finally corrected it lol

I am not sure if I do that - with sounds weird haha 8. hand gesture: I don’t do that. 9. can’t really talk about that because I am not a guy or dated anyone 10. in Austria as well. I'm German and I never heard of that "du schaffst das schon song" and didn't know about that "I swear" sign with the hands. About the happy birthday, in my experience it usually happens when there is a group of friends with you but not a single person. I sang it a few times alone to a very good friend. I once didn't know the english word kettle word so I said "water cooker" instead. For the shoes it's often the case that we take them off but not always. For example in my grandparents house we never took our shoes off when we visited them for a few hours.

8:45 In Spain we also tend to say (for example) "with 12 I did...". Don't know how it's said in Latam but in Spain we never say "cuando tenía 12 años..." or "a los 12 años...". Both are totally correct but never say it that way. We usually say "a los 12 (and we skip "años" because it's impied)" or "con 12 años..." (literally "with 12 years...) and when we're learning Englisgh it's the form we incorrectly use, the same as Janik.

I was nodding along the whole time! And you're soooo not alone, Joss! It IS adorable, haha! I don't know if Janik ever did something like this, but the guy I dated for the longest time would text me, "I'm so exited" about something he was happy about and I didn't have the heart for the first month or two to correct him to "excited" because it was so cute to read it (then I realized the super disservice I was doing-- eep!). We still laugh about it today and will say, "Hey, are you exited about tomorrow?" or like, "You know, I'm super exited." Haha! I loved this video♡ ALSO! The "with 20" thing-- SO TRUE! They don't realize it either and get soooo confused when you point it out. 9 years later, still happening. I doubt it will change, haha!

Yeah, there was a time (mid 2000s to mid 2010s) when every boy always had the same hair as Justin Bieber, at least in Germany. I already knew Janik had some Justin Bieber hairstyle when he said he had a different hairstyle in High School. It was just that time. The hairstyle Janik is describing was the worst of all of them. The hair was always hanging in all the boy's faces and then they all had to shake their heads weirdly to the side all the time so that the hair would not fall in front of their eyes. That was also the time when they all wore their trousers not on their hips but on their ass, so you would always see half of their underpants, and men's bracelets made out of leather were somehow popular among teenage boys
