Also I think sheds are absolutely stunning! :-) In 4th grade, my science teacher had a ginormous shed! It was probably more than 10 feet and she hung it on her wall. You could see all the markings and they were gorgeous!

Hi Joss! I wanted to leave a comment saying thank you! I've watched your videos since before I was married and my husband and I got a snake and you've walked me through so much with her. When she first got home we upgraded her case to 20lb from maybe 10lb. We should have given her time o adjust but so happy to have her we ended up stressing her out. Her sheds were terrible too and took over a week to come off her face... but Today we found her on her greenery scratching and saw a nearly full shed in her case!! I'm so happy you're a KZbinr, everything I've walked my husband through doing (I'm pregnant so my maternal instincts actually have me a little nervous to hold our pretty baby) has definitely improved her health! My favorite suggestion is the hydrometer (gyrometer?) . I used to think if it looked humid it was, but the humidity almost never changes. It was eye opening really and got me looking into her case every day. Even when I'm too tired to stand up hehe.... so thanks Joss!! Fern is so happy today her shed came off a foot long!

My royal python Ezron (only had him a week) is very nice and gentle. He is almost done his shed but I tried to handle him and got a light hiss. Not aggressive but just letting me know "hey, I'm uncomfortable right now please leave me alone." so my question is: has this happened to you before and do you handle your snakes while they are in shed?
@JossersJungle7 жыл бұрын
Hi Terrance! Great question! I usually don't handle my snakes when they are in shed, unless I have a good reason for it. They can get a little grumpy and I'm guessing it's slightly uncomfortable going through a shed. I haven't experienced any direct aggressive behaviour in my snakes. My best advice would be to leave them alone until they are done shedding :-)

My boa had shedding problems in a exo terra because of the ventilation the humidity stayed really low, so to stop that i put glass on the ventilation everytime she is going in shed so that the humidity Stays high. This worked really well for me.
@johnschlesinger20094 жыл бұрын
Humidity is only partly the issue. Hydration is also very important. It has been shown that tropical snakes absorb a significant amount of moisture from the atmosphere, whereas dersert dwellers do not. It isn’t true that the pattern is always visible on the shed: this depends on the species. It is very important to check that both eyecap scales have shed: if one or both has been retained, these need ro be removed, and if you have not done this, it is best to get help from a vet. The tail is also important: if the skin is retained here, the snake can end up losing part of its tail due to loss of blood supply.

I have a baby ball python and he shed twice, both times that he’s shed it’s been in little pieces all over the cage and his head has never stoped shedding. I’m really scared that his humidity is low in his glass terrarium so I moved his bowl onto his heating pad and changed where his hide went(witch is no longer over the heating pad) and I put a towel over the humid side of his terrarium. I also want to use a humidity box when he sheds and I just wanted to know if all of these changes will work and be good for my snake. Thank you so much you have really helped me feel more confident with the health of my snake. 😊

When your snake goes into shed are you supposed to peel of the shed? Or does she mean unroll it once it is off the snake?
@JossersJungle7 жыл бұрын
The snake will get the shed of by itself. There is no need to peel it off, unless it is a bad shed and it already tried to get it off by itself, then something can be stuck and you will have to give a hand. But a healthy snake kept in a proper setup will have no trouble shedding it all of in one big beautiful piece. You will mostly have to unroll it yourself after the snake gets it off, by sometimes they also do leave an unrolled shed for you to just take out :-)

Just had my very first shed with my very first albino corn snake. It was all in one piece, luckily, even with the head. He wrapped his tail around a plant in the terrarium and slid out of it. I had to unwrap it from the plant to remove it, but it did not even break. Anyway I was very curious to ask.... How exactly do you store The Sheds? My corn snake is a baby so the shed is only about a foot... If that. I just put it in a Ziploc freezer bag for now. 😬🤷🏻♀ I want to make a scrapbook for him and include his sheds as well. But I am not quite sure exactly the best way to store and protect them from the elements over time. Any advice... anyone??? It will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. 🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍

HELP ME PLEASE!!! WENT THRU 1ST SHED HERE DID NOT KNOW.. NEWBIE- CONFUSED! OK,I am a newbie, but one of my new baby BP, i had for just over a week, apparently went into shed, and I did not know because i woke up today and i see a big long thingy, obviously the shed in the cage, and I know what it is, BUT I handle her and my kids handle her pretty much daily, and she is like a greyish purple (purple passion), and has blue eyes already, and I THOUGHT they looked a bit cloudy the other day but my kids and my hubby said they looked the same. I didn't see the pink belly, she fed like 4 days ago just fine, but she didn't look dull to me, she didn't look all peely, she was quiet yesterday, my daughter held her for awhile, she didn't mind, but how long b4 shed should these 'changes' take place, nd what about with blue eyed snakes that have dark blue to begin with, and did i sleep through this 'blue' phase i just woke up to? I don't completey understand the whole thing, but I didn't notice anything but her being quiet yesterday, but they are quiet animals. I have another baby ball too, so i gotta know these things, lol. Should i put my hands in and check her, or will she be in a bad mood? I heard don't handle them during shed but i didn't know and she acted the same duiring handling, but even w/o the signs i expected, the obvious cannot be denied in her cage. I know you gotta make sure it's al off and the eye caps are gone, but if I couldn't tell then, how will i be able to now about her eyes especially? I'm nervous, so anything you can tell me, it's 5am and everybody is asleep here. IDK if it's fine to handle her now and check her out, or what.. never been thru shed b4. THANKS! (PS- I JUST TOOK IT OUT AND IT IS IN PIECES, NOW I AM WORRIED. IDK IF I CAN TOUCH HER OR IF SHE WILL BE IN A BAD MOOD. HER EYES ARE A BLUE COLOR SO IDK IF HER EYE CAPS ARE OUT, IT'S 5 AM EVERYONE IS SLEEPING, EEEK!!!)

Hi! I hope everything is alright, I can see that it has been 6 hourse since you wrote me. I'm having a little difficulty completely understanding what it is your asking about, but the once the eyes go blueish and the rest of the snake gets this dull color, it usually takes something like 10 days, give or take. Sometimes that fase goes by very quickly and you may not have noticed it. After the eyes turn blue, they turn completely clear again, along with the body and then they shed. A good shed should be in one big piece, if it is in smaller pieces, that can be a sign of humidity being too low. It's not something to be all worried about if it happens once or twice, as long as all the shed gets off. It's a good thing not to handle them in shed, it can stress them, so your very right! If she has shed of the shed, you can easily handle her, she shouldn't be bother by it more than the usual. I hope I answered all your questions, please do write me again :-)

Hi Josser! Thank you so much for your videos. As a newbie, I'm addicted to them. OK, so my little rat snake is going through his first shed with us. He's 1 y/o and we've had him about 2 months. I was out of town and came home Friday and his eyes were all blue. So I don't know when it started. But he doesn't seem to be going through that phase after the blue eyes where it turns completely clear. He seems to have moved straight from blue eyes into shedding. I'm keeping the humidity up (70% at least) and giving him extra water to soak in. My questions are -- how long does the blue eyes phase last? And is it OK that he didn't clear up before starting to shed? Have you ever had to "help" a snake through a shed by soaking them or anything? Am I being way too overprotective??? THANK YOU!

So I have a 2yr Male blood python. Hr sheds faily well but his last shed was incomplete and I've noticed what looks like a hard shell on his tail but I'm not sure if it's normal or a result of an incomplete shed. I've tried removing it but he isn't reacting well to it and I'm not sure this is the right action to take. Even soaking hasn't loosened it up enough to remove it, if it even is removable.

So I have my first snake and he is a baby Darwin python. He is having his 2nd shed but first with me. It looks like there is a lot of shed from his bell to tail but none above, I thought it was weird so I gave him a soak, not for to long, but after the shed was really coming off, but not in one piece, I think maybe it was because I was handling him (I’m not gonna touch him till his done now) and maybe some rips happen. When he was sliding back in to his tank the shed was coming of on my hand on his tail and it came off all in one piece, I have looked at so many videos but nothing similar came up. What do you think this could be? What should I do? (Already misting his enclosure)

Jossers Jungle, I know this video was made a few months back but I have a question. I got a female pastel ball python a little over a month ago. She has started to shed about six days ago. Kasy Sibley I think usually when pbs are about to shed, or really any snake, it looks more dull and foggy and then can clear up. Usually shedding occurs within the next couple of days after the "clear up" I've heard it's very normal

Yeah. Snakes use rough and pointy objects in their enclosures to rub themselves on. So it's fairly normal for holes to appear because of that.

Is it important to keep the shed? I usually don't bother un-rolling the shed and throw it away. I can tell very quickly if it's a healthy shed or not.

Not at all, you can toss out right away :-)

Do I have to unroll the shed, is it necessary? I understand that I should know if it's a full shed or not but can I tell without unrolling? Also can I handle my snake during shed?

What happens if you handle a snake while its eyes are blue (pre-shed)? Will it cause a bad effect on the snake when it sheds?

Hi, I have a question. I have had my ball python for exactly a month now. He has eaten 3 times, pooped once, and seems to be very healthy and active. My humidity ranges between 50-70%. I read that ball pythons often shed every 3 weeks. But, it's been a whole month, and he has not shed at all or shown any signs of being in shed. Is it normal for them to go a while without shedding? He is still a baby by the way.

Can I move my snake to another container for Shedding?
@BaraPersson6 жыл бұрын
Hi my snake, has been perfectly fine and eating, pooping and now shedding. But this was his first shedd with me and now the day after he is overactive in his cage. Is this normal or is he now considered stressed? Because he has a heatmat with thermostat so his "hotspot" is the temperature he needs.

I got my snake yesterday and now she seems to start shedding. She got a bit grey eyes and the shed peels off a bit on her head.
