@Khail Kupsky Yes: I always lead with my right hand and I am right-handed. Lefties on a "normal" kit often just play like right-handed players or play the hi-hat with the left (like Will Kennedy). AND I believe in specializing: I don't need my hands to be able to do the same exact things. Guitarists don't start turning around their guitars just for the sake of flexibility 😊

I love seeing you play Jost, especially in a set where you guys are really making music on stage. I play in a small vintage funk/soul band and we always try to make music on stage and improvise where possible. One day I hope to feel so in control and relaxed behind the kit as you are. THnx for the inspiration!

Hey Jost, I am one of your biggest fan. You've inspired me so much with your drumming and your practice systems. I can't thank you enough for your drum videos and drum books. It motivates me to keep going and work even hard. I have a question which might sound really amateur to you but there is a reason why i'm asking it. Actually I have always been really analytical with my practice routine and i try not to waste any time in the practice room . Everything is pre determined before i step in the practice room and i try to be really efficient/effective with it. After doing this kind of practice for 3-4 hours everyday i feel really satisfied and i use rest of the time to play along to songs or listen to music. My question to you is that can you tell me how many hours of practice you do everyday(i know practice time doesn't matter much and efficiency matters but considering efficiency and effective practice has been take care of ). Can you divide your drumming journey into phases and tell how much you use to practice in different phases. for (example- how much did you practice when you started lessons with your first teacher , how much did you practice when you went to drummers collective, how much did you practice when you came up with your linear groove system and finally can you tell how much practice time is ideal practice time for a serious drummer) My main reason behind asking this question is that i want to know how your practice time has evolved over the period of years and also i'm really interested in knowing how many hours of practice does an internationally acclaimed insane drummer like you put in each and everyday. Waiting for your answer. Thank you so much Jost Nickel. you are my drum god and i hope to see you in person some day.

Hi Jost! Any info on if you have an thought out concept when playing triplet fills they way you do in the second bar which ends with the hihat stops? Combining HvvvvH with bass drum and toms etc. Sounds smooth and very cool :D That'd be the third bar at the start of the video. Found your fill book 😀

What's your monitoring situation? Wedge for the "oomph" behind you and rest of the mix on the in-ears? Also would be keen to know of the details of your in-ear mix. Thank you.
@JostNickel4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in-ears (UE11) plus a big wedge just for my bass drum. I have everything in my mix that I need to interact with the band. That means I don't need to hear keyboard pads too loud as they don't deliver any rhythmic info for me. Also, I am hearing the main vocals very clearly because I need to be tight with the singer!
@lucaleita4 жыл бұрын
I really like the fill that starts on the second bar!! Is it: RllrrL RllKRL RllKRL KRLK(final kick with right hand crash) so it ends on the 4 AND? I tried to figure it out.. so good Jost!

Please dont let rudiments intimidate you as a new drummer, if you learn drums and you are already doing a form of rudiments already. My first how to drum video in the 90s, the guy did so many rudiments, i was downloading them years later fealing frustrated, but some pay off, hehe.. If you learn by ear, thats ok too!
