Hingis was incredible for such a small person but it's her tennis I.q that kept her in the game. She read the game so well there are not much ppl that understands tennis like Hingis. A lot of players succeed with raw power but when it comes to tennis intelligence Hingis was way above average!

I never watched these great tennis players in their early days . Venus was hot and full of vitality in those days. Hinges was a quiet and very skillful player. It's a shame we couldn't see much of her in The singles in the later years.

I remembered those days when Hingis, Venus, Serena, Capriati & Davenport were on top of their games. These 4 Americans V,S,C,&D made it very difficult for Hingis both mentally and physically and that forced Hingis to retire at a young age.

This match is a perfect example of how Venus (or Serena) stacked up against Hingis. When you really look at it, they beat themselves more often than Hingis beat them. Hingis was great at anticipation and redirecting the ball, and I’m not trying to diminish her accomplishments at all, but a lot of her victories came in part because Venus/Serena hit so many unforced errors. It’s because of Venus’ unforced errors here that a third set even happened.
@charliez077
@charliez077 5 жыл бұрын
well yeah but unforced errors/consistency are key parts of tennis, Kvitova is one of the top examples - unbeatable when peaking, terrible when the opposite (tho luckily she has gotten more consistent since her hand injury)

Wow. Venus is never this emotional, ever!! She and Serena clearly didn't have much time for Hingis Venus's movement and ball strikingwere perfect. Martina was a master of wrong footing and just leaving you flat-footed on court. Thanks for sharing this nugget of history.

You can see why Hingis struggled with the Williams sisters! She wasn't willing to introduce POWERPLAY in her game! While other players started hiring legends like Pat Etcheberry to follow up with the evolving game, Hingis remained stagnant and ultimately that led to her retirement! Her basic strokes were waaay too short and too little spin. The only thing that kept her alive was her amazing ability to 'read' the players'shotchoice....

At times Venus can spray, but I don't think she has a technical problem with the forehand. At times shot selection is not the best. Yes, it is a good idea to go there instead of the backhand because her backhand is her favorite, but you don't just sit on the forehand... that is just silly.

On days like this, her forehand was lethal even back then. She crushed Hingis from back of the court wit h it. This match should have been a 6-2 6-3 dusting but she got nervous on those match points. Nothing Hingis could do with her on this day.

I wish Hingis did not change her raquet she was more powerful with a thin beamed heavy racquet her serve had more weight on it. What she needed was to improve her fitness level here it was below than venus. I wonder if she did not sway away from tjin beams to bigger wider tennis racquets I think she would have played better, her slices dropshots would be more effective given the characteristics of thin beamed racquets.

Hingis was the worst tennis player in terms of honesty and humility i have ever seen. She showed a lot of disrespect against Graff( Rolland Garros) and Venus ( USOpen).Because of this, I became trully disapointed with her.
