I just went to the downtown library a little bit away from my school and I checked-out What is the What and James Baldwin's Collected Essay's. You inspired me to read more because I use to read a lot of book, but they were more urban/hip hop novels rather than books than can shape my mind.

Thank you for making this video, watching this has literally gotten me out of bed and into a great mood. It's exactly what I needed to see! I've lived in the white suburban cities of Arizona my whole life, literally being the only black person in each of my classes. Being that my mom is from the rough city of Gary, I knew that it was a blessing to have that opportunity to be in a great educational system. Yet, I was still deprived of so much of my culture that I honestly didn't know how or where to start on my journey to achieve such a sense of self and history. I've always loved reading but never knew what would be interesting and what would be the best one to start with. Now I know I will start with The Prince. Based off your description it's exactly what I need to read, I want to take control of my life. I'm 21 years old, I just moved to town to attend a university here in Az. With that I've been so consumed in being better or being more than where I came from. For me to do that, I felt that I needed to do everything. So at this point I'm a full time student with two jobs taking the responsibility of not only taking care of myself but my younger sister(20 y.o.) who moved here with me. With all the stress I'm managing but I'm still not controlling my life, I'm letting it be controlled by all the things I have around me. So this year I will control my life and I will pick up The Prince to start redirecting my life. Thank you again!

Hey! You're the winner of the giveaway! You should definitely read the Prince, it will help you take control and maybe read the Alchemist before you read the Prince, it's much easier to read as the language is more modern. But I'm sending you Temple of My Familiar! So message me with your mailing address & guarantee that you'll read it sometime this year :)

Pretty amazing list Jouelzy! Thanks for sharing. Like you, I have too many to claim a favorite. I do find myself picking up my copy of Winesberg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson from time to time. A collection of short stories that take place in the small town. I'm interested in picking up two from your list - Linden Hills, Temple of My Familiar. I own The Prince and The Celestine Prophecies already. Happy New Year!!

Long awaited video!! Lol My fav book of all time is The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne!! I love stories that "tug on your heart strings" and it's a great classic story! The only book I've read on your list is The Kite Runner (AP English) and I loved it! I'm currently reading The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks (author of The Notebook) and it's two amazing love stories in one! I have heard about Makeba before and I am definitely likely to pick it up! Thanks for the great list!

My favorite book is 20 something 20 everything by Christine Hassler. It breaks down the quarter life crisis that women in their 20s face. As a recent college graduate who thought she had it all figured out (career, personal, and life in general lol) I was incredibly shocked to find out that life wasn't at all how I had envisioned it. I thought I would graduate, get a phenomenal job, live in NYC and have this "perfect" life. But when it didn't go as planned I panicked and in many ways felt like a failure. This book has been an essential resource for me as it has helped me to realize that success is not linear. The twist and turns in the road to the future are what ultimately shapes who we are.

My favourite book is Winter's Bone by Daniel Woodrell. I read it upon encountering the film with Jennifer Lawrence which was really great and when I read the book it took it to another level. It's a book that I just keep coming back to. I'm a young black girl who has been afforded many opportunities and you'd think me and Ree Dolly couldn't be farther apart (which is true) but the sacrifices she makes for her family, what's right and her untainted courage are breathtaking. I feel like I'm there with her and her when I'm reading the book and the language and the phrases he comes up with are just astounding. It's an amazing example of turning the bleak into thought-provoking art. I think I'm most likely to read Just Above My Head as I am a big James Baldwin fan, (I love Giovanni's Room!) and I just adore the way he writes and the way he puts things. Really enjoyed this video and reading some of the comments i love hearing what people's favourites are!

I want to read James Baldwin, I've read so many of his quotes and I feel like I could only grow with him. I read the kite runner and adored it, to be transported to Afghanistan and learn about the culture is pretty amazing. Just wanna say what you said regarding black people and the difficulty we have in taking seriously any profession not 'conservatively popular' such as Arts really resounds with me. I've always wondered why. I guess being the underdogs we hold on to what we know will get us far and help us reach success and I just think it so brave when a black person does the uncommon. And it's something I hope I can pass to the future generation, that it's okay to want more than to be an accountant or lawyer or doctor.

One of the books I read this year that was good is called "King Peggy" an African born woman living in the DC area becomes king of her hometown. It is a very inspirational as a woman to see her transfer into a king, but also live her normal life in the states and how she served her kingdom and changed things around for the betterment of her people. I haven't read any books in your list, but I am interested in all the books! I would start with your first recommendation"Just above my head"

I haven't read any of the books on your list but I'm interested in both Bailey's Cafe and Linden Hills by Gloria Naylor! Love your channel & hope I win!! ♡

Hi Jouelzy! Brooklyn Public Library woop woop! Lol, ok so my fave book is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I love this book because not only does it open your eyes to some rules and facts of life that no one necessarily teaches you, but it makes you reflect on your own life and experiences as you read along. That's what it did for me at least. This book is so encouraging for the young person seeking guidance in this big world, and also keys of wisdom for the older indiv. making a new path in their life. So I have read the Kite Runner in high school in my AP English class, but never picked it back up. So I'll more than likely revisit that one, and I just went into Google PLAY and got the ecopy of The Prince. Yaaaaaas! Women who read and write are dangerous! Thanks for sharing girl!!

You are so wise. I'm 20 and look up to you so much. Thanks for this video. My favorite book is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. I love this book because it portrays what every young woman seeks. Love. It shows the struggle it takes to get that love. What a young woman had to go through before God sent her someone to protect and love her. It made me realize that love is sweet but the path to it is bitter. I've never read any if those books but I'm very interested in reading the Chicken heads one. Sounds empowering. I'm gonna read all those books though. That one is just first.

I have read a few of the books you reviewed and will very likely read those that I have not. While I don't have a favorite book there are few I have recently read that were good. Unfortunate Son and The Life of Ptolembly Grey are both by Walter Mosely and good books. Also Empty Mansions which is a book about Hugette Clark the millionaire that died a few years ago in NYC was also a good one. Kinda long but gave a ton of info about her life. I could go on forever as I tend to read books or listen to audio books back to back. Thanks for sharing your list....off to the library I go!

I truly enjoyed this video; I watched the whole thing LOL! It's hard to pick one fav book so I'll just share the first one that came to mind - some love, some pain, some time by j california cooper. When I read it about 15-20 years ago I was just beginning to stretch myself as a reader and this book was so different from what I'd read previously. It was also the first selection for a book club I started (well before Oprah made book clubs popular!) I plan to tackle your most of your recommendations as part of my new year's reading list. I plan to start with What is the What unless of course I win The Temple of My Familiar. Happy New Year to all!

My favorite book is actually A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (I was excited when you mentioned The Kite Runner, which I've also read). I love this book because it focuses on the different relationships between women in Afghanistan, especially during a time when women had very limited rights. The book is also very interesting when you compare this culture to other cultures (I went in-depth with this since I had to read this in my sophomore year of high school. I would also read What is the What by Dave Eggers.

Hi Jouelzy! Gosh my favorite book changes every time I pick up a new one lol ... My current favorite is a light one: The 10 women you be before you're 35 by Alison James...I'm a big sister to a few young women (teenage to early 20's) and I like this one because it's a simplistic, light-hearted way of saying, 'girl just live your life'!! I have not read any of the books on your list, but I'm very interested in the giveaway or course, and I think I'm going to order 'The Prince'. It sounds like a myth buster type of read. Thanks for sharing your interests - I definitely need to step my book game up.

My favorite book is Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel and I love it because I want to be a chef (I'll be attending Johnson&Wales in the fall) and the main character Tita's uses cooking as her escape from the harsh reality that she will never marry the man she loves (who loves her as well) or bear his children but instead her sister will this is something I relate to in the sense of using food and flavor as away to convey emotion in a strong manner which is deeply ingrained in my life choices as well as how the book has a very subtle mystical sci-fi twist to it that is not as harsh as other fictions it is also one of the few books I've read multiple times

My favorite book is Roots by Alex Haley. Growing up as a black person I always had a curiosity about racism, slavery and Africa. I wanted to know why blacks were treated the way we were. Nobody could answer these questions for me. I read Roots in the 10th grade and it unlocked so many of my questions and was the starting point of my quest for learning Pan African history. Roots is beautifully written and when you boil it down, it's not really a story about slavery. It's a story about the bonds of family.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is currently my favorite book. It's so beautifully written. His writing style is very subtle and nothing is overdone. You had me at Baldwin! :) I have not read every work of his, but most. My favorite author as of late, hands down is Walter Mosley. That brother can create magic in any genre of storytelling. I must confess that I have not read anything by your girl Alice Walker...Still there!?!lol I'm more of a Toni Morrison kinda guy, but one day soon I promise to read one of her novels. I do own a public library card as well.:). HEY, I Just had a great ideal...YOU COULD JUST GIVE MEEEE THAT THERE COPY YOU OWN!! You know...Cut out the middle man. What-da-ya-say?

I don't have a favorite book as of yet but I am currently reading the Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I know I'm probably late on jumping on the bandwagon of this book but it's been a great read thus far. I'm trying to fall back into my love of reading especially now since I'm on winter break from school.

My favorite book is The Stranger by Albert Camus. The existential themes and the simple lesson that you must make choices before you can gain moral value lies in the simple narrative. It's so beast.

My favorite book is Elaine Brown A taste of Power. It was the first book I've read fully and it gave me insight on the women of the Black Panther party. In high school, I was a huge BBP stan. I will be reading all of the. But first would be the Celestine book. Really big on the law of attraction at the moment.

My favorite book would have to be The Coldest Winter Ever. It's like one of the greatest "coming of age" books on the market. And kind of gave me an insight into that drug world as so many other books have and really taught me that I ain't about that life lol. I've also read Kite Runner because it was on our reading list in high school. And I thought I would hate it because, I mean, who wants to read the books on the reading list? But it was a really good read! I actually own it so that means I really love it! The book that I'm probably going to read first is When The Chickenhead Comes To Roost. Sounds like a really good book so I'm going to check the library! Thanks for the recommendations!

I have read the kite runner and I agree, was a really good book and much better than the movie. I think I would read 'when chicken heads come home to roost' 'the prince' and that play that you mentioned. Thanks for the video! I resolved to read more in 2014 and this is a great place to start.

I love A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, it is a beautifully written book that showcases life as an Afghan woman, I just ordered several of the books based on your recommendations. I think you should do this as a tag to other youtubers.

I don't want to be entered I just want to say I love your explanation of some of the books. I read a few and I have been trying to make it my business to read the 48 laws and I have been reading laws of attraction and powers of positive thinking and I have been looking for new books. I am picking up or shall I say downloading those books as we speak that I haven't read. Thank you for posting this video. May I suggest you do one possibly every couple of months I know you're busy but if you come across or read any or someone suggests any to you I think it will benefit to share especially about feminism. Many women don't truly grasp what being a feminist is nor do they have good portrayal of such. Again thank you for uploading this!

no prob love. Hope you enjoy the books. I think The Prince is a much easier & more beneficial read than 48 Laws, but folks are just caught up in the hype.

*added to kindle* the prince I heard was good. I really look forward to more of these videos. I think with how articulate you are as well as uncut and not filtered it gives an air of culture. many times women feel If they are beautiful they don't have to be smart and vice versa. people think it has to be either or and we need more representation of the diversity in ourselves. Love it!

My favorite book is Their Eyes Were Watching God. It was the first book I read from the Black Renaissance era. Growing up in suburbia, you have to teach yourself about black American history. Especially living in Texas. I went on to read most of Zora Neal Hurston's other novels as well. On your list, I plan to read Lindin Hills and When Chickenheads Come home to roost. Thank you again for this list!!
