Can You Imagine?

For example, what the trees do
not only in lightning storms
or the watery dark of a summer’s night
or under the white nets of winter
but now, and now, and now - whenever
we’re not looking. Surely you can’t imagine
they don’t dance, from the root up, wishing
to travel a little, not cramped so much as wanting
a better view, or more sun, or just as avidly
more shade - surely you can’t imagine they just
stand there loving every
minute of it, the birds or the emptiness, the dark rings
of the years slowly and without a sound
thickening, and nothing different unless the wind,
and then only in its own mood, comes
to visit, surely you can’t imagine
patience, and happiness, like that.

예를 들어, 나무들이 무얼 하는지
번개 폭풍이 휘몰아칠 때나
여름밤 물기를 머금은 어둠 속에서나
겨울의 흰 그물 아래서만이 아니라
지금, 그리고 지금, 그리고 지금-언제든
우리가 보고 있지 않을 때.
물론 넌 상상할 수 없지
나무들은 그저 거기 서서
우리가 보고 있을 때 보이는 모습으로 있다는 걸
물론 넌 상상할 수 없지
나무들은, 조금만 여행하기를 소망하며,
뿌리부터 온몸으로,
춤추지 않는다는 걸,
갑갑해하며 더 나은 경치, 더 많은 햇살,
아니면 더 많은 그늘을
원하지 않는다는 걸
물론 넌 상상할 수 없지 나무들은 그저
거기 서서 매 순간을, 새들이나 비어 있음을,
천천히 소리 없이 늘어가는 검은 나이테를,
마음에 바람이 불지 않는 한
아무것도 달라질 게 없음을
사랑한다는 걸,
물론 넌 상상할 수 없지
인내, 그리고 행복, 그런 걸.
