He knew they were suspects and used his ego about being the favorite on Sodor as a cover so that two engines he didn’t trust or know in the first place would tell him what he needs to know about where to find his friend. In short, he just wanted to search for clues, take Thomas and go back home and this scene proves that in one of his shining moments

Not to say Thomas is completely boring but he’s much better in his original mischievous personality than his token nice guy™️ one. James on the other hand is way more entertaining because of how flawed he is as an individual and how he reacts to everything like working on thomas’ line for a bit or realizing he’s got a scratch. I’d totally watch a feature length special of James just reacting to things he comes across during his day (like a longer version of a hard day’s work)

Journey beyond sodor explained: At sodor james complained he was sir toppham hats favourite and 1 day he had to take a goods train to the mainland. Thomas got the train early and left. This made james cross. Thomas got lost and he ran into a crane named Beresford. Beresford dropped a boat infront of thomas which got him stuck but thomas had a solution and went under Beresford, and passed him. Next he makes it to a yard where he meets 2 engines, Theo and Lexi. They are experimental. Thomas got filled up with coal and water and he set off. Then he made it to the Steelworks. He met frankie and hurricane there. They showed thomas the *Hottest place in town* and hurricane took thomas’s goods train for him. But in return they made thomas work there for eternity. Thomas didnt want this and after a few days when the 2 engines were sleeping thomas broke the gate open , thinking he could escape but he failed. Then a few days went by and thomas saw a place where he could sneak out and he set off. He hid in the woods and he met Merlin there. Merlin is another experimental engine and he taught thomas how to be invisible. Then after waiting thomas was trying to get back to sodor, and he ended up in the yard with lexi and theo again. They have a good time there and as Thomas was about to leave he saw merlin. He met merlin well but he had to go and he also ran into beresford on the way. Beresford lifted thomas up and said hr just wanted to be friends. Thomas and beresford became friends and after that, they saw frankie and hurricane. Beresford hid thomas over the lake and they also saw james so thomas and the experimentals went to the steelworks to get james back, who fell in the same trap. They try to escape but thomas almost died but hurricane saved him and hurricane burned his wheels. After that merlin saves hurricane and the experimentals now work with frankie and hurricane, and at the end not only did hurricanes wheels get fixed, but james and thomas went back to sodor.

Frankie’s redemption was unearned, crying until she got her way with having more help. I would’ve probably ended it with Hurricane’s wheels melting and Frankie ramming into him so that they’re both out of commission and are defeated while Thomas and the others scram back to Sodor (Future development for the experimental engines). Of course, all this would happen without Hurricane having his heroic moment by saving Thomas (the outcome he would’ve had coming to him by causing trouble along with Frankie and the first place)
