it's one of the most unique and tasteful tones i have ever heard, i could listen to it for hours as if it were the original song.

This bass line lifts this song so much…. Impossible to overstate it’s contribution to the success of the song.

The bass often gets lost among other instruments, this sounds beautiful.

thanks for sharing this, very helpful. I have to learn this for my covers band. the bass is difficult to hear on the original underneath the keyboard and guitars.

He is playing an Ovation Magnum 2. It has its own unique sound. I THINK this is the only song that he recorded with it.

I don't think so. The Ovation Magnum Bass this was recorded on had some unique (at the time) features, one of which was a neck/bridge/both switch. If you check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpfHdpKed6Zlq7c at 2:54 you can hear the audible click as they switch between pickup settings. I think bassist Ross Valory switched from bridge in the pre-chorus to both pickups in the chorus to add a bit of heft and drive.

This is definitely a Journey version (most likely the main recording) because you can hear the other parts in the phasing and not many people play Steve’s part exact.
