The Journey of a Night Time - 100 subscriber special
This wasn't filmed as a 100 subscriber special video, but it seems quite fitting.
A journey up the West Highland Line on the Caledonian Sleeper has been on the bucket list for quite some time.
Traction was in the form of a GBRf class 92 and a class 73/9 from Edinburgh Waverley. Considering the little 73 was built as bi-mode loco for London's commuter lines, it cope admirably with the harsh weather and gradients of the West Highland Line, providing faultless running and better still, ETH.
The snow was at its worse over Rannoch moor, where many deer can be seen on lower ground near the line, probably wondering why some idiot was filming out the window of a 30mph train in the freezing winter in the Scottish Highlands.
The staff on the train were wonderful and I really want to do it all again, I would recommend to anyone.
If you are travelling on the sleeper leaving Preston or Carlisle, you must book your tickets for the day after. This is because technically you board the train early the next morning. I made a mistake and luckily was let on and I believe Sleeper are changing their website to make this clear.

My wife and I did this trip about 18 months ago from London Euston but in the early summer. A fantastic journey. Everybody should put it on their bucket list. Would like to do the London to Inverness next but in the winter.

The little Class 73 Electro-Diesel locomotive appears to be very much the master of its load on the tightly-curved and heavily-graded West Highland Line! Just a shame that there's no Third Rail from which it could pull its accustomed 3,200 Amps DC @ 850 Volts.

Astonishing videoing there..i was born in Penzance and have done the Cornish sleeper a few times and would like to do Caledonian but think Ill take it in summer months!..too cold for a Cornishman up there!

Nah, gotta have a snowy scene as well! Did the Inverness run in the snow in April, but they have put Mk5s on the sleeper services now so I doubt I will be doing it again anyway.

Thanks for video , these coaches have been replaced with new stock run by Serco ,the Serco ones mk5s are crap , noisy , riddled with problems and generally a rubbish service all brought to you via The Scittish govt who had to change for changes sake , a beautiful journet not remotely enhanced by politicians and their stupidity .

When did you take the trip? It seems to me that April 2018 could be too warm for snow to remain on ground? Pardon my ignorance, I am a true blooded Aussie!!

It's very cold indeed in the north of Scotland and there's nothing at all unusual in seeing heavy falls of snow on the ground in April. Rannoch Moor is a long way above sea level and average temperatures drop by 1 degree Centigrade with every 100 feet of altitude!

That was a waste of 10 minutes of my life. A train travelling through a snowy landscape. It was a sleeper!!!!! What about the accommodation - the facilities - the dining car - the food???
