Yes. He kept practicing and taking lessons. Even just one year later during Escape tour, his playing had improved a notch. Rare combinations of finesse and power, technique and improvisation.

Steve Smith's solo's in the 80"s were so great. It seems drummers today just play really fast double bass but there's no rhythm of feel ! Steve Smith is the GOAT !

I thought the same thing when I saw him in Philly on the Escape tour. Never could figure out what he was playing in that "flurry" but it was awesome to see.

Since the late 90's he sounds like a complete different drummer, I much more prefer his style in the 80's through mid 90's before he shaved his head and turned into more jazzier drummers, his old style has more beef and intuitive touch both on playing rock and fusion.

awesome steve smith on drums, can someone tell me if this drum solo is just a solo, or is part of a song, as well as songs that contain drum solos such as: movidick by led zeppelin or tnuc by grand funk rairoad ?, and in which country did such an event happen, finally, if you confirm to which year this solo event belongs. Thank you for your valuable contributions to this required information.

Ok I just gotta say it. He’s playing matched grip here. Why on earth did he switch to that traditional grip nonsense a year or two later? Yes I know he’s a jazz drummer by training. But even then this concept that one must play traditional to play jazz is absurd. Yes I’m aware some of the greatest drummers like Rich and weckl played traditional. Still doesn’t make it optimal. No reason whatsoever for that grip other than being taught that way as a kid.
