How do you safely relocate 138 potentially dangerous animals, including tigers, bears, cougars, and monkeys? With a lot of help.
The exotic wildlife family of rescued animals at Peace River Refuge & Ranch was facing the ominous threat of urban encroachment upon their home. After 14 years in Zolfo Springs, FL, refuge founders Lisa and Kurt Stoner, made plans to relocate 150 miles away in the Ocala National Forest, near Silver Springs. Forest Animal Rescue would be their new name.
Following three years of preparation, 48 dedicated volunteers gathered for the move. The four day event was coordinated as an evacuation training exercise. Included were highly trained animal disaster responders, seven different emergency response groups, seasoned volunteers, and expert medical and veterinary personnel.
