Nice video! But don't forget to remove the "mill glaze" before staining, either by adding oxalic acid or by a low-pressure power wash. This will allow the new wood to receive the stain properly

Does everyone have a building to store PT lumber so it drys out away from the weather? If not, having it outdoors will cause it to get rained on or snowed on so how does wood dry in those environments?!!!
@templebuilderscarpentry7043
@templebuilderscarpentry7043 Жыл бұрын
You don't need a building for PT lumber to dry out from the weather, though it would be helpful. Do you live in a area where it rains and snow's everyday. If you do then I suggest KILN-DRIED PT lumber it's more expensive but less wait time. You can start building with the PT lumber (for example a deck) but it's recommended you wait before painting because of how deep the chemicals penetrate into the wood fibers. Normal weather will not prevent PT lumber from reaching below 20 percent moisture content. Once your lumber is below 20 percent moisture content and it gets rained on before you get a chance to paint, wait approximately one week before painting (use a moisture meter for accuracy).

Thanks for commenting, and instead of needing a building us a inexpensive Tarp and stack the PT lumber on blocks.

I hired a painter to paint my fence of pressure treated pine. The builder told me to wait one year before painting it. I waited one year and a month. Within two months of him painting it the fence started peeling. I told the painter and he said that he just found out that that type of wood will not take any type of primer, paint or stain. He said that he will reapply it but it peel again. I don't think this guy did the job right. I saw him spray two coats of primer/sealer only. First off, one year is amply time for the wood to dry, Second he should have put one coat of primer/sealer....then two coats of latex paint. Also, the primer should be engineered for use on pressure treated wood. Am I right? Thoughts?
@templebuilderscarpentry7043
@templebuilderscarpentry7043 2 жыл бұрын
You can paint pressure treated pine though it is more difficult than untreated wood. One year and a month seems to be ample amount of time for the treated wood to dry out, but there are exceptions depending on climate and humidity.So if the treated lumber was fully dry ,before the painter primed your fence he should have cleaned the fence thoroughly removing dust,dirt and chemicals from the surface allowing the primer and paint to better adhere. However if you clean the fence(I recommend soapy water and brush)you will have to wait a few more weeks for the fence to dry again. Once the fence is dry this time apply one coat of primer 2 coats of latex paint. P.s thank you for your comment.
@zadok22
@zadok22 Жыл бұрын
He should have removed the "mill glaze" first off of the wood by cleaning or adding a deck brightener which prepares the wood to receive the stain. Improper application by homeowners and contractors is one of the biggest complaints in the deck stain industry. Also, the proper dry time as suggested.

How is drying pressure treated lumber even possible if it is kept outside? It rains or snows over the period of 12 months over the entire US so unless you are storing all your lumber inside a large building, it will not get completely dry!!!

I've painted a PT exterior threshold/ landing on my backdoor. It's been there for 5 yrs now and it still won't accept paint. It's been primed, sanded and re-primed and sanded and primed again and painted. I think it's the VOC compliant/ weak paint that we're forced to buy today based on EPA regs. Long story short...paint ain't what it used to be! We just have to learn to live with it

I was in the paint business for 42 years and I would tell customers this information time and time again. Some listened. Some didn't and had failures. I told customers to wait at least 60 days to paint P/T. If you wanted to paint or stain it right away use standard non treated lumber. The last thing was to stain, not paint.

Can the treated woods sit in the garage to dry until it meet the required temperature to paint before building? By doing this, at least I have a coat of paint in those hidden spots before constructing.

@@templebuilderscarpentry7043 I also heard that if leave treated wood to sit for a long time, they will start to twist and warp. Can you clarify this? This is my concern because I’m in the middle between these rumors.
@templebuilderscarpentry7043
@templebuilderscarpentry7043 2 ай бұрын
I suggest you get a moisture meter. Moisture content should be no more than 19%. If you paint the lumber too early and the Moisture content is too high, the paint could peel. Also, the lumber still has to dry out, and this stage is where a lot of warping could happen because the paint is preventing the lumber from drying properly. How long to wait depends on your location. To save you all this trouble, buy KDAT. Kiln dried after treatment. You don't have to wait. Thanks for commenting.

@templebuilderscarpentry7043

PT. Lumber should be completely dry before applying oil for best results. There is another type of pressure treated called (KDAT) Kiln dried after treatment. KDAT is already dry once you purchase it. I can never find any at my local Home Depot. Wet pressure treated lumber takes anywhere from 1-6 months to dry depending on location. Thanks for commenting.

@templebuilderscarpentry7043
@templebuilderscarpentry7043 4 ай бұрын
Another option is KDAT (Kiln dried after treatment). With this, you don't have to wait months .but it's not in Home Depot . If you don't mind waiting the 3 to 6 months, then the ideal place to store your lumber would be under a roof . If you don't have this option, then buy a tarp and cover your wood , keeping it off the ground. Also, I would buy a moisture meter. Normally, the contractor will build a deck out of pressure treated and then advise the customer to wait 3 to 6 months before painting on staining regardless of rain storms. Thanks for commenting.

Regular pressure treated lumber from big box stores like home Depot or Lowe's is still wet, and it usually takes about 3 to 6 months before it's ready to paint depending on your location. You can build your project with this wet lumber, but I would tell the customer to wait on painting it. There is another type of pressure treated lumber called ( KDAT ) kiln dried after treatment.. You can build your project and paint it right after. That's if you're able to find it at your local lumber yard. My home Depot and Lowes doesn't supply it. Sometimes I have a hard time getting it. Before I watched this video I painted the pressure treated wood. It didn't take the paint very well. I live in SW Florida and it is very humid. Would I be wrong in removing the paint by sanding? Would it be able to dry out? The project has been built already. Thanks.
@templebuilderscarpentry7043
@templebuilderscarpentry7043 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t suggest sanding pressure treated lumber because the end quality of the finished product becomes unpredictable and the pressure treated lumber has chemicals in the wood that I wouldn’t want to ingest; However, it can be done with a respirator though it is difficult . Given that you’ve already painted the wood, allow the pressure treated lumber to fully dry and hopefully you won’t have any deformities in the wood . Since you are in an area that is high in humidity, it will take the lumber longer to dry. Once the wood is dry if the paint is damaged (chipping,peeling,flaking)I would scrape the surface and then clean it with soap and water using a nylon bristle brush and let it dry from 1-3 weeks. Then, apply 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of latex paint( If you decide to follow these steps I recommend getting a quality primer and paint).
