Like the form bolt, not many know of it. I carried (retired now) a 5/8 with oversized washers . . helped in mis-aligned holes. Good stuff, rock on brother!

Thank You for the heads up Man. Point takin...today was my first day. Decking up high. Stuffs no joke. I was a active duty soldier for 10 years and this messed me up to realize that people constructing the buildings are of a different breed. That alone puts lead in my pencil. I'm hooked, no joke. Be easy...

A six inch c clamp is mighty handy for welding and where's your chisel? Also, have a old piece of a leather welding glove hanging from your hood to cover your neck from the arc flash. Any serious welder needs one or you'll slowly cook your adam's apple. RD local 25 Detroit

Just go to the local hall, dnt worry about getting tooled up first thing. You’ll have some time going through your orientation to take care of all that. And thank you for your service, that’ll help get you through the door too. You won’t regret it man.

Helmets to hardhats reference letter is the legal way to get into the hall without testing, but IWs love veterand. It's worth it bro.

Not sure where you are from. I've never heard a sleever bar called a "cheater bar", a sliding beam anchor or beamer called a "beam clamp" (beam clamp generally refers to a clamp that side loads a beam or joist with a peice of all thread, usually used by mechanical trades to hang duct, pipe, etc), the coarse thread bolt is a quickie bolt, and since 1988, when I entered the trade, we were taught to never weld anything to your beater (a hammer is used by carpenters) or any other tool, as it weakens it. I work on the east coast, might be regional, but our apprenticeship books are issued by the international, and those are terms used all over North America.

Beater heads are rather large forgings so no risk welding a nut to one (anyone suitably bored can try destructive testing like inserting bar of choice into nut then doing rude things to it). The welding warning is likely because some dumbass (there's always one...) did it wrong (like welding to something cast due to not knowing the difference). Tacking a nut won't anneal the strike face of a beater head which would take enough heat to set the handle afire. WPS for welding forged steel (like welding pipe to a forged valve) are common so if in doubt ask an experienced weldor or inspector.

you were right about everything except weakening a beater

Hey I’m going down to the ironworkers next week. What is a good tool belt for ironworking?
@MrTimjames3434 жыл бұрын
I pretty much use Klein for belt and leather
@richarddaniels27543 жыл бұрын
Have a leather shop make you up a four inch wide belt with a two hook buckle. It'll fit on your hips real nice and comfy plus the added support for your back. Thirty years in the trade, it's the best.

Is there much difference with welding when it come to steel vs iron?
@HogOnWelding2 жыл бұрын
Iron is steel but you do have Aluminum and Stainless which is different different Alloys and techniques
@jasonastevens82202 жыл бұрын
When ironworkers refer to iron, it’s just another way of saying steel. They don’t really mean iron like wrought iron or cast

"Bull pin." The other one was a "barrel pin." While we're at it: "sleever bar" "beater" "speed bolt" "tie-off choker and beamer" "tool lanyards" "scabbard" or "pig ear" "rod sock" or "rod pouch" and "bolt bag". You should pound a lock washer onto that bar so you can wear it on your belt.
