Haider was right from the very beginning and there was no massive influx of migrants in his days as there is today. He was a pioneer of healthy, national, and most importantly, reasonable migration politics back then 18 years ago. Had he lived today, he would be even more popular in Austria. Ridiculous how life changes within a blink of an eye

If I decide to move to another country, I would consider I am a guest there. I would learn their language and adhere to their customs. I would not expect them to adopt mine. That just seems to be respectful. My grandparents came to America. My father had to learn English in school. I speak English. Maybe it takes three generations? But we never expected everyone here to become Poles, nor have we ever forgotten our heritage. What's wrong with that?

This is a documentary from 2000? As an Austrian, I'd say the immigration issue is as pressing as ever. 24 years wasted that could've been spent on action.

11:12 Hundreds of thousands of migrants, mostly Muslim men, have come to Austria in recent years. And anti-Semitism has risen sharply. And who is responsible for this? The Austrians are not. In this respect, closed borders would have helped the Jews a lot. But they were pro-immigration. Live with it now!

I can see somewhat why he didn't like Slovenes (as me being one myself), cause we have similar problems with Croatians, Serbs, Bosnians and especially Albanians. But to be fair! Do you know of a Slovenian who lives in Austria, doesn't work hard, doesn't KNOW GERMAN (even the bloody dialect) and doesn't celebrate Austrian holidays etc.? I am also aware, we seem to be difficult to distinguish from other Balkan people (ouch, but okay), since we are Slavs... So, being Austrian means you are Bavarian or German in general? Kinda the same thing, you see. Slovenes and Austrians, we are the same thing. We held back Italians for you in WW1. :D We just happen to speak Slovenian, WHICH is the only Slavic language with so many German words in it. Yes, we did join Yugoslavia, which eventually was a stone dragging us down, "a region" of 2 mill people simply cannot feed the other 21 million. Our small size is a bit of an issue, but we are improving: pays are still low compared to yours, but they are getting better annualy. It was a bummer Nazis didn't store gold and art within our banks... *caugh* Swiss *caug* Luxemburg *caugh* :D

“I can see somewhat why he didn’t like Slovenes, cause we have similar problems with Croatians, Serb, Bosnians and especially Albanians.” Can you elaborate on that? In what way are the Slovenes to Austria like the other Balkan people you named to Slovenia? For the rest, you have to understand where Haider comes from. Originally, he used to be a German nationalist, so in that view, Austrians are in fact Germans and Austria should be for German (speaking) Austrians. This ideology played a role in his politics in Carinthia, even later in his career. The “Ortstafelstreit” (political fight whether signs should also be in Slovenian in Carinthia) is a result of this view. He didn’t hate ethnic Slovenes for specific reasons. Not that I like or agree with Haider. In my opinion, indigenous Slovenes in Austria deserve all the recognition they need. I disagree with Haider that Austrians are generally Germans. We are Germans, Slovenes, Croatians and Hungarians. I didn’t know there are some German words in Slovenian, mind giving examples? I am curious.
@ivan000019839 ай бұрын
Croats won their independence through blood and steel, Slovenes haven't had a day of war or economic hardship after the downfall of Yugoslavia. Slovenes would have gotten ran over by a half of Serbian invading force. Croatia absorbed all of their hegemony for decades during Yugoslavia and beaten them in war. As a Croat I don't give flying f. for Slovenia, I have my own company and work for civilized non-racist western clients and have 8500 EUR income monthly. As for you desperately trying to be "austrian" is co cringy and servile, there was even a saying (which I don't approve of) calling Slovenes "stable keepers of Vienna", just so you know if you belittle other nations, others can do that to you too, there are primitives everywhere, and they regularly tend to be nationalist bigots. As if your fake "austrianism" is going to make you more intelligent, productive or richer - it is laughable. Learning to do complex jobs, getting educated, earning money etc. has nothing to do with nationality, it has to do with personal talent, ambition, and socio-economic opportunity.

We austrian people are no rassists. The most refugees that comes to us they live their own tradition life and are not interrested in our tradition and they get money from the working austrian people every month, most of them dont want and dont have to work. They get nice apartments, money for their children, free education, free health care. All is free for them. That's the reason why we are not amused about migrants. Someone who comes to our country and has a job and pay the Bill's himself is absolutely welcome.

Nice sequence of segues there: 'compare Haider to Hitler', 'hear Haider say "we want Democracy" (which the EU can't / won't provide), and then change the subject to anti-Semitism under Hitler. I mean...don't hide your bias or anything, will you? Oh, and Haider is dead. The reportage is therefore a little weak, isn't it? What's the point of posting this now? Are you trying to equate anti-EU feeling with neo-Nazism, I wonder?
