Four and a half minutes in this is the most comprehensive video about climate change I've ever seen in my life. And it is from an oil company. Nearly 30 years ago.

I just posted this in a political forum and there's still people arguing about it. lol. I think because there’s a celebrity of individuals who want to present instead of the voiceover which allows the viewer to focus on what is presented not who is presenting. 😕

It's a shame not so many people have seen this. There were some comments about how man will adapt to climate change. That might be true, but it might not. The organism at the top of the food chain generally dies out during a mass extinction; thus, history is not in our favor as a species. Even if humans do not go extinct, the prospect of Billions of people dying as a result of changing the climate is a horror show. Unfortunately, the die off will begin within 100 years. Slow in terms of our lifetimes, but a blink of an eye in terms of the age of our planet.

How can anyone give this a thumbs down. It shows the climate change deniers lack of honesty that even a film from one of the big oil and gas multinationals can be ignored and lets face it with a mentality like that they need a brain transplant.

Similarly, climate change believers don't seem to be in big rush to abandon the lavish lifestyle made possible by the 1000 slave-equivalent units at their disposal. Crude oil has replaced all manual labour to the point that only 2% of the population in developed countries are involved in primary food production. Agriculture is now a marginal industry.

2C+ above baseline would mean America's food sources in the mid-West would be unusable. The US would have to import all its food. That's not such a great bargaining position to be in.

ouch! What boggles my mind is that the dieselgate settlement started the very EV charging infrastructure that is bringing EV's to the mainstream (other than Tesla)

This actually makes perfect sense. This is basically an add for renewable energy... Now, you can say it kind of backfired on them but they like everyone else is shortsighted of the future.

The problem is renewable energy isn’t yet capable of supporting civilization if it was then existing energy companies would’ve already done it

@@truthvigilante2180 indeed, renewable energy represents a tiny percentage of the energy mix, so even if it quadrupled, which would be very expensive, it would still make up a very small part. The promise of switching to a green economy is one that can't be filled without enormous sacrifices.

Why would Shell commission the creating of this? Was there an executive team that ordered this who had a sense of scientific rigour and social responsibility which was then succeeded by another team who didn't? Maybe it was a rogue team within the corporation? I have a lot of trouble believing Shell would make this since it's such an enormous conflict of interest.

Ryan Lacroix Simples. They thought there was a quick buck to be made in green technologies. When it proved to be a long-term investment, they (or at leas their shareholders) lost interest.

What is now ExxonMobil did similar research in the 70s. It was only with the threat of government regulations that the oil companies went on the defensive. (old geologist)

The incriminating documentary is still here 6 years later and 32 years after it release. People really responded to the call. Just based on how they drive only 10-15 km above speed limit, it's clear they got the message... But somehow all the blame should go to oil companies for the ever increasing use of fossile fuels.

​@@theotherdayvids People almost have an eerie excitement over it as if it will be something like in a roland emmerich movie that is the focal point when in reality it will simply be a background issue partially responsible for most of the days issues. It is best to define "as we know it." This isn't something that is just gonna happen, it is something that will subtlety change over the next 100 years and i do think we will do something about it, just not until Indian immigrants are pouring into China and Europe. But yea, if by "as we know it" you mean in the same vein as the period between 1900 and 2000 sure. Maybe more maybe not.

Although it starts off well explaining the effects of manmade climate change, Shell can't help making the claim, efficiency of it's main products would be enough to mitigate AGW. Bit down on wind for instance.

Correction: consumers ignored them. Shell was just meeting demand. Humans knew about the existence of very fuel efficient cars, like the 28 hp Citroen. Today, even a motorbike used strictly for pleasure makes twice that power. Is that Shell's fault if American households keep a boat and a seadoo and a skidoo. a leafblower, a lawnmower, a snowblower, a high pressure washer, a quad, a hedge trimmer?

Sat here tonight, over 25 years on, it is painfully clear that the strategists who created our near term extinction, still expect the same tactics/pretend to produce a different outcome, and have totally missed the point. I'm going to stop filling up at Shell stations. I don't want them to feel guilty about destroying the planet. I'll be filling up my three SUVs at Exxon stations now. I'm sure Shell will be relieved.

A brilliantly cool-headed explanation of the causes of global warming, and an invitation to take some sensible steps. In the 30 years since Shell produced this remarkable film, solar electricity has advanced so much. Hydrogen can be extracted from water by electrolysis whenever the sun shines. Non-polluting hydrogen and ammonia will be the fuels to eventually replace oil and natural gas.

I can not imagine why one of the largest offenders in the time would put out a video like this. It does not really put down oil though and that may be a clue. Another clue, "Carbon Tax" is brought up. This video is likely one of the first conditioning pieces to program us for the future, and a major part of the future, penalize the citizens with carbon tax for the crimes committed by big oil. Interesting video, glad you posted.

This movie was a waste of film played in the schools for our students. It talks about innumerable problems and we can fix it with the change of a light bulb a new computer chip ect. Where in big trouble if this is there answer!!!!!!

they made the film in 1990 and later management wanted to bury it, and make sure you would never see it. That's why you didn't see it until now. They didn't pay anybody to post it. The opposite.
