This Will Enable me to Optimize my Creative Production to Showcase Journeys of Various Forms of Life.
Michael Portillo explores New South Wales, steered by his 1913 Bradshaw’s Guide. He strikes west into the Blue Mountains and travels 570 miles into the interior of the vast Australian continent to reach the mining city of Broken Hill.
Beginning in the waterside metropolis of Sydney, the NSW capital, Michael investigates the origins of the city as a penal colony, visiting the Hyde Park Barracks, where many of the first convicts were housed. Taking his courage in both hands, Michael climbs to the top of the Coathanger to admire the view of the harbour and tours the city’s iconic Opera House.
At Bondi Beach, he joins volunteers from the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club, founded at the time of his guidebook, for rescue practice. In the Blue Mountains, Michael hears from indigenous guide Yamandirra about his people’s relationship to the land and is ceremonially 'welcomed to the country'.
At Katoomba, Michael is in for the ride of his life on the steepest railway in the world. How to follow this 125-second thrill? With an overnight journey on one of the world’s longest trains, the luxurious Indian Pacific Railway.
Arriving deep in the parched Outback at Broken Hill, Michael discovers the precious metal that put this isolated outpost on the international map, silver.

I went to Australia in 2000 and in 2015 because I have family there ... and I love that land, its people, places, etc ... Bondi Junction railway station is named after a tramway junction, where the lines to Bondi and Bronte, another beach side suburb ,separated; it isn't a railway junction, it is a terminal station. Àlso it isn't common knowledge that the trip from Sydney to Perth and return has been done twice by steam hauled trains, in 1970 the Western Endeavour, and 1988 the Bicentennial Train

Much earlier than n 1970,it was possible in 1917, changing trains I think 5 times and utilising two gauges but all steam powered. It was about 1970 that the whole line was converted to standard gauge and facilitated a single train journey by a diesel hauled train, the Indian Pacific. Worth pointing out Bondi Junction is a 3.5km journey from Bondi Beach, 13 minutes by bus. Silly fact, Bondi Junction terminates the T6 railway line, the other end of T6 optionally terminates at Cronulla Beach (30km and 1 1/2 hours), or at Kiama Beach (120km and 2 1/2 hours).

Just a point on the Opera House. It was nothing to do with the Australian Government; rather it's build was started by a NSW State Labor government in 1959. The State government changed to a Liberal (read conservative) government in 1965 and they stuffed around with Utzon, to the point where he could no longer work with them. It was completed under enormous duress by Peter Hall, an Australian architect, under enormous financial and design pressure from the Premier Robin Askin. The concert hall, even as shown in this film, was never a success acoustically, and finally it was rebuilt starting 2 years ago, completed & had the first performance on the 20th of July 2022. It is MAGNIFICENT, everything Utzon wanted, 50 years later. We had a wonderful performance of the Mahler Resurrection and an even better orchestral piece commissioned for the opening by Indigenous composer Australian William Barton; performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under Simone Young, 49 years after first opening with the Beethoven 9th, same orchestra conducted by Young's mentor Sir Charles Mackerras.

This was a great video, thanks. Did The Alice to Broken Hill overnight and returned, next night on the Indian Pacific back to Sydney. My wife and I returned from Perth on the Indian pacific in 2000, after driving across East to West. I get the feeling the filming of the Indian Pacific segment in particular might have been at a different time to other parts of this video and before the ownership change of the train? I just confirmed my suspicion as in the credits Great Southern is mentioned and that changed after this obviously.

@56:00 what’s the life span of those panels? How are old, obsolete panels disposed? Who cleans them? How often?
@vkmtahgi
@vkmtahgi 3 жыл бұрын
Solar panels don't have any moving parts so they have extremely long lifespans. solar panels last about 25-30 years. However, this doesn't mean that they stop producing electricity after 25 years - it just means that energy production has declined by a significant amount. However, what we are seeing is that efficiency is increasing so rapidly that solar panels are often economically outdated in 10 years or so. In terms of disposal - solar panels are largely made of crystalline silicon dioxide (quartz). This is harmless in landfill and can be easily recycled. Howver, since quartzis so abundant its economically not viable to recycle. Solar is the energy source of the futre - free fuel, works on all scales and low maintenance.

@heatherrowles2580
@heatherrowles2580 3 жыл бұрын
@@georgebronte840 we dont have solar panels on that scale.....ours are on our roof at home, but we find we need to clean them at least once a month, a thin film of dust is enough to cut the power production considerably. I'd imagine that in a place like Broken Hill they would need to be cleaned weekly to maintain maximum power production. Not an onerous task though, a quick rinse most of the time with a quick scrub with a broom being necessary about once every 3 months.

I know you wrote this 3 years ago but I'm only seeing this train journey video for the first time and was curious to read your comment regarding Aboriginals living and respecting the land. BUT, what is not talked about is how the Aboriginal actually destroyed what they found, the amazing but slow moving mega fauna not to mention the flora which was here when they arrived ... the story of which was somehow conveniently forgotten, as it goes against the agenda and never made it into Dreamtime, I wonder why!! Because they had the knowledge of Fire they used it to entrap animals and in doing so destroyed much of the original flora. They also introduced the eucalyptus tree which was never part of this land ... big water drinker and explodes in fires. The current species of Aboriginal was not the first nor the solitary one, due to the height and strength they annihilated the smaller fuzzy haired tribes - conducting a kind of "genocide" I think is the current trend word of the day!! Not so comfortable when that shoe was worn by other feet, figuratively speaking! 🙄

If you are going to try to be "clever" at least get your words right. It in indigenous and Aboriginal. Note the capitalization of Aboriginal. It is a proper noun in this usage.

Very Anglocentric, and totally ignores the 60,000 odd years when the first people lived here before British occupation.

I mean there is a whole series of videos and when they go to the blue mountain they literally talk and learn about the first Australians, I can’t tell if you just didn’t watch the video or just missed that section... plus it’s a series about railways and I don’t remember the aboriginals buildings many of those.

@@cammysmith7562 I had given up on him well before then. But I can't accept that he learnt much about the first people from a talk in the Blue Mountains - and by the way, it's Blue Mountains not blue mountain. And no, the first people did not build railways. Why would they? They lived on the land to which they belonged, moving gradually from one place to another as they had done for millennia - summer here where there was good hunting, spring somewhere else to gather fresh young plants and so forth.

Every series of this journey brings out a great pain and disgust how the European colonial powers, especially Britishers, with their military strength invaded other civilization and annihilated them with brutal force ,treachery ,conversion in to Christianity ,eviction and you "proudly " claim the great work done . And rewrote the borders of the nations so that it helped the colonial powers but nations keep on battle among themselves even today.
