Joyama Historic Forest Hiking Course
Start: Kiso Fukushima Station
Goal: Kiso Fukushima Station
Distance: 9.5km
Time: 6 hours
Ascent: 340m, Descent: 370m (cumulative)
Starting from Kiso Fukushima Station, the tour travels down the old Nakasendo road, passes through the post town of Fukushima-juku, and heads towards the Joyama Historic Forest.
The course is a circular route that passes through a scenic spot overlooking the town of Fukushima and the ruins of Fukushima Castle, which gave rise to the name Joyama ("Castle Mountain"), before reaching Gongen Waterfall and finally returning to Kiso Fukushima Station.
It is said that long ago, local hero Kiso Yoshinaka bathed at Gongen Waterfall to pray before raising an army, and that ascetics also came to this waterfall for purification.
A stone statue of the Buddhist deity Acala (Fudo Myo-o) is enshrined near the waterfall, and it is said that you can feel a power beyond human understanding at this spiritual spot.
