For Joyce DiDonato, Schubert’s Winterreise (Winter Journey) is one of "the masterpieces: those holy relics of unparalleled genius that have changed the course of the art form entirely." Discover her retelling of the story from the perspective of the lost love, with pianist Yannick Nézet-Séguin: w.lnk.to/winterreiseLY
Composed in 1827, the year before Schubert died at the age of just 31, Winterreise is made up of 24 songs, written to texts by Wilhelm Müller. Its story, told in fragments and references rather than structured narrative, is seen through the eyes of a heartbroken young man. Disappointed in love, he makes his way through a desolate, frozen winter landscape.
Recorded: 15.XII.2019, Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, Carnegie Hall, New York City

As to recorded renditions done by women, I think Christa Ludwig's is maybe the best I have ever heard - but this is wonderful as well, perhaps equally so. I think Ms. Donato's idea was to present herself in character as the woman who was left behind by the wanderer and has found diaries, letters or the like from him. That is, , I suspect , why she chose to dress in black, indicating mourning for some reason, and also why she is reading, as she certainly doesn't need to use the score to remember the piece. At first it was a little difficult for me to adjust to that idea. But it is an original and interesting take on it, and everything she does is wonderful, including this, at least IMO.

Sorry but it doesn't make any sense to be "the woman who was left behind" because she was going to marry a rich man and wasn't interested in him. Joyce was probably wearing black because this is a very sad song cycle and the text is about death. Schubert knew he was going to die and these songs reflect his humor.

Was soll ich länger weilen, Daß man mich trieb hinaus ? Pourquoi devrais-je attendre encore Que l’on me mette dehors ?

I need to be clear that I am a a huge fan of Joyce (or used to be, it is getting less and less now, but I own and frequently listen to many of her earlier records). But this is a complete no-go. German is hard, but other foreign speakers managed to get it much much more correct for this cycle and what bothers me most: everything sounds the same. Some timid, vibratoed, whispering all the time, she doesn't get into this role or mindset. They butcherd it.
