Back in the 80s my mum really liked this song. She was not into my music at all generally but she really enjoyed this. I lost her by suicide just over 20 years ago after she had suffered many years of mental health issues. I always think of her when I hear this and have always wondered if she felt connected to the song or some empathy for the singer. I truly feel for all the tormented souls that suffer mental illness and hope that they find happiness.

If any musician deserves a place in heaven, it was ian curtis. He suffered terribly with epilepsy, and was tormented by the heavy, early medicine they used to try treating this horrible condition, and to ian, suicide was eventually preferable to continuing to suffer. When routine bites hard, And ambitions are low, And resentment rides high, But emotions won't grow, And we're changing our ways, Taking different roads. Then love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side. Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry. Yet there's still this appeal That we've kept through our lives. But love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. You cry out in your sleep, All my failings exposed. And there's a taste in my mouth, As desperation takes hold. Just that something so good Just can't function no more. But love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. This song and video captured Joy Division's outward musical ethos perfectly. Four young men, dressed in formal wear in an empty room nearly devoid of color. Peter Hook seeming angry while playing an incredible riff. Bernard struggling to play the ethereal perfectly. Steven hammering a tight, flawless driving beat. And Ian, with an exhausted, but soulful delivery of a beautiful melancholy summary of love that is nearly dead. Aurally captured and enhanced with the musical production talents of Martin Hannet. This is how Joy Division will be remembered.

One of the most underrated bands ever. People completely underestimate how much of an influence Joy Division had on music (in all aspects) at the time, even though their tenure was a short one. For example U2 themselves owe Joy Division a lot for their sound. Nevermind other artists and bands of the era.
@paulph120023 жыл бұрын
Joy Division are anything but underrated, they are one of the most iconic influential post punk bands ever. if you think they are in any way underrated then you know nothing about music!
@abcun173 жыл бұрын
@@paulph12002 I meant relatively to their outsized influence they are fairly underrated as most people aren't aware of them. And you could have just replied without being a dickhead. If your knowledge of music is made up of being an arrogant ass, then you may want to reassess that "knowledge".
@preving3 жыл бұрын
If you listen to the Boy album by U2, you can definitely hear elements of Joy Division especially on the song, Twilight.
@bobdanger-palmer44303 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. I hear Joy division in so many of my favourite bands. The impact they had on music is absolutely massive. One of the things that blows my fucking mind with this band is the maturity they had at such a young age. Atmosphere is one of my favourite songs and it sounds like it came from a mind that had been writing songs for decades. It's incredibly elegant and heartfealt songwriting and the world will never be ready to tire of them I think %

Honestly the best version of the song, the guitar sounds so bittersweet, there's acoustic and a muted electric, Ian's voice sounds so crisp and upfront. I don't see much conversion about it online wish I did and wish this was on spotify or able to listen to it elsewhere

My best friend thought it was a really bad idea to put this song on the mixed tape that played during my wedding ceremony. divorced now, my former wife remains a good friend. Every year for laughs I send her this song and it never fails to get a positive response. That's nice. Sometimes the little things make all the bad things of the past much easier to handle. Great music seems to do that. This song never fails to make us both realize that failing in a relationship isn't the worst thing that can happen. really bad taste in music is by far the worst thing that can happen. for me the sweet irony of this song will always be a way to connect with a good friend, whom I still love.
