That’s me for sure. No shame in it. 38 years old and the part of me that feels this is forever scared. My father was a city over too. Didn’t want anything to do with me. Never sent a birthday card or anything. Now I win father of the year awards in my house. He’s “the man that I will never become.” Richy is right. You are not alone. Take the trauma you faced and use it as fuel to be a better father/husband/person. 💯

Facts I relate more to joyner lucas when than any rapper that tells story my dad was in my life for 3 years thanks when I was born til I was 3 and he abused me and my mom than my mom left him and moved on I saw him in 2004 but he was in the hospital for lung cancer he asked for my forgiveness for the pain he caused any I have PTSD cause of him but I was 14 And it was 12 years later I told him I hate him and I wish he would die and he died the next day so as a teen u delt with that and that the reason my mom and me don't really have a relationship and I'm 30 I don't have any kids not and acl relationship because I'm not sure i can be a great father or boyfriend to a beautiful queen so I just try to be a great uncle to my sister kids but I relate to joyner lucas and I hate that he doesn't get the recognition that he deserves but sadly that's how the music goes industry is but I pray joyner just keeps it up because he's music helps a lot of people through their darkness .

My dad died 2 year ago in my arms, I'm 17, since that day I felt like I lost a piece of me, he was my pops, my best friend, everything, we were literally inseparable. Now everywhere I go, I see his after-images beside me, reminiscing of the time we were together, i was hoping to grant him everything he ever wished for when I grew up, but praying for him is all I can do now. Sorry if this is too long, but I just want to tell you one thing, having your parents is a huge favor, please treat them well, be patient when they ask you something, fulfill all their wishes like this is the last time they'll ever be by your side, or you will regret it, that day when remorse will serve nothing. Have a good day 🙏

Ive never been close to my dad and him and my mom had issues so I moved out and in with my moms parents. My parents had me and my twin at 19/20 and my younger brother 2 years later. After growing up poor but them making shit work all you want to give back for what they gave up to give you everything. I kinda saw that ending as a representation of how his relationship with his father has ended. His longing for his relationship with his father was that river. He kept trying to cross it, to get back to how it was when he was little. To find that grounding they needed. But his father never met him halfway, never was there for him. So in the end, that part of him died trying. That scene in the beginning, where they resuscitate him and he’s all alone, that’s when he finally realized he had to rely on himself. And the set the rest- working for money, buying his own shoes, etc. It’s honestly a masterpiece of a video. That last scene where he drowns gave me chills.

My story: I’ve honestly never even met my dad and have no idea who he even is. My mom passed away when i was 3 in 2007 and i’ve lived with my grandparents all my life. My grandad was the only dad i’ve ever had and he also passed away but this year (2020) on my birthday. I wish this wasn’t true and that i was making it up but it’s reality. Glad to share it and it warms my heart to see everyone being so supportive of each other. ❤️

I am a white boy from Holland who has a good life and a lot of love from my mom and dad. They divorced when I was 3 and they both got new partners. My dad got a new wife, but I couldn't get along with her. She physically abused me a couple times when I was younger. When I got older, it stopped, but I was never comfortable there. So I tried to tell my dad years later, but he didn't believed me. That was the moment I left him to live with my mom. So again, I have a great life and I should not complain about anything, but I still got really depressed when I was younger and leaving your dad after 18 years after a fight is really heartbreaking. I still miss him and I'm having a hard time living without him. It's almost a year ago that I left him, but it's still hard because I love him, abviously. I really hope me and him get back together.

A father figure can sometimes be a friend too. I was adopted so I never had a dad. I only have a mom and no matter what I can never picture my real family as a family. So a senior I met in freshman year ended up being such a good role model for me, he was like a father figure to me. And when I say he was the best and most mature male friend I ever had, I mean he was the best and most mature male friend I ever had. We met on the bus the first day in the morning and started talking on the second day in the afternoon. Keep in mind I was new to the town, and the district so I knew absolutely NOBODY. And he was the only one I had at that time. He showed me to some of his friends and sisters, he made promises like, “I’m never going to turn on you I promise” or said stuff like, “You gotta try right? You wanna be famous you gotta work hard at it." he FaceTimed me and cheered me up when I felt suicidal on my way to the hospital, and he even brought his sisters to come to my school play. Little did I know, he didn’t care about me at all. He was like that to everyone when I had no idea. I was the least important to him. When he got clout on Instagram he started to ghost me. He then threw me away when quarantine started in March. He blocked me on everything and it took 9 months to get over him. During those months I was having my friends text him only so I could say everything I ever wanted to him from the start. I eventually did and now I’m over him. I’m so glad I was able to move on. But Yusuf comes back in my head every now and then.

This shit hit home man. Had tears rolling down my face the first time I heard this track. My dad was in and out of my life and we never really bonded. I didn’t even meet him until I was 7. I’m 19 now and I just cut him out of my life last year. I couldn’t take it no more. The empty “I love u”s, the shallow gifts, maybe seeing him once or twice a year...I was just fucking over it. When I cut ties with him I told him how much he hurt me and my mom but I thanked him for making me stronger. Like Joyner said...now I know the man I’ll never become. Bless y’all who took the time to read this. Joyner/Shaq=🐐🐐🐐

Great review. This song is also about my life. I'm 51 years old and I can't remember 1 single thing my old man ever bought me. He passed away in 97 but I remember asking him for a skateboard back in 81 and he told nope skateboards are dangerous. 30 years later I bought that same skateboard as a dad with my own kids and I keep it in my room, too old to ride it but to prove that it wasn't hard for him to do he just didn't care about me as his son or his family at all. He was the same age as I am right now as I write this comment when he died alone in his bathroom with no one to help him after having a heart attack. They found him dead days later with the water still running in the bathroom kinda like the river scene in the video with Joyner as a kid.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in the same city as Joyner. My best friend and I were messing with records, samplers, and the MPC in 1995-1996. Joyner's Dad, Gary, was a known producer in Worcester, MA. He put together a mix tape in the late 90's and my best friend's beat was chosen; Gary altered that shit to hell. It went from a rugged, Black Moon-esque beat, into an early R Kelly track. Fuck Gary Lucas.

Shaq I love how real you are bro. This one hit hard for me, probably not as hard as some others, because I had my dad present until I was 17, then he made some decisions that changed my plans and I had to move from what I know to take care of my mom and sister and be the man of the house and to make sure that they were taken care of. It made me a better man. I feel for anyone that didn’t have their father and needed him growing up. Stay strong. Shaq I love what you do my dude. You are doing great things! #NLG

I feel like this video represents so much of the upbringing of so many people. My dad wasn't around for the beginning on my life. He's unstable, yet tried to regain the relationship which was never an uphill battle but a battle that was never fought in terms of building a relationship. I had a stepdad that followed but, he was the one my mother cheated on my dad with and left him for. I remember nights when I felt unsecure and stayed up late in order to watch over the house for my younger sister while she slept. I remember being the one to comfort her when she couldn't sleep and got us food when she was hungry. I took the role of the parents to help raise her and get her through school and deal with any bullies along the way. When college came around I worked to help pay for her college. Now I am 30 with a wife and 3 kids. 1 which is not my own but the father left the picture when he was 3 and I entered the picture when he was 4. Now the young man is 11 and I couldn't be more proud to call him my son. I feel like this song would really get to him if he heard it. Which reminds me to not just replace the father that left him. But to be a father figure he can look up to as a role model so he can do the same for his children. With covid I lost my well paying job after buying my family our first house. I am under the most stress I've felt regarding finances. With three kids and a wife depending on me to make ends meet I feel like the world is weighing on my shoulders. My ideal Christmas is simply to have them not worry about anything but enjoying the holidays. On the 15th I find out if I get to keep my current job which is subject to the series 7 exam and the series 63 exam. I have been studying my ass off but I feel like there is always something more I can do. This is just a rant of one persons perspective on what this song ignites in me. Go above and beyond because nothing is more important than being the father figure your children deserve. If we want respectful, responsible adults in the future that starts with us today. I hope everyone enjoys their holidays! And that anyone going through hardship finds the light at the end of the tunnel because we all deserve it! Lets learn from the past and create a better future together and that starts at the homes of every single one of us. We can only affect what we have control over. Lets show the world that with or without a proper upbringing we can learn what it means to be the man of the house on a financial, emotional, and the glue that keeps it all together.

Now I’m trying to do better in life but starting my writing career if I really think about it he was filled with empty promises it’s like he bled the lies. Sorry for the rant it’s more on my mind but imma just leave it at that

I remember my dad was an alcoholic, drunk and had a fake gun he would point with, i would run to my room, scared to death of what he'd do. Was a kid and wanted to have fun but he had the drink and have his fun. Grew up scared, he got sober. Being sober doesnt mean he was actually there. I grew up with mental issues, no tissues, went go school and got plenty whoopins i went through. Longer than i thought, the beatings lasted. Bruises still there from the last one

Well I came from a small town in Georgia. A town of about 10000 people. My dad lived in the same city as me for a few years. I can count on both hands how many times I seen my father growing up. I never understood why he didn't want to see me or pay child support to help me. It's sad when you finally get to know your father for about seven years on Facebook before he passes away. I spread my dad's ashes March 7th 2019. I didn't know him, but he was my father so I loved him. R.I.P dad. Because of him I made a vow to my three kids that I would never do the same. Unfortunately I just went through a divorce and my two youngest I pay my child support every paycheck and get them every weekend. I now have custody of my oldest son. I don't understand how any father could do that to their kids.

SORRY FOR THE NOVEL: Yo NLS i been watching you for a minute. this song really hit me hard. my dad cheated and left my mom when i was 5, after that it was always back and forth of seeing him and not seeing him. He was a raging alcoholic and was always abusive mentally and physically growing up. When i was about 8 or 9 he completely dropped out of my life until i was 18 and had joined the US Marines. We reconnected and had been on talking terms for years and when i finally thought i was going to have a father in my life he got super upset that i had said i didnt like his latest wife and started slingin names and shit at me and when i told him that if he felt that me saying what i said was so bad that he wanted to cut ties with his own blood for some new lady in his life then so be it, i didnt need him for 10 years growing up, i didnt need him now. His response was to tell me i was adopted and that he never really gave a shit about me. The funny thing is that the adopted part isnt even true, he just said it to be hurtful. Sometimes i feel sorry for myself and wonder what it would have been like to actually have a father figure in my life. Other times i feel like crying about it. Usually i just look at it all as a lesson to not need anybody else in my life and how i will never be to my own step son. Keep on your shit though homie, love the vids, love the NLS fam.

My dude, I hit the thumbs up before you even started the video. My dad walked when I was 5, but he eventually came back and still have my dad today, but at 38, I don't have any kids of my own. At this age though, you meet a lot of single moms out there, obviously. The last girl I dated, who turned out to just be a complete piece of shit, had a 4yo daughter and 6yo son whom I grew pretty attached to in two years. I can never understand how a dad couldn't want or love his children. I fucking miss those kids, and their mom sure as shit isn't going to teach either one of them the right direction to go in. I hope the short time we had together teaches them what a good man is supposed to be like. You a good dude, Shaq.

I know this video is over a year old but I loved this song. Joyner is from the same place I’m from and I’ve been a fan a lil before he started dropping singles for ADHD. I can relate to this song in a different way though. My dad was in my life the whole time but my mom abandoned me when I was 11. We’ve had on and off relationships where we wouldn’t speak for years at a time until I was about 20. Unfortunately we don’t talk at all anymore. I haven’t spoken to here in 5 years and she turned that whole side of the family against me. A whole pandemic happened and I haven’t heard a word from a soul and tbh I couldn’t even tell you who’s still alive or not. It’s honestly so important to have BOTH parents in your life. Some people may think that as long as they have one they’ll be fine but it’s so hard when one is absent. There are so many lessons I missed out on and learned late due to her being absent
