Harmonica Miscellanea is a weekly video series covering various subjects related (or tangentially related) to harmonicas, playing harmonica, harmonica players, harmonica news and whatever else I fancy talking about.
In this video I talk about the benefits of ditching (or at least, providing an option of playing without) a traditional amplifier, but still achieving the gritty Chicago Blues tone we all love. I then quickly demonstrate the Joyo American Sound pedal.

Hi Kev, a lot of guitarist are raving about this pedal as your probably are aware. I was thinking of getting a harp attack to improve my tone but then saw this and was amazed how close it was to the harp attack. But not exactly the same. But £30 against £179 is a no brainer really. I've made up me mind to get one. Keep up the good work Kev 👏

Hi Michael. I use it for guitar as well! It's an astonishingly useful thing. It's definitely not quite as good as the Harp Attack (I have one of those for sale by the way) but, like you say, the HA a damn sight pricier. Also, it runs at 18volts, so needs a different adaptor than most other pedals. I've decided that close enough is good enough for me!

I am excited I just received mine. I have a honey tone and an amp box ac30 headphone amp.sadly the boya lavalier microphone will not work. Such a tight budget now looking at a cheap Xlr karaoke mic to start. I’ve only Been playing for a week so of if I can make that work I can save for a better microphone. Any Opinions?

Hi Kev, my sound is nothing like yours, v/good but not great. I have the HB verso but I'm going through the cheap n cheerful superlux D112 mic. I'm guessing it's the lack of quality the more expensive bullet mics. Just wondering what you think, thank you for your great videos, Glenn

Hi Glenn. For what you pay I quite like the superlux and probably prefer it to the current Shure Green Bullet. You should be able to get a decent sound out of it.

Oh yeah, I have a bullitini mic, so could I plug in straight from the joyo straight in the desk at a pub jam night, or would I get feedback? Cheers in advance .

Hi Michael, I'm not a worker, just a hobbyist. I bought the Little Red Di box. Mic into Di. Into Joyo into Pa and you get no feedback. Hope this helps

You'd probably want to have it very low in the monitor (if there is one) to avoid feedback. But absolutely, straight into the mixer (or DI then mixer). I don't often play with a loud band though (mainly duo and small ensemble), so not much experience to draw from.
